Multiple exposures won't work. It just gets too dark that you need to add your own lighting.
That shot looks like a set of wheels and some street lights. Needs to be painted!

What types of lights do you guys recommend to paint with? Just a flashlight? It was a 3 sec exposure if I remember correctly so there isn't a ton of time. I could do a longer exposure but wanted it to be at F8 minimum

I use a Westcott Ice Light. However, I blend multiple shots into one so your exposure time on the car isn't always the same as your background/foreground. I don't recommend a flashlight. The problem with LED flashlights and cell phone lights is the color temperature of the light and quality of light itself. |

I have a Canon tripod on the way today, nothing super fancy. But I'm excited to try it out.
I'm going to take about 9000 steps backwards to avoid the tight crops and rethink my post processing methods. 20150906-IMG_0068 by Tyler McGowan, on Flickr |

The DSLR Camera/Car Combo Thread: Part 2
Thanks! I will check that out. I haven't had much time to take shots or edit with a new baby at home, but I will definitely look into that offer and a subscription. Here is an example of a shot I took with my car underexposed.

Here's a brenizer from earlier this summer. Kind of a tight shot and boring angle, but I like the dof.

Still messing around. Used a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 and Lightroom 5.
29mm 1/60sec f2.8 Please critique so that I can improve. |

^ I'm a fan of the processing. I like the subtle earth tone vibe. It plays well with the silver car.
I think your overall composition could be a little better. It's just very plain Jane. It's very tight, try to give a little more room. I would also say to zoom in more but step further back to compress the background more. Do you have a CP filter? It would help with some of those reflections. I also can't tell if this is completely in focus or not. |

Thanks! Yea, the photo is plain. LOL! I took it in my cousin's driveway this morning while taking the kids to school.
I do have a CP filter but took it off. With the shade, my photos were coming out very dark. Any suggestions for this? Also, maybe the photo isn't fully in focus, I am getting that too. Could it be shooting at a low f stop? Maybe raise the f stop and scoot back and zoom in instead? Thanks again for advice! |

Shoot at 50mm at f/2.8-f/4. If your shot is coming up too dark that means you need to let in more light. Slow your shutter down.
Are you shooting in manual? Are you using a tripod? Be sure to use the CP filter when shooting cars. |

I used to have that lens. I loved it, it was the perfect lens for a crop body.

Gracias, will try that next time. This time was with no tripod. I am shooting in manual mode. Trying to keep it in manual so that I can learn.

This is my favorite thing I've seen today.
Also, recent favorite. Probably could have done with a bit higher f-stop but I like the way it came out overall. first meet-20 by Tyler Daniels 4, on Flickr Last edited by tylerd4213; 09-09-2015 at 11:21 PM. |
