MCAS Yuma (and I'm assuming Beaufort) have special concrete pads now as well because the normal concrete couldn't handle it.

Yeah, there are about four or five new pads at Beaufort.

It's a neat looking maneuver. I can't help but wonder how helpful it would be.

Not very.

The SU57 has horizontal thrust vectoring which is what induces the yaw to enter that flat spin. We didn't bother with it on the F22 because vertical thrust vectoring and the ability to control pitch is much more useful in combat than additional yaw which mainly effects heading.

The F14 thing in Top Gun was an actual problem with the real airplane because of the design of engine intakes. Excess yaw on the nose allowed the airplane to compressor stall its own engine by disrupting the airflow, which if it happens in a low energy state and the pilot panicks and punches the other engine, you can get into an unrecoverable spin ala Kara Hultgren.

Nice maneuver......Stealth fighters would just blow it out of the sky without ever being seen.

Or a SAM. Or an Apache. Isn't it pretty much just a spinning duck at that point?

If you are being pursued at close range, if you can force your opponent to overshoot you in a post-stall maneuver, you can quickly put your opponent back on your front quarter and shoot.

Without a post-stall ability to point the nose where you want, all you can do is lower the nose and try to regain some airspeed so you can begin aerodynamic maneuvering again...hopefully before your opponent circles back around (or does his own post-stall pedal turn).

But as others have mentioned, that might not be the best thing to do. Better to keep your speed up and make slashing attacks on the guy that just gave up all his speed.

I’ve been racking my brain and I can’t see how that maneuver is useful in a one-circle dogfight.

It’s not useful in a flats type engagement. Maybe in a one-circle spiral to the deck? But even that is usually a two-circle type of flow.

I deployed with Lt.Col Herrmann in 06/07, 99% of what we did was refuel F-18s and AV-8s over Iraq.

**** reason to die.

Interesting that the back seater survived but the pilot didn't.

Which aircraft were the other five fatalities in? Did he actually take out the tanker when he hit it?

Yes, article mentions in several places that all crew from tanker were killed when it crashed as a result of the collision.

Yeah, he took out the KC-130J.

We deployed to Iwakuni and flew with 242 a lot. Even back then, they didn’t quite have their stuff together.

Something did a couple laps west of Dallas GA this afternoon. It stayed behind the treeline sadly.

He positioned himself off the left wing after refueling. He lost SA at some point and flew over the top of the tanker and presumably took out a piece of the tail.

Default Fighter Jets

The article said he impacted near the aft rear jump door.

I’m trying to recall what we briefed for tanking off a 130 with two drogues out. I think we still joined on the left and -1 would cross under and plug starboard drogue and wing would use the port drogue.

We always cleared off to the right and I think -2 would cross under to the right and take up loose right echelon then both fighters would clear to the right.

It’s be 6+ years since I’ve tanked off a 130.

I really wish I hadn't read any farther.

It sounds like the collision might have happened while the F-18 crew was hotdogging for the KC130 crew. Both guys in the F-18 ejected. The backseater was recovered, but the pilot was not. Using info from his smart watch, they determined he was alive on the ocean surface for nine hours after the accident.

Thumper, don't they have some sort of beacon that's activated when they eject so they can be found?

Sad read indeed, such a shame for something that could have been avoided.

I prefer when you guys post the sexy pictures.

Yes. We do. It’s in the seat pan which means it’s underwater unless you are able to get into your raft and pull the beacon into the raft with you.

The pilot died of exposure. I flew in that airspace a bunch and we realized if we ejected we would be in the water for a while. However, we do try to avoid wearing a dry suit unless NATOPS makes it mandatory (water <50F or windchill <32, water temp 50-60 is up to CO’s discretion).

Yeah, I have to imagine a dry suit is pretty uncomfortable.
