The problem with changeing Big Brake Kit in the front and leaving the stock
I'm thinking of installing a Stop tech 355 x 32 mm Big Brake Kit. The problem that concern me is that changeing Big Brake Kit in the front and leaving the stock back is that the brake bias changes too much forward. I'm making a big change in braking force in the front. so that mean front brake force would be a lot grater than the rear? Anyone know how to solve this problem?
thank chai

Talk to Stoptech. They typically engineer their front BBKs to keep the brake balance the same with stock rear brakes.

Stoptech designs their front BBKs to match the stock rear brakes (they decrease front bias). Give them a call if you're worried.

In order to match their front stoptech's to the stock rears without changing the brake proportioning system, they would have to ensure that for a given amount of line pressure, the pressure put on the brake pads by the calipers would be similar to the stock brakes...
which means... aside from the improvement over standard sliding calipers, what improvement would this upgrade have over say, the scooby 4 pots ? The only thing I can think of is, fade resistance, but I would think the caliper has less of an impact than say, good brake pads... ?!?!? |

Not necessarily. Stock brakes as well as aftermarket brakes are already front biased. Since so little braking is done in the rears, you can have the brakes in the front much stronger. I had Stoptech front BBK kit with factory rears, and it felt fine. I've tried 4-pot WRX brakes, and there's no comparison. In fact, I'd say the Stoptech front BBK with factory rears brakes better than STI's with factory Brembo's front and rear. Look at both WRX and STI factory brakes. The front set is always larger than the rear. When Stoptech makes their front kit, sure it makes it more front biased, but research shows the car still stops much better and still has good control. I did improve my rear, and all it did was make the car not nose dive as much. I added the H6 rotor upgrade, added better pads to the rear, and added SS lines. The car doesn't feel to stop any better, but it stays slightly more balanced. Not enough to be worth it, but I hate looking at the little rear rotors. |

Chai, you're right. As that brake bias chart on Stoptech's site shows, the 355mm fronts are more front biased (same caliper + larger rotor). They don't seem to think it's a problem. In general, ABS on modern cars allows too much front bias will few ill effects. But you should look at rear upgrades to go with the big fronts. Why the huge kit? The 332x32 wouldn't be adequate? Or do you just want the pie plate look? Last edited by Jon Bogert; 03-19-2006 at 10:39 PM. |
