Default Brainiac Build Thread by Workshop 12

Hi Everyone,

After posting our Brainiac Introduction Forum Post I figured we would open up a Build Thread so that everyone can follow along with the build process as we continue to move closer to having the product available.

Please feel free to ask questions and provide any feedback. We're always interested in how we can make the product better.

Our first introduction blog post is a good place to get started that explains the different functions of Brainiac and why we're bringing this product to market.

Because of my history with Subaru vehicles we announced that the first two vehicles to receive a custom 10.1" touch screen installation kit would be the 05-07 WRX/STI with automatic climate control and the 12-15 BRZ/FR-S

http://workshoptwelve.com/2015/06/17...ens-announced/

That kicked the process off with some initial sketches of what the large screen trim could possibly look like.

To get everything to fit as perfectly as possible we started the process of 3D scanning the dashboard that gets us down to accuracies less than the width of a human hair.

We posted up a video interview describing the process with some footage of the 05-07 WRX/STI dashboard being scanned.

Next we moved onto some 3D resurfacing and modeling of the new dash trim pieces. This process brings the initial artistic sketches into 3D space where we can get a better feel for the shape and proportions matching that of the actual dashboard.

Next update we'll be showing some more of the 3D printing process to test fit the plastic pieces in the dashboard.

In order for you to get a better feel of what Brainiac will be like in your car we've made an emulator available for download on your Mac or PC.

This allows you to check out Brainiac in 10.1" and 7" views. The 10.1" portrait view is what will be fitting in the 05-07 WRX/STI and 12-15 BRZ/FR-S

The Emulator automatically updates itself whenever we have new software available so it will always be up to date

Here's a quick test print of the Brainiac logo as we were dialing in the settings on the 3D printer to give us some nice accurate prints.

Plastic 3D prints allow us to revise the 3D model quickly and check how everything fits as we continue to adjust the design.

The 3D printer was whirling away yesterday and again today. We should be able to post some pictures of the actual first revision of plastic pieces soon

So I kind of cheat with my car. I have an 02 Bugeye with the 05 TR center console swap. I didn't do the automatic climate control swap on my Bugeye but I really don't have any climate control at all.

I ripped out the AC from my car so I really only ever have my car on one setting. No heat, pointed at the defrost on the windshield so I'm actually installing Brainiac and using our accessory capability to control the fan speed. Which is usually off.

That way I get the full 10.1" install, but I made some sacrifices along the way

I should clarify.

The 10.1" will work well in the FR-S. The pre-requisite for the 10.1" display is electronic climate control. Meaning works using wires plugged into the back of the climate control unit instead of rods, cables, vacuum switches.

So in your case, you would actually gain automatic climate control by installing Brainiac

Very cool! Excited since I have an 05 WRX that will one day be turned into an 818. Looking at used BRZs also. Will there be support for both Apple and Android? Will there be full functionality when the phone is plugged in via usb, or will you have to have Bluetooth/wifi hotspot enabled also? Can't wait to see how this turns out!

Wow.
Just wow.

Going to re-post this at FT86club.com forums (the big FR-S/BRZ forum). If I understand you correctly, this is going to be huge. Thanks!

Brainiac will support phones that allow for Bluetooth and/or USB integration. We also have a smartphone app for Apple and Android that will bring more of your phone into your car and vica-versa.

You can decide if you want to pair via Bluetooth, Wifi or direct USB connection to charge your phone while you're driving. When paired it gives Brainiac access to the web. You can also connect a Cellular USB modem into the back of Brainiac to have it always connected.

We just posted up an update to the Brainiac Emulator so that you can now personalize your colors and a new "switches" app.

The switches app can be configured to run lots of your accessory systems by providing 8 programmable relays.

Details about the updates can be found on the blog:

Glad to hear it! The 86 platform is terrific for modding and has a huge aftermarket in just 3 yrs. Still not nearly enough in terms of A/V. There have been a few owners working on upgrading the factory manual HVAC controls on FR-S. A few have pulled off some interesting cosmetic mods (like below). Still I don't think anything as elegant as what you're developing has seen fruition. So once this spreads around there should be plenty of interest.

HVAC single manual to single digital here:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41584

Yet another tablet mod here:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50922

If you need a tester, or someone for early impressions I've done that for what I consider to be some pretty interesting projects (Phantom ESC, Rooducts Powered Brake coolers, etc.) PM if needed, but really thanks for the R&D on such an interesting product.

Those are some interesting projects. I've done many similar mods for my cars where I pull together a lot of off the shelf parts for a one off solution.

Our hopes with Brainac is to create a system that is both plug-and-play and also expandable for those who want to modify the system.

That way we get the best of both worlds, a great factory looking install with the ability to expand and modify

We'll keep you in mind when we start doing some early FRS/BRZ installations.

I'm really excited about the idea of an upgradeable and/or modular AV system. The time has really come for something like this on these platforms. Yes please, keep us updated (on both boards) and keep me in mind for the manual control (FR-S) integration. My Systems Analysis / Business Intelligence background makes QA/QUA/UAT and data gathering process comfortable and familiar.
