Make: 05 WRX STi

Mileage: 34,000

Time Out Of Use: Total for all their BS 7 days

Problem And Likely Cause: Sway bar flipped bending endlinks around lateral link arm

Modifications: Full exhaust

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: Abusive Driving

Your Story: My Struts were bad and needed replacing, a common problem in the STi's so I go in and tell them my struts are bad. They ask what do you mean bad? So I explain the rattling from the trunk in detail.
They told me it was my exhaust hitting the heat shield, not the struts. I took it in again same thing... its my exhaust.
Finally I brought a friend from RalliTek in with me to show them it was the struts. So they set up to replace them.

After I got all that done I needed new tires, so I got my tires and alignment about 4 weeks after my struts were done. In the middle of the alignment the guy tells me you need to come check this out. so I go out there and look. And sure enough my factory sway bar had flipped. Bending the endlinks and putting major dents in both lateral link arms.

I took it back to the dealership where I was told that this is not factory, so warranty doesn't cover it. I said how is it not factory? I haven't touched the suspension, the only people that have are you guys 4 weeks ago when you did my struts. They tell me when they do the struts it has nothing to do with the sway bar so its impossible what they did caused that. They blamed it on the prior owner, my exhaust, me, aftermarket parts (that aren't on my car, since I haven't touched the suspension)anyone but themselves. They said judging by the wear its been rubbing like that for awhile. I have to dissagree, since aluminum is going to wear quickly when something is rubbing against it.

They said well we must have missed that when we were putting in the struts and we should have caught it. They didn't catch it because it wasn't there when they put my struts in. The GM keept telling me this must be the source of your noises not the struts. I said no when the struts were replaced the noises were gone.

So their final explaination of how it happend was that I was going 100+ mph around a corner and thats what caused the sway bar to flip. Ya okay you caught me, on my bald tires that would lose 10 psi in one day, I was racing.

My story is very similar to RN's but I really really hope they atleast put the struts in right. After making a scene they are agreeing to replace the endlinks but still denying they caused it and wont replace the lateral arms.

That definitely is almost exactly what happened to me. Check your paperwork to see what parts they say they actually put in versus what they told you. In my case, they lied to my face, telling me they replaced them both. 5 days later, the endlinks were pretzels. I'd say it's quite likely they're related (strut replacement and resulting damage) since we now have multiple cases of the exact same thing, with both happening soon after the work was done. At least they only suggested you were going fast, haha. Mine said I was doing 3+ foot jumps in reverse at 65+ mph while avoiding falling trees during Hurricane Ivan.

If you have friends that know suspension, check their install on your struts. It's possible it's in completely wrong or that they never even replaced your parts.

Default I am having the same trouble.

I have been experiencing the same problem on a 05 sti. I had the end links replaced and it seemed to help but the clunking came back a day later. I have schedule to take the car back to the dealer on Monday. Have you had any luck in fixing the problem?

His car was great up untll 900 miles when he started noticing a clunk, thud, bang whatever u want to call it when he's braking to a complete stop.

It has been submitted for service, first time they said it was a loose jack in the suspension. (No idea what that is) The next day they told him to pick up the car. He picked it up checked it in the parking lot of the dealer. the problem was still there but it happen only once, the tried several times to try to recreate it and it was gone. He took the car home the following day as hes driving on his lunch break, he makes a 110 - 120 degree left hand turn at 20 miles a hour and the clunk sounds off. then he checks it at the following stop light and the clunk sounds off. after he returns from his lunch break he calls the service dept at the subaru dealer they did the repair at. They said they ordered a part for the car, but didnt inform him the previous day of that. and they said they would call him when it came in. a week and a half later he gets a call, the service rep tells him the part is in and a appointment is scheduled for dec. 17 2003. the car was droped off the day before at night. He gets a call on dec. 17 (today) at about 5 pm saying the car is ready to get picked up. He picks up the car and drives away from the dealer with out checking this time if the clunk is there. Finally he realises he didnt check, at an upcoming stop light he presses the brake suddenly to check if the clunk is still there. It's still there. The service dept replaced the right rear strut, the strut mount, and anther part initialed CP R. (no idea what that is) This is the 2nd time in 2 weeks the car has been in service for the same problem. He is starting to think his car is a lemon, and is extremely pissed off as he got a new car because his old car a Ford Contour was breaking down on him too much. I feel sorry for him as he took my advice to buy the car he really likes my subaru, i virtually had no problems with mine at all, other then it shutting off on in cold wheather when the car was new.

He's going to call SOA if the problem is not fixed the next time, he is taking it to a different dealer, the next time, which is probably within a week.

He said if it ends up being a lemon he will NOT get a subaru ever again. He said the will look into the EVO instead.

Now the lemon law here in illinois is 4 times with in a year for the same problem. OR "30 or more days in service in a year or 12000 miles which ever comes first"

So what is everyone's elses opinion on this issue.

Liberty Subaru- " Aftermarket sway bars are known to cause the problem. Cannot warranty the struts with the sways on. Put back old sways to get warranty. " At this point i just got fed up of arguing and left.

Bill K. Jr Subaru- Same story.. only one step further "Your aftermarket parts void your suspension warranty"

Reviving an old thread here, but it seems like I've read about STi's flipping their swaybars when the suspension is at full drop. This is why the dealership is surmising that you've gotten the car airborne.
I believe this can happen also on a lift where the suspension is uncompressed, as it would be when replacing struts. If either of you are still angry about this, it might be worth bringing up.

I have tried contacting SOA and the dealer about it to no avail. In the next few months, I'll give it one more try and if the result isn't to my satisfaction, I won't be buying another Subaru.

Problem And Likely Cause: Snapped right rear endlink and bent left rear endlink probably caused by a pothole.

Your Story: Back end felt kind of loose when coming out a hard turn so I jacked up the rear and found the endlinks were bent and broken. Went to the dealer and asked to have it fixed under warranty. Even though I had JDM STI Pinks installed, the service manager didn't ask any questions and fixed it all under warranty. She even offered to throw in a free car wash if I had time (I politely declined )

Your Story: I brought my car to my local subie dealer told them up front what was in the car for mods and about the clunking, dropped it off, an hour later they called me back saying this is becoming a normal problem with the 06/07 STi's and that they'll be putting new struts in it the following week. Reason for Denial: They said that because the vehicle looks like it has been in an accident, they will not warranty the strut.

My Story: Brought the car in because it was pulling to the right just a little bit, i thought it needed an alignment. They called me back saying it was a bad/bent strut and that they (Patrick Subaru in MA) would not cover it under warranty because it looked like the car had been hit. Which is B/S, i have a clean carfax and it's just the slightest bit bent. I will probably try another couple of dealerships before i contact SOA.

Bent is not a matter for warranty. It is not a defect. Anything caused by an outside influence is not a matter for warranty. Somewhere along the line, you or someone else driving your car hit something, whether it was a pothole or curb, to cause it to bend.

This would be a matter for your insurance company, not warranty. But, I am sure your deductible is more than the repair itself, or close to it.

Problem And Likely Cause: Don't know the cause but 2 of my rear wheel bolts get broken, and fall off.

Modifications: SPT catback, UR rally armor mudflaps.

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): YES

Reason Given For Denial: They said that It's my fault because I didn't tight the lug nuts.

Your Story: Hi. First of all sorry for any gramma errors but I will try to be as clear as I can.

I don't know how could it happened, but my left rear wheel almost fall off while driving on a highway yestarday.
Whole story:
I've got 5k miles on my 08 WRX. Yestarday driving about 70mph on a highway I've start feeling vibrations on my steering wheel, I thought that is crappy IL roads, but after about 30 sec my wheel fall off and fortunetly hold down inside wheel arch, and I was able to pull over to the left side.
What I've noticed 2 bolts where cracked. After I put my wheel back on 3 screws just to drive my car away from the bridge it drove "bumpy" style like something was bended inside.

Another thing is, that from about a week or so I was feeling light vibrations ocasionally on the road, and noticed that my car is kinda lagging, got less power. I was thinking that maybe something's wrong with turbo. This is my first WRX and I was talking to my friend who had couple of STI's, and know a lot about subarus about it and he just said that I'm getting this kind of "turbo dissease", you know: start hearing weird noises inside the engine, and craving the power.
Just to meke it clear- wheels and tires are stock, never taken off, never had flat tire, never messed with any of wheels. I didn't took them off for puting mudflaps on. Dealer showed marks on screws to me, but didn't listen that those screws were brought on scene by my friend because I lost them all.
They didn't even looked inside. I don't know if this is posible for bearing problem or something like this.
Dealer: ROTO in Arlington Hts., IL

Maybe a vandal? Either way - maybe check with your car insurance coverage if you have comprehensive. If there is damage to your vehicle, they can help investigate the problem and if it is a manuf. defect, they will fight for you. I mean, you pay high insurance rates for reasons like this! Let them take up the fight. Just a thought - -
