Default Camshaft too close to valves

So I'm rebuilding my engine ATM.

When taking valve lash measurements I realized many of my valves would require a bucket shim that is even smaller than a 438 (The smallest Subaru makes) One of my cams is even touching the buckets.

After talking to a mechanic buddy, he said it's likely that the cam journal has just been worn down due to use (They have almost 200k on them) and that I'd probably just need new cams.

He also said it was possible the valve seats and cam journals had been machined too far on the heads and I would need new heads which would suck.

I was thinking it may be possible to buy just the cam that is touching the buckets, and then use a drill press to file down the other buckets that are too close but not touching on the other cams. But my guess is that wouldn't be safe, so I probably won't.

What's the best solution for this? Buying all new cams? Taking it to a machine shop and seeing if they can cut the valve stems to size?

Thanks for any help.

i think the easiest solution would be to have a shop cut the valves down to size

I had my machine shop install a new set of Manley valves for me and they were able to use my existing buckets. Not sure if this can be expected from every shop or if it was the skill of the machinist. This particular machinist specialized in Subaru heads. If your shops don't give you a warm fuzzy you may have to ship them to someone that does. Lastly, you may want to have new valves installed. The exhaust valves really take a beating.

If the seats were cut and the valve faces ground the valves will "recede" into the head further when fully seated. You may be able to remove some material from the tip with a proper grinding tool (to keep the ground surface square) though you need to be careful about going too far into the hardening there.

You should check the installed height of the retainer to see if the valves are sitting too high in the heads now. If they are, you may need to shim the spring and grind the tips to open the gap a bit. Or get new valves and/or seats in the hope of more properly correcting it.
