Default Nintendo

Is anyone else following this? I have to say that I'm pretty excited for a new Nintendo console with less *waggle* and games that don't look like a blurry mess on a native HD display.

From 1up:

Quote:
It's no surprise that people are insanely excited about Nintendo's Wii successor --so far sources have indicated that the system will be more powerful than the Xbox 360 and PS3 (finally, Nintendo games in glorious HD!), and it will have a brand new control mechanism in the form of a touch-screen controller with a camera, eight buttons and two analog sticks. The system will also be backward compatible with Wii games --dare I speculate (or at least dream) that it will also up-res them to full HD? You know, like the Wii emulator for PC that made such games as Super Mario Galaxy look mindblowingly awesome?

But anyway, while I'm with everyone in being excited about a new HD Nintendo console that has some nifty new controller device, there's actually another reason that I'm looking forward to this new system, one that hasn't really been discussed yet: online.
There's a bunch of tech specs rumors flying around, like controllers with built in screens, and hardware that bests the current gen, as well as some supposed leaked images of development console. As its apparently been confirmed by Nintendo to be on the way, all we have to do is sit back and wait for the hypemachine to start up.

Too little too late, Nintendo, or too soon to tell? I have to admit, I do loves me some first party Nintendo games.

I'll buy it for a Zelda game then sell it, just like I did with the Wii.

I fear Nintendo's shoehorning itself into the family/kids game segment may hurt their chances of making waves with an HD console.

The other day my girlfriend and I were fake-bickering back and forth and we kept shouting over eachother. At one point I just screamed "WAGGLE TO PET TIGER!" at the top of my lungs.

I won.

That may be true, but as a 37 year old gamer with no kids, I still really enjoy a lot of their family friendly fare.

I know that's not a popular opinion, though.

Oh I do too - I just think it may limit them from being the "next big thing" etc etc.

Super Mario Galaxy was really neat.

"More powerful than Xbox 360 and PS3" means it will be outdated as soon as their successors hit the market.

Otherwise, it sounds exactly like a Dreamcast.

The new nintendo console will be as powerful or slightly more powerful than 360 and ps3. Unfortunately, it will not have a hard drive (design choice, and a bad one). Also, the next gen playstation and xbox will be 1-3 years off at the time of release.

This poses a bit of a problem for nintendo. They're basically releasing a "1/2 gen" console that will have a very limited window to thrive before newer, more powerful units are released. I am reminded of the Dreamcast, which was followed by the ps2 and original xbox, and effectively buried. Of course, Sega ****ed up a whole lot more with my beloved DC than just the release date... and nintendo has their famous franchise games to carry them.

I see this becoming a big hit, just like the Wii was, but I don't think that means they will become a hardcore gaming console. Like the Wii, it will sell a billion copies, but most of the games will be family oriented (and first party)...and they will stay at their original retail price forever. The PS4 and Xbox 720 will still do just fine. Also, I'm not sure how the controller will be cheap at all if it is really a 6 inch touch screen.

Wii still gets time at our house. I'm not a big gamer; since the new Super Mario and DK came out, the 360 has just been used to Netflix.

Can we unlock and root the controller pads? A touch screen with a camera, 8 buttons and 2 sticks sounds like someone just mashed everything popular together. Not sure if want.

PS3 came out in 2006 and due to the economic slowdown, it's peak is coming now. Sony still thinks it can stretch PS3 out for 10 years; realistically any official announcement of a PS3 successor is won't come out until after Project Cafe hits the market to kill/slow Nintendo's momentum into next year's Christmas shopping season. XBox360 has already peaked with the last Halo game on this generation, already milked Forza for what it's worth. It'll probably sell decently enough with the newest CoD game coming out this holiday season.

For whatever reason, Nintendo doesn't really care if they come up "third" in the console war against Sony and Microsoft. Even if they come up #3 against PS4 and Xbox 720, they will have made plenty of profits with their low cost console (they only need to produce something marginally superior to the PS3 which can't be nearly as costly as Sony's originally undertaking of bring the PS3 to market in 2006) and have a decent head start by getting their new console to the market first.

It wasn't the economic slowdown that hurt the PS3, its the fact it cost $600 and didn't have the exclusives they promised when it came out. Add that when they finally did start lowering the price they removed features which they had previously said were required in this generation, and you get an indication why the PS3 didn't sell well for a few years. And the 360 hasn't peaked, its selling better than it has in previous years.

I don't think hardware specs will really affect it.

The Wii is basically dreamcast hardware right now and is holding it's own just fine against 360 and PS3 in sales.

Wat?

Wii is still number one in sales over Xbox 360 and PS3. Beyond that, it actually makes Nintendo a profit. So, how do you figure they come up third in the console war?

Sales. The 360 and I believe the PS3 make a profit on console sales. The problem with the Wii is that a family audience is unlikely to buy many games, which is where they make most of their profits. The Wii has the lowest purchase rate for games, and this is why Nintendo lost a lot of money last quarter.

Sony's original plan for the PS3 was a 10-year lifespan. Current rumor mill is saying they are gearing up for a 2013-2014 launch.

While "first to market" is generally a good thing, this is not necessarily the case with technology (especially with how quickly hardware advances). Hey, I love Nintendo. IMO, they rolled the dice with the low-powered, gimmicky (to some) Wii and made out for it. I wish them all the luck in the world. They certainly don't need it with franchises like Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. I just happen to think their timing on this one is poor.
