I shot 72 on the par 56 exec with my buddies today. Perfect weather, 65 and clear with little wind. Such a nice course for the money. I was pretty good and played safe off the tee, my putting was good but my chipping was terrible. So bad, I was either blading or coming up way short with nothing good, so I just started putting from the fairway and would get it tap-in close. Two birdies and a good string of pars, just a bad start and one in the pond on 18.

Still no playable weather here, but that's to be expected. Still haven't made my "new" (to me) hybrid decision yet. The 1 I want (RBZ Tour 3h) are still going for too much if you can find a good condition one that hasn't been sky-marked into oblivion. Will keep looking. I LOVE the way the newest Taylormade SIM hybrid looks (and from people who have hit it, it seems to not be a go-left machine), but I dunno how I feel about dropping $250+ for a hybrid without an upgraded shaft.

Tiger is back this week at Torrey Pines! I love watching the pro golf the next few weeks (Torrey Pines, Phoenix Open, I abhor the TV coverage at Pebble though, and the Genesis at Riviera I like seeing)

I haven't seen the SIM hybrid and haven't researched it too much. My issue with the TM hybrids has been they traditionally sit very upright. My irons are all 2* flat and I probably could have gone 2.5* flat. My fitter was telling me about how the TM hybrids sit about 3-4* upright in their neutral position. I think most every hybrid sits upright to begin with but Titleist and Ping were the 2 which were more neutral and the Taylormade was the most upright.

I ended up with the Titleist 816h, I can then adjust it to sit more flat. It's been a world of change for me. I can actually hit a cut (my preferred flight with my woods) with it.

https://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/...055493901.html

Saw those the other day browsing Craigslist. Let me know if you are interested and I could try to pick it up and you could Paypal me.

I had another lesson last night and seem to have been so focused on my swing path, that I have forgotten to keep my rear shoulder lower through the downswing. It was super nice getting that feeling back with way less fade and more yards. There's still a lot of work to do on my driver swing but it's getting there. I know I can hit bombs and will be practicing this weekend. I hit my "new" CBX wedges and they spin like crazy on full swings. The irons are showing up today and I'm going to the range tonight to test them before I regrip them.

Check GolfWRX, they have lots of info from this weeks PGA Show in orlando. Lots of ideas. I have a Callaway Rogue 3H I got from Callawaygoldpreowned that I hit really well. And I get what you mean about the RBZ hybrid... you can pull my RBZ 4H from my cold dead hands.

Anyone using Arccos sensors and Arccos Caddie app? I was gifted a set, and have played two rounds thus far. I've never used any sort of range finder or gps devices, so I found the app to be extremely useful out on course. You could just leave it in your pocket and let it track shots, but you can also use it as a yardage book when courses don't have them.

I'm really liking the statistics it compiles, giving me smart yardage stats for each club etc. I really had no idea what my distances were for each club, and even after only two rounds, it is pretty obvious I was usually over estimating each club by 10-15 yards. Also obvious is the very wide gap I have between my TM M1 3HL wood (set at 18.5deg) and my TM M1 5-hybrid (set a 25.5deg.) 220-230yds for the 3 wood, and only 180yds for the 5-hy. I might try picking up a 3-hybrid to slip into that gap.

And not sure if it because I actually paid attention to the course, used the app for finding distances, or just got lucky, but I shot a 1 under today on a decent 9 hole course. I was actually 2 under until I lipped out a par putt on the 8th.

The main thing the app allowed me to do was position a landing point for my tee shot on the aerial view, and see where the most danger fell. There were several par 4s where my typical driver would have landed at the narrowest part of the hole, with lots of trees crowding the fairway. I backed up my tee shots 20-30yds and hit a 3-wood instead. Then I had a very consistent 150-160yd approach shot. I hit 8/9 fairways and greens, and the one time I didn't I was maybe 2' into the short rough. It was such a different way of playing compared to "pound driver into danger, have a tough relief shop, hit another to get on the green, then two putt for bogie."

I've never even approached being under par before.

Neat. I have seen the app, but only use Golf Pad app for quick yardages and keeping my score and tend to play the same 4-5 courses where I know the layout since I need all the help I can get.

I hit the range and tested the "new" Cleveland CBX irons ($230 for 5-PW from Global's eBay) and they feel as good as the $1000 Pings I was fitted for a few weeks ago. Light shaft with cast, cavity back heads. Hit probably 70 balls at night with crappy range lighting and standard grips. Going to regrip the set with midsize grips tomorrow and put em in the bag. Can't wait to hit em in the daytime with new grips. They're not pretty, but much more consistent than my forged RSi 2s and better for my skill level. I haven't hit a 5 iron as pure and straight as I was able to hit tonight. The lessons have helped for sure but the clubs feel good man.

Range at sunset in SOCAL.

You're learning course management. A great skill to develop instead of "hit and see". An app like this is great, but 2 suggestions, 1) don't use it as a crutch. Don't get into the habit of *having* to use it for every shot, and dependent on it. Why? That's #2. 2) Be quick about using it. Have it on and measuring as you walk to your ball. Don't wait to get to your ball before you take it out, and then turn it on, and then log in. Oh, the app closed... need to re-open it. (Can you tell I've been there/done that? I had used a similar program with club measurers, called GameGolf. Still have them if anyone wants to buy them.)

I play with people that not only analyze, but over analyze and get decision paralysis and take *FOR-EVER* to play their shots because they're twiddling with their stuff, "If I" "I need to" "How far is it to that tree, that and... that." And they're playing with their stuff while everyone else has either a) already hit or b) can't hit yet, because they are a little further up, but would be in the way of the analyzer.

Using it now to get your distances, great. Phenominal. One should always know how their range any particular club will send the ball. Once you know that, the rest should be easy and you stop using the stuff.

I, personally use a Garmin X40 (in combination with laser). The Garmin is small, lightweight sport watch that has GPS for distances to front/middle/back, and to yardage markers (200/150/100), and also to hazards, I mean "penalty areas" are what they're now called (traps and water, including how many to clear). It's all numbers, no pretty pictures... but, it's quick, always on and ready to go. It also asks you which club you "just" used so you can go back and analyze the same way the arccos does, and it also will ask you your score as you move off one green to the next. I use that as a backup to the card (if someone else is keeping score.) I've found if I realize what I'm shooting, I'll screw it up, or worse, be over confident. ANd when that happens, I get more hard on myself than I should.

Laser, nice straight line distance to almost anything, including "how far away are those in front of us" which is important for "can I safely hit yet?" And also even faster than GPS for trees, visible traps, etc... Also, Laser can tell you exact distance to the pin. In combination with GPS for front/middle/back (or the 100/150/200 markers and knowledge of green depth) can tell you where your safe shots on the green should be.

At that Laser > GPS any day of the week. I can't tell you how many times some on has said "But MY GPS says..." after I shoot with a laser. Lasers are accurate within a yard (That's +/- 1/2 yard). GPS is accurate, for the most part, when it has a good signal, +/- 3 yards... a 6 yard window. (Lots of people think it's 3 yards, with 1.5 yds of error). That's 18 feet of *possible* error of being on or off the green. When it doesn't have a good signal, it won't tell you the margin of error, either, because it doesn't know. It just says "I think we're here".

But, as I said, yes I do use GPS, because it's convenient. Just don't rely on it. A laser, though, is a much more trustworthy asset for distances to have. There are some lasers that have GPS in them. Garmin and Bushnell being the top 2.

Good call on looking at 2nd Swing...I'll probably waffle over this for like a month or 2 or if I have a couple of drinks while watching golf tomorrow or Sat that decision might just happen

I use the Garmin S20 watch with a Bushnell laser when it really has to be dialed in ... I'm always the fastest player in my group. Nothing ruins a round more than a player who over thinks every swing/shot. Makes the game harder on everyone.

If you know your general gaps, there shouldn't be much of a debate about what to hit ... especially if you're familiar with the course. I think there is way more value in going to a gap test session at a reputable testing center than there is for the Arcos system. I find those more distracting than anything else

I think it was 2 seasons ago but I got a free subscription to the 18Birdies pro edition for shot tracking. After you select the course and tees and whatnot it has you track every shot. Then it compiles reports and you can see a lot of good data. The problem is it's tedious as heck and completely took me away from actually playing and concentrating on the round and enjoying myself. I think I used it 3-4 times and stopped so I could just play golf. I don't need that much data and prefer to just go have fun and not really track anything more than my score.

Side note - I forgot this is when CBS gets their coverage started. They are by far the worst coverage. Sir Nick Faldo needs to be locked away in a shed so we don't have to listen to his drivel. He's the worst.

I played my local 6-hole par 3 course at lunch. It wasn't on the Arccos Caddie course list initially, so I emailed them to get it added. They asked me to send a scorecard and make some notes on an aerial map image. Which I did. They said look for the course to be added in 3-5 days. It was added in 1 day.

The nice part with this setup is there is no "manually adding shot info", as it does it automagically. It knows what club you hit based on the sensor. Took me 5-10 seconds to get distance to flag, put it back in my pocket, took my shot. It is pretty easy to fine tune the pin location too if you want putting distance info to be more accurate.

So far I'm enjoying the statistics, and it helps with club choice. You can make using it as fiddly as you want, just like any other device.

Garmin watch wearer here. While I give up a precise yardage for front/middle/back, I gain enough back with line of site and ease of use. Stopped using the lasers like 5 years ago.

Made a slight setup change last night in video golf (Trackman bays). Great with long clubs (averaging about 270 with a straight ball flight and low spin), not so much with irons. Still missing to the right with my irons.

I couldn't watch more than a hole or 2 of the PGA tournament yesterday/Sunday with CBS being so terrible at coverage. Looked like an exciting finish, with Rahm almost storming back.

So, related to what I want as far as a new 3 hybrid, I have the opportunity to buy a new Taylormade SIM Max hybrid w/ a real-deal Graphite Design Tour AD-DI 85g stiff shaft for $260 brand new built/shipped direct from Taylormade. I'm tempted as heck because if I don't like it I could sell it and probably not lose $. And if you were to do the same custom build on TM's website, it would cost over $500. Very tempted...

I love my Garmin watch. I have had it 4 or 5 years now and it still works great, although when not used for a while the charging is a little wonky.

I can't stand Faldo either, but I fell asleep and missed most of Rahm's comeback.

Seems like a good gamble on the TM hybrid to me. You might get close to that on trade in even if it doesn't work out.

I played yesterday and shot 84. The course was really wet and sloppy, but glad to have to got out. Distance and direction was tough because of the cold and wind, but I hit the ball really well. Putting was terrible - had six 3 putts, but I also count putting from the fringe/first cut as a putt, so that may be misleading.

Sunsets are starting to creep later around here, and after this week will be 5:30 and later, so I am hoping to get some practicing in after work as the weather cooperates.

I had a Garmin watch that I used for 2 seasons, but then was gifted a laser rangefinder and gave the watch to my brother in law. It worked great, but I just don't like wearing watches.

Gonna have to schedule some indoor time with my wife, as she wants to try out her new Epic Flash driver. Other than that it's gonna be too cold and/or wet to actually go to a course.

I bit the bullet and ordered the Taylormade SIM hybrid with the Graphite Design DI shaft (89g, x flex). The website (TGW.com) has a 100% 90-day credit refund on custom clubs if I don't like the club, too, but I doubt that'll be the case. Now I just have to cross my fingers they actually fulfill the order since the shaft is a $250 upgrade on Taylormade's website.

After only playing maintenance rounds over the past few months, I feel like I am no longer 'burnt' out on golf. As much as I love year round golf, having that winter break in Ohio really helped me stay focused all golf season long. Here in Phoenix it was like a 3 year long golf season. After my trip to Toronto in September I realized I just wasn't really enjoying it that much so I stepped back.

I shot 77 on Saturday at TPC Scottsdale Champions (the sister course to the WMO course). Everything was really solid. I didn't do anything great, but every part of my game was 'pretty good' if that makes sense. I hit most every fairway and the few I missed, I missed in good spots. I hit a lot of greens but wasn't sticking anything in there tight. I didn't make any long putts but I also didn't have a 3 putt and I buried the 2 good looks at birdie that I had. It was a good round but I was outdone by my buddy who shot 75

This new handicap system has me way too low lol. After my 77 this weekend, I have dropped to a 3.4 index. That's getting close to my lowest index ever. My degenerate buddy from Ohio is coming in town in March and we will no doubt have some expensive rounds with a lot on the line. I'm in need of some good scores dropping out

I'm heading to the WMO this Friday. I just got General Admin tickets so I won't be camping out in the Stadium on 16 but it will be fun to walk around a bit.
