I finally have my PC up and running Question though, in MSI afterburner is there a way to fine tune the settings instead of the slider option. When I try to move it up a little it'll jump by 15-20 when I only want to go up in single increments. I still got my MSI 980ti 6g OC'ed at ~1480Mhz, tested with Kombuster, Firemark 3d and Unigine Valley, GPU temp never went above 75C with fan in auto. Will test for a longer time today though to see how stable it is.

Also got my QNIX to OC at 98hz, was hoping for more but I get all sorts of weird colors when I go higher.

You can double click the number on the right and input your own.

Future build questions:

It was between the 4790k and 5820k for a video editing computer. The 5820k had the two extra cores, but in premier pro benchmarks, it was barely faster, not worth the extra cost (cpu, x99 mobos, and dd4)

Skylake 6700k is coming out soon, which will replace the 4790k. I will wait to see what happens with that, but the motherboards for the 6700k will come at a premium for a while, and they will probably be running DDR4.

So the prices for a 6700k build might be close to the 5820k build.

Does anybody know what are the changes to skylake and associated components beyond the slight performance increase?

Edit: I forgot, its the 6700S coming out soon, the locked version. I don't plan on overclocking, but that does limit future options.

Here are the old fans where you can actually hear some bearing noise:

Also, you can see I do actually have a slot open next to that noisy 680, so maybe I will put a cooler on it...
I have a Corsair H70 sitting in the closet... I could pair that with the NZXT bit that you linked me I think... gotta make sure it'll all bolt up...

You can just type in the setting you want where it shows the number next to the slider.

Cannot decide:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127832

or

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125684

Both pretty much the same price. I like that the Gigabyte has more options for connections to monitors, but the card appears to be a lot bigger(pictures may be deceiving). I'm unsure if it'll fit in my case.

You really can't go wrong with either card. I like MSI stuff. Wasn't 042 selling his 970?

Newegg says that the MSI card is 10.98" and the Gigabyte is 12.28" long.

THIS would probably be my choice. I like EVGA. I don't think you could go wrong with either of those you listed, though.

Other than its manufacturer...why would you pick that vs the ones I linked? Same price so I'm interested....

I'll have to open my case up and measure and see what would fit. I'm almost certain the MSI card would fit without issue. The Gigabyte card at a tad over a foot long...we might have an issue.

SPEED!

Plus, I am an unabashed EVGA fanboi.

Seriously, the 970 is a great chip, and any choice boils down to cooling, packaging (card form factor), and customer service. The ACX 2.0x cooling is really, really good. Quiet, efficient, and it really cools well.

EVGA 1190mhz 10.1" long
Gig 1178mhz 12.28" long
MSI 1140mhz 10.98" long

And EVGA customer service is hands-down superior to all others. I know, firsthand. I had a fan die on an MSI card, and sent it into MSI. 3 weeks later, I get the same card back with the same fans (at least the dust on them looked the same), and one of them still didn't work. I admit I have never had to warranty a Gig card (at least in the last 10 years).

ACX is arguably one of the best manufacture cooling setups on graphics cards. I mean you're talking a few degrees maybe but if I have the option I tend to go EVGA with my products. Their warranty and customer service alone make it worth purchasing over others. That and they're pretty aftermarket cooler friendly

Did I mention how much I hate CL? I posted my case, water cooling setup, PSU and a few other parts and I got tons of interest including a few people that told me that they will call me after work to setup a time to meet. Yep, still waiting...

I've been trying to sell my couches and probably had 20 people email me asking to take a look.
Guess how many people have actually looked at them

I got the MSI. Great card. Got it for cheaper, as it tends to go down to 315 every few weeks.

The front of the card (part that is opposite to the pci connector lights up with the MSI logo, in white. Don't know if you care, but some people have their PCs all rigged up with custom led and colors. I was surprised to see this. I got that and a case fan (blue led), so nothing matches in my case. But I dont care.

So after reading a lot of forums and finding that the H70 may work, I actually bought the X31 from NZXT along with the bracket, as it does have longer hoses that might ease install.

I like the idea of their software and variable speed pump too.

I may put my H70 back on my CPU during the install, but we'll see.

For all that, EVGA refuses to include a backplate with the card. For that reason I chose the G1 Gaming. I don't believe the regular MSI model comes with a back plate either, you have to get one of the special editions.

my EVGA 970 came with the backplate since Newegg tends to throw it in with the card.

In the first couple weeks they were doing it as a promo. Now they're $20-$30.

oh ok. i bought mine 3 days ago and it came with the backplate and Batman Arkham knight (they really should have paid me to take this game, what a POS).

on a side note, people with the Define R4 and R5, can we talk fans for a second? the case comes with 2 140mm fans, one front and one back. i plan on mounting the H80I on the back and move the OEM fan to the front. that gives me 2 intakes 1 exhaust. now i am debating if i should add 2 more fans on top as exhaust and one on bottom next to the PSU for intake. i already have very nice Corsair fans that i can use. what do you have in your case?
