I'm thinking since I have the car apart.... maybe I should just pull the motor out, swap in some cp pistons, pauter rods, acl race bearings and not worry about reliability down the road. I know the engine right is now fine... leakdown, compression, oil analysis was perfect. Or maybe I'll just drive it till it blows for now and just get a new motor down the road.

All the parts will be around $1500US.... now for the labour... any reputable engine shops I can get a quote from? My friends take their honda motors here: http://www.alecsautomotive.com/ and they seem to do good work... not sure about the subaru motors though.

I'm also in the process of rebuilding my short block. If you find a shop who will quote to do the labour send me a PM.

Thanks

What did you want done? Just drop in pistons or fully forged internals, etc...

Ya I will be doing forged rods/pistons & bearings. I'm still researching exactly what combination to go with but I've committed to doing it right the first time and build the shortblock up.

I'll probably have the engine on the stand by the end of the day today.

This is their response.

Hi Arthur,
yes we are familar with subaru engines, however we only perform the machine work and would not be able to assemble the short block. The assembly process is fussy and time consuming so the boss doesn't like to get involved with it. Honing the block will run you $45, balancing $215 for the complete rotating assembly, decking both halves of the block $115. I assume the heads are just going back on, but if you drop them off with the block i can check the surfaces and wash them at no charge. We are actually building a 2.0 subaru into a 2.5 using STI internals and a large overbore right now for another customer of ours as we speak. I hope I answered your questions. Feel free to give me a call any time to go over any more details. Thanks.
Rob. 604-876-7111

Very weird..... anyone have a micrometer, piston filer, etc? Maybe I'll try to assemble it myself

http://www.cc-racing.com/

they build nice highend ****, had my LT1 rebuilt here, it's my buddies uncles shop, the do VERY nice work, experience with subie motors is questionable, but they do rebuild porsche motors, which is basically the same thing.

give them a call.

That's too bad.

Who do the guys at Rocket use, or do they do their own assembly?
I guess the other option is to buy a complete shortblock from one of the many vendors around, but it could be pricey.

if you keep an eye on ebay i've seen "king of parts" or whatever let them go for just over a grand...

EDIT: oh you're looking for a built block......yeah hypas right, ridiculously expensive....just bend over....when you hit 450+ whp it'll be worth it .have you thought about building the block yourself?

I'm planning to hit 400 but I want reliability on the track so that's why I want to build the motor. I've though about building it myself... I've read a lot as to what's needed. I personally think I can do it but if I get the clearances off or something and the motor goes it's kind of a waste of parts .

yeah....400whp is pushing it a little bit on the stock block....
rebuilding the block really isn't too bad....

http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71639

that thread is incredible....i'll be rebuilding one of my dead blocks in a few months, you can come hang out when i assemble it if you want to see it in action, i'm by no means a pro, but i've rebuilt 2 blocks so far, with some success.....i dont know when you plan on building, but at least then u can see what all is involved....i'm hoping i can find someone with more experiance that's willing to come out as well and lend a hand for a bit more confidence....will pay with beer and pizza..

did this with my first block in AR, probably the single best learning experience ever having an older guy in the Subie community just hang out and give some pointers.....seems like a lot of people are uncomfortable with internal work, so maybe having a bunch of people come out, build a block, bbq and drink some beer....sounds like a hell of a meet to me

Or do like others have done, pick up a spare block and build that. Most of the hard parts need to be replaced anyway, like bearings, rods and pistons. A block casing isn't that much more compared to what you're spending anyway. Plus, you can still drive the car.

Added bonus, sell off the stock short or longblock once you're confident the new motor is solid.

Meh, it's a learning experience.
I blew up my first Honda block back in the day, and learned a lot from it's destruction. Failing is educational when you think of it.

Carbon driveshafts are actually made from stealth technology and are very strong. After installing it, I don't get caught by radar anymore, plus everytime I redline, things go all dizzy like the naws scene in fast and furious part 1. It's much harder to damage too, because it's made from the carbonest fiber in the world. I think it's from Brazil, where the Incas invented carbon fiber 684 years ago.

I couldn't resist.

Really though, I've been running the cf for almost a year now, and it's a wonderful driving mod. It's not that I installed it and noticed instant change. It wasn't until I removed the shaft and attempted to return it to it's owner (I was borrowing it at the time ) that I fell in love. I lasted about 4 blocks with the stock shaft back in before I turned around, went home, and reinstalled the cf piece. Then I had to explain to Jay that he was getting the shaft, by not getting his shaft back...

Feel is where this mod shines. Downshifting is silky, almost like shifting a finely tuned Honda tranny. Accerelation is more abrupt, but most of all the mild lag when you hit the throttle is gone. Once I went back to the stock DS, I could actually feel it flexing when I launched or shifted hard. It was flacid in comparison, not a good feel for such a fun car.

Not to mention it's a 45 minute install, and can easily be resold in the classifieds for at least 70% of what you paid. It's definately a worthwhile mod, as long as you know what to expect.

^^ ....well im sold...

add to mod list: CF driveshaft....

i'll probably do it same time i upgrade the transmission....which should be pretty soon cause i drove the car last night and it feels like it's pulling harder at 7lbs then it did before at 19lbs (18G)

never knew ported heads, os valves, and cams could make such a difference....lol

So, CC racing got back to me.

Hi Arthur, I have never done a Subaru short block assembly but I have honed these blocksand they are a fairly simple short. We love new and different projects here! The only word of caution is we will need to check the bores and piston dia. to make sure the piston to wall clearance will not be excessive with the std. bore piston. A forged piston will have more clearance and will tolerate a little extra clearance and if the block has only 14,000 km., it shouldn't be a problem. The other issue will be the align bore. The studs will have to be installed and the block halves torqued up to determine if the new fasteners distort the case.If it affects the align bore, we will have to address this. As far as labour pricing goes:Hone 4 cylinders-$88.00Resurface decks-$150.00Polish crankshaft-$85.00Balance assembly-$250.00Hang rods-$52.00Assemble block halves with ARP fasteners and check align bore-$85.00 (one hourshop time)Assemble short block-$250.00 If you would like to discuss any of this with me call me at 604-270-6588. Thanks, Terry Bride C.C. Racing

A bit more pricey with the machine work but they seem to know what they are doing better.
