Default Track Day Oil Recommendation

What engine oil do you guys use for your WRX or STi for doing track day lapping?

I have a Stg. 2 STi and do track days in MSR Cresson, TX (Dallas/Ft.Worth Area)

So far, for the past 2-3 years, I have been using Mobil 1 5W-40 Diesel Synthetic Truck Oil to protect my engine.

Recently I figured out that Mobil 1 isn't grp IV oil anymore.
There are better oils off the shelf at local Auto Parts out there for the price such as:

German Castrol 0w-30 (as thick as 37 weight)
Shell Rotella Full Synth 5W-40.

(Off the shelf = local parts store)

Is it really necessary to go w/ THICK 20W-50 on a Stg.2 STi which only laps every 30 mins session or so in a non competitive environment? I'm trying to find all around oil if available.

Inputs from track day whore is appreciated..

I use Motul 8100 5w40 and it works great. Very minimal consumption, I usually end up adding half a quart or less over the course of a full weekend event. I had similar results with Motul 300V 5w40 but it wasn't worth more than twice the cost. When I was using Mobil 1 I was burning a lot of oil, now I won't go near that stuff. Although I know a lot of people that use it in Porsches, BMWs, etc. with very good results.

I use 15W-50 Mobil 1 and have been very happy. Doesn't eat oil at all and oil temps seem to be slightly lower.

I'll probably go back to 5W-30 in the winter, but honestly, I doubt the car will be out of the garage much at all anyway.

Cool, I might give a heavier weight a try next summer. At my power level now the 5w40 is fine but in the off season I'll be adding close to 100whp so everything will run a bit hotter on the track. I was a little worried that 15w50 was too heavy but maybe I'll switch to Motul 300V 15w50 for the summer.

i've been running Eneos 0w-50w for the past year and a half. car sees mostly track days, never any problems. of course, AZ. climate is different.

i just switched to Motul 300v 5w-40, so we'll see how that does.

Hmm 0W-50....
Seems like the best to protect both cold and hot..

How much is it per 1 qt?

Edit..
Seems like I can find one local:

10w30 here in cali, running it in about 4 cars and no problems... Royal Purple, Red Line, and Mobile 1. Haven't noticed a difference between them.

Motul 300V 5w-40 here, will get the UOA back from the 300V 5w-30 with ~4K miles and 50 minutes of lapping probably next week. This run of oil will have 81 autocross/ProSolo laps and ~6K miles

Should be sufficient for a trackday. If you need a place to get NASIOC deals on Motul, PM me

I've been using the same with similar positive results like mav1c. Oil temps are steady and very little burn, car has ~30K. This is including SoCal summers.

I noticed my oil temps were about 10 degrees higher with Mobil 1 15w-50 than with the 5w-30. 5w-40 sounds like a good compromise.

I've run quite a few oils in my track car.

Castrol Syntec 5w50
Mobil 1 - 15w50
Valvoline Racing 20w50
Shell 15w40 (non synthetic)

No issues with any of them. Car sees no street time at all. Oil changes every other event (roughly)

No more track car for me

I use German Castrol (BMW Long Life Approved) on my current car.

I also use Shell Rotella T on both Saab 92X Aero and Triumph Sprint ST 1050 w/ Purolator Pure One Oil Filter (3.25" length PL14610 - about .75" longer than OE length)

I use Rotella T in the NA rally car, it sees as much high RPM hot weather use as any track car plus all the dust of a rally car. good stuff.

Anyone using the Rotella T non-synthetic 15w40 on the track? Or just the synthetic 5w40?

I ran the non synthetic this last track weekend. I haven't sent the sample off to get checked though, so I can't really give you any data on how well it did.

Seriously, if you're dropping it every couple of engine hours, do you really think it matters? Moreover, I don't imagine you're firing it up and competing in really frigid conditions where a synthetic truly shines.
