Exclamation Fighter Jets buzz Chandler!

Did anybody else see the Fighter jets (I'm guessing the were F-16's) circle Stellar Air Park (a tiny little air port in Chandler at Chandler and Rural road)? Anybody know why?

OK, I found out.

Some poor pilot in a private plane put the wrong code into some peice of equipment and scrambled the fighters. We did see a small plane landing very quickly and in an unusual direction while the fighters were circling tightly. I'll bet that pilot was sweating bullets. "No, no, no... don't shoot! I was born and raised in Arizona. I just dialed the wrong number."

Bad day at the yoke for that guy, huh?

At least we know the homeland security is working.

I dont own a suby, but I do own two of the planes based at Angel Air... the same place that the pilot put the wrong transponder code into a Cessna, causing the F-16s to be scrambled.

Seems that one of the student pilots was out on a solo flight and decided to punch in the international code for 'hijacking' into the transponder (a device that reports altitude and general location to the national radar system). This drew MAJOR attention from a lot of people!

I don't have the whole story yet, but I plan on callin Angel Air tomorrow to check it out. Btw, the orange plane in the TV new report was one of mine.

Cool

FlyinTurbo,

Cool, do post any interesting info you discover. I missed the TV coverage, but the 12News web site said that the pilot was "visibly shaken". I'd bet he had to go home and change his shorts after having 2 F16's lock on him and circle.

I was in a 4th story building just West of the airport and saw the whole thing. Our whole foor went to the window when the F16's flew low overhead and rattled the whole office. I'm sure glad they weren't after me. Could you imagine flying along minding your own business in your single engine prop plane when 2 F16's blow by and demand that you land IMMEDIATELY! I've never seen anybody put a plane down so fast. I thought he landed in a field. He definately didn't take the normal circle and approach frm the North path.

Scary stuff.

I called down to Angel today and it seems a newbie (recently soloed student) took off with the transponder in the 'hijack' position! Guess the feds were pretty lenient with the guy because he only had a few hrs under his belt and he did get the plane on the ground asap! I am just wondering about the instructor now... (instructors are held responsible for things like this!). I do know that it wasn't one of my planes that the fella was flyin **whew**

I can vouch for that. I thought he put it down in a parking lot.

Oh, I'm sure there'd have been a few smoldering pieces left.

Wink

About 1 mile West on the North side of the road. If I told you the name you'd recognize it.
