it would have been nice if europe was gonna spend some of that military refresh money in our country, but we've proven unreliable as an ally...despicable

Thumbs up drone brain mothership thing

Been following this dude for a while and he has an easy delivery style. No real groundbreaking news but a light summary.

I got hooked on Mover and Gonky with their series for Top Gun Maverick. Listening to fighter pilots discuss a fighter movie.

Airwolf, marginally better than MacGuyver.

I mean... helicopters don't break the sound barrier. Really getting selective on their suspension of disbelief. The only thing the guy got correct is that Airwolf is the greatest show ever made next to Firefly.

Also discovered them because of TGMaverick

So you are saying a highly experienced fighter pilot who flew T38's is incorrect about the T38 not having VTOL? That it really has 50 cals on the wings?

Everybody knows that T-38B's came with the Fortune Teller weapons system. Ask Ken.

Match absurdity with absurdity. I'll take my arm chair expert knowledge over this so-called pilot who probably still thinks "turbo boost" makes his Ford Escape jump over speed bumps only raising the wrong questions about what's legit in Knight Rider and argue until you have nothing left to give that no part of Knight Rider was ever sped up.

Second US Navy jet is lost at sea from Truman aircraft carrier

Another F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier has been lost in the Red Sea, the second jet lost from the carrier in just over a week, five people familiar with the matter told CNN.

It is not entirely clear what happened yet, as the investigation is ongoing, but two of the people said there was some kind of arrestment failure as the jet was trying to land on the carrier and the pilot and weapons systems officer had to eject. They were recovered by a rescue helicopter and are both alive, but they suffered minor injuries, one of the people said.

The jet crashed into the sea and has not been recovered, two of the people familiar with the incident said.

Separately, the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group "took a shot" at the Truman on Tuesday, four of the people said, despite President Donald Trump announcing an apparent ceasefire with the group hours earlier. It is not clear whether the two incidents are related.

The Office of the Secretary of Defense referred all questions about the incidents to the Navy and US Central Command. CNN has reached out to the Navy and CENTCOM for comment.

The loss of the fighter jet comes one week after another F/A-18 jet fell overboard the Truman. That time, initial reports indicated that the Truman made a hard turn to evade Houthi fire, which contributed to the fighter jet falling overboard.

An individual F/A-18 fighter jet costs more than $60 million, according to the Navy.

US Naval assets in the Red Sea have repeatedly come under Houthi fire since the Houthis began their attacks against Red Sea shipping in November 2023. In early 2024, a US destroyer in the Red Sea had to use its Phalanx Close-In Weapon System, its last line of defense to missile attacks, when a Houthi-fired cruise missile got as near as a mile away - and therefore seconds from impact.

The Truman aircraft carrier in particular, though, has been plagued with problems as part of its Red Sea deployment. In December, another F/A-18 fighter jet was operating from the Truman when it was "mistakenly fired" upon by the USS Gettysburg and crashed into the Red Sea. Both aviators ejected safely at the time.

Then, in February, the Truman was involved in a collision with a merchant ship near Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea. Following the incident, the commander of the Truman at the time, Captain Dave Snowden, was relieved of duty. Captain Christopher Hill took command of the carrier shortly thereafter.

This story has been updated with additional details.

Pretty wild that they have catastrophic failures in so many different departments. Something seriously wrong with that crew/leadership.

The Truman is essentially in a wartime environment with the Houthis lobbing everything but the kitchen sink at the Red Sea. More things can happen under that added stress vs a peaceful cruise - never served so this coming from a doughy civilian. I'd give them a wide berth criticism wise.

Maybe they were rushed out with no predeployment workups or turnover. Falls in same category. But some things should be routine. This is the time the job feels like it means something, would think they would be more on the ball. Some crews and ships are just problems and its takes years and rotations to get it sorted out.

maybe some sacrifices are required to save a $4B+ ship and thousands of people. maybe things break in combat

@Ken: it boggles my mind that you still post uninformed conjecture when there is a no $hit 18 driver here that can provide actual insight

A VH-22 Osprey with the tailnumber ELVIS11 flew over a moment ago.

I didn't get outside to see it, but you could clearly hear something weird went over.

Perhaps they figure that Hegseth will be ok with them since is saves them the trouble of loosing the plane plus a pilot if SecDef keeps texting crap over unsecure channels.

Ship lists over and tug and airplane slide.

There’s nothing stopping anything when the elevator is up (which is 99% of the time). Walking around the hangar deck in month 5+ of cruise it’s covered in oil, fuel, and hydraulic fluid and slicker than ****. Hell, we had a Super fall of its jacks on my cruise.

And no Ken, the Truman did not go on deployment without workups, they did a full set. Honestly this surprises me less than the jet that went over the side from a storm. We have two different tie-down conditions, normal and foul weather. If the jet had the appropriate about of tie-down chains for foul weather (I think it’s 14 but can’t quite remember) and still went over, yeah **** happens.

No, it was being towed in the hangar deck and the tug and jet went over the side

This is saying it was a "failure on landing" and the crew ejected.

2 different incidents on the same ship within a few weeks of eachother.

The latest one is an arresting system failure. Dunno if it was the wires or the hook. I thought yall went full throttle on landings just in case this happens.

Then there's the one shot right after launch by the Gettysburg.

Then there's the mechant ship collision. CO got fired there.

Wonder what we don't get to hear about.

Just seems like there's some **** happening on that ship.
