News Subaru Of America, Inc. Reports August Sales (2020)

Subaru Of America, Inc. Reports August Sales As Best Month Of 2020
  • Best month of 2020 for Outback and Ascent
  • Fourth consecutive month of 50,000+ vehicle sales

Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 57,885 vehicle sales for August 2020, a 17 percent decrease compared with record August 2019. These results reflect the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding economic recovery. Following eleven consecutive years of sales records, Subaru reported year-to-date sales of 376,457, a 21 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2019.

August marked the fourth consecutive month of 50,000+ vehicle sales for the automaker. As the top performing carline by volume, Forester sales increased 1 percent in August 2020 compared with the same month a year ago. BRZ posted a nearly 69 percent increase compared to August 2019.

“Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our retailer network, we are able to count August as the best sales month of 2020,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “Our retailers are continuing to sell at very high levels of sales efficiency given their on-ground inventory levels while at the same time providing a Love Promise customer experience. We are grateful for their outstanding efforts.”

“The Forester was again a standout this month, helping us maintain market share in August,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “We expect improving inventory and the arrival of 2021 models at our retailers will further improve our sales results in September and the fourth quarter.”

I think so much of this is inventory dependent. My local dealer had a ton of foresters recently and nothing else. Now they have nothing but outbacks.

People saw the BRZ and 86 renders and scooped up the current gen while they could.

A friend and I are discussing the new 86 repeatedly. He seems to think the power/tq won't be much different to the current model yet they are show benchmarking the car with a Mustang 2.3L DIT. Do you think it's going to be the 2.4L NA, or are they going to throw a small snail in it?

Hoping for a turbo mill but, looking at numbers, Mustang Ecoboost curb weight is 3530 to 3640 lbs for 310 hp. That's between 11.38 and 11.74 lb/hp.
GT86 curb weight is around 2780 lbs and that's the best case scenario.
So, to match Mustang EB power-to-weight ratio, GT86 would need at least 236 hp.
I don't think Subaru/Toyota will be able to get 236 hp out of the 2.4L without forced induction.
But, since GT86 is lighter and can potentially carry more corner speed than Mustang, Subaru/Toyota will let the 2.4L sit at around 220-hp with no turbo and they'll call it good enough.

Didn't the last gen Twins bench against a Cayman? I'm not sure why a Mustang this time... I'm all-in on the FA24 NA motor being the sole motor introduced at launch. Could a mid-to-high-$30k turbo BRZ/86 show up later? Shirley.

He is pretty concerned with that happening. He just sold his Mustang GT for more than he paid for it to Carvana in prep for the new 86. He says if they later produce a DIT, he would be irate. We keep trying to hash out, what HP it is going to produce in NA 2.4L trim. You'd think they'd want to bump up to 240-250 HP but without a snail it's highly unlikely.

With soo much complaining about how you could spend the same money on a better performing Mustang, this is my guess as to why it's now the benchmark.

Good question. Was Forester production ever shut down due to Covid? How long was Lafayette closed and what rates are they running now?

Both factories shut down. Forester has been way up in sales long enough they probably had a good stock of them to send over. Inventory levels have been increasing; but, it's still going to be awhile before they can get back to "normal".
