I think the worst I had was one who was a slob that joined a frat, ate a large pizza and a 12pack of beer every night. He put on the freshman 60. But I only lived with him one quarter.
All the others were friends and we mutually agreed to be roomies.

My dorm roomie and I didn't get along. I'm convinced that we were paired because we both claimed we liked hiphop on our questionnaires. That was literally the only thing we had in common.
Me: Introverted, video gamer, early/late classes, "normal" sleep schedule, didn't party very much. Roomie: Extroverted, frat pledge, partied all the time, barely went to class. We went to dinner together at the dining hall once. The silence was deafening. He once pounded on our door at 2am on a Wednesday as I was sleeping (getting ready for an 8am class), opened it, yelled at me to answer the phone when the pizza guy called, and then slammed the door and ran off. He also once lost his pledge pin for a week. Our room was ransacked, turned upside down, as he looked for it. He finally found it. He did NOT tidy the room back up. Side note, the guy's dad's was named James Bond. |

By the time I graduated the universities had figured out "Holy s**t, we're throwing away a f**king gold mine every year!" So right after I left they started a "Freshman Experience" program to handhold everyone and provide a lot more academic and mental health support. People who bombed their first test and otherwise would have just said "eff it, I'm out" now got counseling and paired up with people doing well to help reinforce good habits. A lot more social activities, group events, field trips, transportation arranged, movie nights, paintball, rock climbing, rafting, etc. I will say it seemed to have a huge benefit on retention for people who just needed another 6-9 months to mature and figure out how to be a responsible adult after high school. My freshman year, I didn't know a soul except my roommate. Neither of us had a car. We ate in the dining hall nearly every night. There wasn't even dialup. A 386 PC was a $2000 extravagance that almost nobody had. I had a black & white tube amp TV with a coat hanger for an antenna and got 2.5 static filled channels most days. And I was lucky to have that. Campus was an oasis in the dead center of a huge city, yet it was dangerous to walk alone a block off campus. If you weren't on an NCAA team or in a frat, you knew maybe a half dozen people on your hall and there was nothing to do but study. My senior year, every single dorm room had broadband ethernet and cable TV. Fast food places popped up all around. A few dorms had gone co-ed. I look back on my freshman year and wonder how I made it sometimes. |

The best dormmate in college I ever had was a frat dude. He was a nice guy, super tall and skinny and his nickname was stork. His bro committed suicide during the year and he was out for about a week. I felt super bad for him obviously but we never talked about it. There were a few times his frat dropped him off drunk/passed out and I had to carry him up 4 flights of stairs.

Update:
Family posted a imauselessmillennial page today. Claims that she "accidentally fell". She left a note. And got a running start. You don't land 20ft horizontally from the balcony if you "fell". Next they'll claim deceleration trauma. Or cement poisoning. Also: "We got $157,000 in donations to help pay medical expenses! " Hospital: (laughing) Come back when you can actually pay the full bill. And we'll go ahead and take the $157k as a deposit. Last edited by f4phantomii; 05-11-2021 at 10:09 PM. |

Can confirm. School couldn't care less.
Apartment leasing office could care less, and did. "No, we're not letting you out of the last month of the lease. And sorry we stuck you with someone who has caused so many problems that you repeatedly requested she be moved before all this happened. For a $500 fee, we can move you to a different apartment with a new 12mo lease." |

I think it's safe to say that the school and apartment complex aren't understanding the gravity of this situation.

There may have been a time where these were unreasonable demands to be making, but that window has closed. Do what you have to do for your kids.

That's a bit of a leap to assume that's what I meant.

Telling folks to stop using puns in this forum is suicide.

Update:
Just got to the apartment to move my kid out. Other two roommates already moved out, and the one who jumped is still in the hospital, probably for at least another month. Walked in and whole 4-bedroom apartment is hazed like a Cheech & Chong movie. Someone my kid doesn't know was sitting on the sofa all toked up. When we walked in, they ran past us out the door. No idea how they got in. |
