^^^for changing from 06 wrx 5mt------>06 sti 6mt, you will need the 6mt slave cylinder and clutch fork. master cylinder does not need to be swapped out.

That would be impossible. The 6 speed is not even loosely based off of the 5 speed. The 6 speed is actually based off of a Porsche transmission. From what I have read Porsche and Subaru got together to design the new STi 6 speed. Every aspect of the transmission is different aside from a few seals and such, but they have more to do with the diffs anyways. Plus if it was even possible you are taking away one of, if not the most important, thing that makes the 6 speed stronger, the case. The main part of the 6 speed case almost looks like a pipe, with reinforcement ribbing on the sides, and iron plates on the ends that house the bearings supporting the gear set.

The idea that the 5 speed case flexes is speculation. There is some convincing evidence around that it is not technically possible for the case to flex enough for the gears to break. Just throwing that out there Sorry no links, but I think the tranny FAQ shpould have that info.

But ya, why the hell would you go through the trouble of getting 6 speed gears, just to throw them in a 5 speed case?

All I have ever heard and that makes sense is that the 5speed case flexes. if you look at it, its believable especially comparing it to the 6speed. The 5 speed was originally designed in the 70's for 100hp cars and thats why they break so easily because its a ****ty design. you would definitely have to show me some really good proof that the 5speed case doesnt flex because that would take a lot for me to believe. Because I have never heard that claim before and do not believe its true it is not going in the tranny FAQ. not to mention this isnt the right FAQ page for that info anyway

Case flexes. <shakes head>

LGT 5spd (non-RA STI really) does not break easily. The difference is in the gears - much stronger than WRX gears. I guess the gears are so strong, that they can withstand the flexing case

well the reason i was asking was more for the point that i was not sure of the size comparison of the 6 speed gears vs the 5 speed gears, in other words are the gears ridiculously bigger or is it basically the case thats giving it the ability to hold power? i love the 4.44 ratio on my sti and i am dead set against getting a 6 speed jdm box to swap into my 5 speed jdm ver 6 the 3.9 just doesn't seem as fun to drive my brothers spec c just doesn't seem to feel as good.

Im in the process of doing my 6spd swap into my 05 Wrx and I thought I would be able to use my axles with the Sti 6spd., no? When I received the 6spd I noticed that it had stubs sticking out and my wrx tranny had none..I thought I read above that the wrx axles could be used with the 6spd so am I missing something? Its a 04 sti tranny using a aluminum driveshaft and 3.90 R160..Im confused do I need Sti axles, hubs and knuckles to make this work?

you can resuse your axles because they are female ended. the stubs that stick out of the tranny slide right into your axles and are held in by a pin. you got the easy way out. no need to replace seals or anything, just slide the pin in after the axle is in. just make sure that driveshaft fits, not sure which one you are using, probably custom.

just like the above poster said, just slide the tranny right into your existing axles. for me i had to buy stubs and circlips to make my 2005 STi 6spd (also a female end) fit onto my front axles. 2004 6spd has stubs already sticking outta it.

for your driveshaft if it fits between the 6spd and 3.90 R160 it's most likely customized, or off of an automatic subaru. for example i'm running an automatic Forrester driveshaft on mine - 05 6spd mated to a 3.90 R160.

if you want to use STi axles you need to get STi hubs/brakes/etc., or you could modify the end points of the axle to fit your WRX hubs. but your main issue is i dont think the STi axles would fit on the R160, and I'm also not sure if your current WRX axles would fit on the R160, but if it would then everything will bolt right on - just reuse your axles/hubs/brakes etc

wrxwagon253-

These other 2 guys dont fully understand your situation. Since you have an 05 wrx you have male axles. With male axles you do not need the stubs and pins. You need to take the stubs out of the 6spd, and then your axles will pop right in. The only way i really know how to do that is to slide a screwdriver through the pin hole of the stub and use a pry bar or two on the screwdriver. Then the axles seals (in the tranny) will not work. You have to get the smaller inside diameter axle seals for your male axles...thats really easy to change and not a big deal. Check out the link in my OP.

So no you do not need the sti axles, hubs and knuckles to make it work. the sti front axles will work too but theres not too much point to having them (just the shaft is stronger).

If you are confused about anything else let me know.

the sti axles will not fit in the rear due to the r180. and your wrx axles would not work on the r180 ( i think that is what you were trying to say above). you can use sti axles up front as long as they are from an 04' sti because of the outside connection with the hub is the same, unlike 05-08 sti's. DSS used to make conversion axles for the r180 to be used with their axles on a wrx, but they were discontinued.

There is more of a difference with the sti axles than the shaft being stronger. I would highly recommend using sti axles up front. I tried using my wrx axles with the 6 speed and while it did work, my tranny leaked and my cv joints were being flexed to much because the axles are the wrong size! Like said before, if you use sti axles up front there is no need to buy front sti hubs, all you need is the axles themselves and they will fit in just fine.

The 04 sti axles only have stronger shafts...there is a big difference with 05+ sti axles. Your tranny leaked fluid because u didnt have the correct seals for your wrx axles. And there isnt a length difference. ONLY 04 sti axles will work in the front of a wrx. this has become way too vague and is very misleading.

correct! you leaked because you did not have the correct axle seals. i dont think it has become that misleading. it shouldnt be that hard to understand that 05+ axles use a different hub then 04 sti and ALL wrx's. this is documented in the choice of wheels and struts between wrx's/04 sti and 05-08 sti's. if one can not figure that out, they need not be swapping trannies.

one question that i do have though. if one were using 06 axles/ male ended, and a stubbed 04 6mt, could i simply swap out the inner cv boot for an 02-05 female ended inner cv boot? i do not want to take the stub out of the tranny and do not want to mess with replacing the WHOLE axle. just wondering if this was possible.

Well just switching the cv boot doesnt do anything but i guess you could switch the whole inside side of the cv to get the female instead of male. I definitely wouldnt do that though even if it is possible. Why don't you want to take out the stubs? The male axles are "better", they switched to them for a reason. I really dont think its that big of a deal to take the stub out and it would be the easiest way in the end.

No, I had the correct seals and I've compared the 04 sti and 06 wrx axles side by side. The stubs that slide into the tranny are a lot different themselves, I should have taken pictures. But I'm just posting my experience, anyone can take it or leave it.

youre right the stubs should be very different because they are! 04 sti axles are female which uses a stub and 06 wrx axles are male which dont use a stub. and the male wrx axles are smaller in diameter which makes a smaller inside diameter axle seal is needed. So you would've needed to change the axles seals at some point. theres only 2 seals, one that is meant for female axles (larger inside diameter) and one that is meant for male axles (smaller inside diameter). obviously you used your male wrx axles at first and you had a leaking problem and then you put in the female 04sti axles and stubs and that solved the leaking problem. That proves that you had the female axle seals in your tranny which are the wrong ones for male axles hence the leaking problem.

Obviously your misunderstanding me. The 04 sti axles that I have are out of a late model 04 sti after they switched to the male axles. When looking at both sets of male axles there was still a very noticeable difference between the part that inserts into the trans. When I used my wrx axles they did not clip in correctly and I would actually be able to slide one of them in and out of the tranny (yes I did have the proper circlips).

Finally advice that I feel confident taking..Thanks a ton..
Btw is it worth me trying to pull out the stubs myself or would it be better to take it to a tranny shop?

i think i got mixed up but you understood what i was saying. and with removing the stub from the tranny, i have read in numerous places where people have had problems with taking the stubs out of the tranny and the retainer position being all fubared. is it really that easy just to pop out the stubs and insert the new correct seals and axles?

the easiest thing to do is to take the stubs out with female axles but since you dont have those i think the next best thing is to put a screwdriver through the pin hole of the stub and use a prybar on that. i used a prybar on my male axles to get them out of my tranny and i have had the experience of changing out axle seals and i have installed stubs with no problems, but i have not had to remove a stub. I have heard that it isnt easy but i dont see why it would be that much harder or any different from taking out a male axle...they both have the same circlips. I can only wish you the best of luck...i personally wouldnt find it necessary to take it to a shop especially if your installing the tranny yourself, but whatever makes you comfortable. Let me know how it goes
