Default Need to change parking brake shoes?

So my emergency brakes are wearing out (e brake handle went sky high) so they were adjusted and engage in like 5 clicks. But i'm just wondering if the brake shoes every wear out like brake pads? When do you replace them? Is it hard to replace them?

they do wear out, but it takes a long long long long time. Unless you're doing handbrake turns. if you are your 5mt center diff will die first.

The ebrake cable will stretch out before the pads wear. That's probably what happened.

(unless you use the ebrake while moving...)

Anyone else notice the loud "CLUNK" if you engage the ebrake when going anywhere over 3mph?

^ my 2006 does this sometimes. I feel the parking brake dragging and at low speed I just have to pull on the handle a little to un-stick them.
But when I do, I hear a loud clunk, and feel it too.

After that they are not dragging.

Ok, I'm working on my car, replacing the parking brake pads on one side due to wear... and I swear to God I friggin' HATE the stupid keeper springs in the middle of the pad.

Ok, got the hardware put on. Now, the rotor will not fit back over the pads.
The adjuster is all the way reduced to make pad diameter small as it goes but old rotor will not fit over. What am I missing?
Do I just take it all off and try again? It's all lined up and everything sure looks correct.

Any ideas? I'd love any input

IIRC they are a pain to get properly lined up. Also, could you have reversed something? It has been a few years, but I remember having a moment of 'crap, did this piece face the front of the car or rear?'. They do fit tight, are you sure the rotor doesn't fit over? If you've double-checked the install, are you sure you have the right shoes? Could you have possibly gotten STI ones or thicker adapter shoes (needed for the Legacy on Brembo swaps, not sure about the WRX).

Once you are sure everything is assembled correctly pull up on the parking brake a few times. This helps center everything so you can slide the rotor on.

Ok, so centering isn't the problem as the rotor hits the pads and stops before the studs touch the rotor.
New pads appear identical in dimension to old.

I took everything off and put back on, same problem.
My only thought I have as of now is I adjusted my cable 2 months ago and back then i had my original parking brake pads.
I tightened the cable a fair amount under center storage bin.

Would the tightened cable with old pads cause the new pads to not be able to get small enough? Do I need to loosen the cable adjuster?

I'm thinking of removing a small amount of metal where the star adjuster touches each shoe at the bottom. Like 0.5mm each side, then the rotor might fit over.
Is this NOT recommended?

Yeah don't do that. Not 100% sure about Subaru, but there should be a primary and secondary shoe. Make sure you have in correct location. Everything looks ok, always hard to diag without actually being there. Compare parts to other side to make sure parts are correct. Including the new adjuster.

New pads fixed the problem, rotors slid back over them.
Now, I cant get the pads to bite on any type of incline.

Adjusting them from behind the rotor through the slot.. I have a pretty hard time doing that. Not much room there.
I took off rotors and adjusted until rotor would not go back on, turned it back a few clicks and rotor slid back on. But still not biting.

So I go to adjust the cable under center console and adjust it all the way tight, still won't bite.
Then I noticed maybe the metal where cable meets adjuster nuts looks bent.

Here's another video showing the bend I'm talking about. Is that supposed to be straight?

Well I just saw a video of another 2007 WRX and their adjuster linkage is bent just like mine. Guess it's like that from factory.

I finally got them to bite correctly. I just needed to expand them a few more turns at the star adjuster.

Now they work great again holding the car on a good incline both forward and backward.

Editted: Nevermind. I scanned through the posts too quickly.
You fixed the issue of it binding for no reason by swapping in new shoes and hardware?
