Default Help identifying Outback engine

I have an opportunity to purchase a 2012 Outback 2.5i Premium with 177,000 miles. The car is in great shape and maintenance appears to be kept up fairly well but I know this car needs head gaskets. So I've been trying to identify specifically what engine is in this to determine if I would simply be better off rebuilding the engine. I can see the EJ25 stamp on the front top of the block and to best of my ability I can tell it's either the EJ255 or EJ253. How can I tell specifically which engine this is?

Its not an EJ255 was the turbo motor for the Legacy GT as well as the forester in earlier years. You have the plain jane Ej253 it was in outbacks from 06 to 2012 if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the follow up! This will help me get some parts priced out to determine what direction I’m going to go with this. I mean the car runs pretty good as it is and doesn’t leak any fluids so regardless of gaskets or an entire rebuild, I likely can’t go wrong for $2500

Gaskets are simple enough if you have the tools and knowledge to do it. Rockauto can normally source them for around 300 total, that's gaskets, timing belt kit ect. I would have the heads planed tho with that many miles and having issues, just my .02 tho

Depending on your country of origin that model may have a sticker/plate on the left B pillar (driver side door frame) that shows vin, engine, trans.
