The building I work in has two entrances (via stairs and via elevator). Both entrances require a key card twice (once to get into the building/elevator, second to open a door to the floor). The building is connected to one of our dining halls (shared wall but still same door/elevator access to enter).
Around 11:30 I decide to head down to the dining hall for lunch. Knowing that I've got a semi-urgent item to address I just grab my key card and not my keys, wallet, or phone. As I'm getting up I see an email come in about the building. I took a quick glance but didn't read in depth. I should have paid attention to this bit... All current staff's building access should remain active. However, Facilities Services' Electronic Access Control has recently performed a mass clearout of expired and inactive building access permissions, so it is possible (though, we hope, unlikely) that current and returning staff may have issues accessing address in the next few days....I removed the address but the bold bit is per the email. Well, turns out I was one of the unlikely people...along with every other employee I ran into downstairs. And it wasn't just the address noted above, but also for the dining hall (separate address). All key card building access was kaput. At first I thought I'll just go home, I've got a work laptop there. Nope! My keys are upstairs. Then I thought I'd log into a computer downstairs, the way it's set up you can log into any computer on campus and it'll load your profile. Nope! 2FA requires authentication against your phone and that's upstairs. Thankfully a couple people were still at their desks upstairs and were able to block open the 2x doors to get us trapped folks back inside. Looks like someone pulled that new "protocol for building access" lever a bit too hard.

Something similar happened to me a few weeks ago but that was due to some sort of glitch/failure with the badge reader system.

Ours get reset without notice every once in a while for no discernible reason nor any plausible explanation is ever offered.
On top of that we've learned we have to scrub the access list ourselves about every quarter because we continually find people with access who definitely shouldn't have it (and likely never knew they did). Super duper ultra secret project in here. 5 people are the only ones who should have access to this door. Pulls list...300 names. WTF? Who are these people?!? Cleaning staff, building maintenance, security, health & safety, the lady who waters the office plants, the company that refills coffee supplies, IT... That's like 200 of the names right there. Then look and see name of every single manager, director, VP, office assistants. Okay, take *all* of those people off. Nope. Those people have to have run of every building. Corporate policy. Look at remainder of list. Okay, these 10 people I know personally and shouldn't be on here. How did they get approved and added? *crickets*shrug* "We'll remove them." (4 days later) *Access Denied* WTF? Somehow the 5 people who have been working in there every day got removed. Have to go thru process to get Director approval and get Security to reinstate access. Rinse. Repeat. I know how a lot of the randoms get added. Joey here is a new hire or being transferred to new group. What does he need access to? "Oh, just find someone else in that group and give Joey the same access as that person." "Whoa! This f4phantomii dude has a huge list of access! I'll copy his list over to the new guy...that should cover just about anything." |

Oh dear sweet baby infant jesus please pray for me.
We made spaghetti over the weekend and I decided I'd have the leftovers tonight. Hey look! My son didn't eat them all yet! That's odd, I don't remember putting it in that container. Oh well. Nom nom nom nom. Pull out dishwasher rack to put away dirty dish. There, sitting in the rack, is the empty container I now distinctly remember putting the leftovers in. But then that means... "Honey, when was the last time we had spaghetti?" (MrsF4): Oh, it was Easter weekend, because [our kid] was home. So yeah, I just had month old spaghetti. Pray you never hear the nightmare noises rumbling from my gut. My angus is not prepared. I'm pretty sure around midnight I'm going to be strapping myself down to the toilet. Thank god tomorrow is a WFH day because I suspect I'm going to be spending about 8 hours on the can. |

Either way its on company time. At least at home I've got the bidet and can curl up in the fetal position under the shower afterwards all pale and shivering.

Actually, its funny you mentioned that.
Prior to my discovery of the true age of the spaghetti, I happened by a bottle of rum sitting on the counter. (Note that although its been 25+ years since we were in college, we still have half-empty bottles of liquor left over from college. We are not big drinkers.) I was headed to get just a small amount of something to drink. And I didn't want anything with caffeine that late, and water just wasn't appealing. For reasons I still can't explain, I opened the bottle and poured a finger of rum into my glass. My wife was standing there with a look of shock on her face. I just shrugged and said its been a crappy week, to which she readily agreed. I couldn't even begin to tell you the last time I had alcohol at home on a weeknight. It was probably pre-kids. Remarkably, I am alive this AM without having lost 6lb of water weight overnight. My stomach was swollen to the size of a bowling ball from gas, but that is finally subsiding. |

Some of the Starlink satellites flew over last night and all of the local dolts think they saw UFOs.

Uh, they fly over every night?
And if you can see a starlink satellite you must have x-ray vision too... |

The door access stupidity continued
They "fixed" it yesterday around 2-3 PM...I tested various doors and all was good. This morning I head into the loading dock for the dining hall to take the elevator up to my floor (totally normal process for me). I can call the elevator but can't get through the door at the end of the hall. So back down the elevator and around to the front of the building. I can get in the front door but can't get through the door from the public area into the offices. I hang out there expecting someone else to come by and, after a short while, someone else does. She couldn't access the elevator but did have access to that door. She said that yesterday she had 100% access. I understand the desire to re-visit access to the building...and we were given a form to fill out (and be approved by our supervisor) for this new "protocol"...but, my dudes, how about setting a deadline for filling out that form THEN making changes to access. This immediate take away access then wait for the forms to come in is asinine. |

re door access:
We have two badges. One for the hospital and another for the rest of the campus. My campus badge would get me in places that I occasionally visit, but a) I don't know where I put it and b) in these COVID times hospital-based people try to avoid using the campus badge, because doing so gets one on a list to get pestered about using this or that app to self-attest to lack of symptoms daily. Ain't nobody got time for that, so I wait outside campus buildings to be let in when I must go to them. |

I've been in the office for the duration of this whole thing...sure I'll wear a mask, wash my hands, 6 foot distance, symptom self check...but will avoid all the "are you sure?" measures in place 'cause I'm so over being asked the same crap daily. |

Before the new card system was installed, somehow my old card was put in the handicapped access list, so I'd badge into a building and doors would magically open.

I stand corrected. I mean I know they're in LEO but didn't figure they were that big.

They did push them to a slightly higher orbit because all the institutional and amateur astronomers were complaining.
