Wow, stoked to have found this forum.... About 2 months ago, replaced my '90 Legacy sedan with an 08 2.5i 5dr in the canadian "sport" package (alum. wheels, ground effects, heated seats, rear discs, fog lights, upgraded audio, and traction control added). Basically, I couldn't be more happy with it, put on 8 000 mi already! Main thing I'd like to talk about would be that new ETC... mine definitely has a noticeable "rev-hold" during upshifts. I noticed this from the initial test drive, and my buddy who is a tech at the dealership says the best he can recommend is wait for a re-key of the engine computer to come out.... so anybody else finding this to be annoying, bring it to the attention of your dealer... maybe they'll get on it? I know that for drifting around in the snow in BC, when I lift off the gas, I want OFF the gas!

So how is the road/wind noise while on the highway? My 07 is pretty noisy but I heard they made an improvement on that. How is the ride? I'm a little dissapointed with my 07, pretty rough ride. Cool lookin ride though, thanks for posting.

My 08 5 door is actually quite good on the highway. Not much noise and the ride is quite smooth. Wind noise is noticeable past 120km/h but it's not loud at all.

Very nice color! White subie is the best, make sure you get sports grille, it looks awesome on white ones.
Here is my ride. Trade in my Celica GT-S for this one. Love it so far.

Love the Satin White Pearl...Love my 08 2.5i!!!! They even look good in Christams costumes:

As for wind noise...I have the roof rack system and it is noisy..Subaru is aware of it and says not to keep it on unless you are using it.( It uses the same system as the Tribeca and comes off in less then 3 minutes)
I think I am going to get the sports grill after the Holidays .. I just got a discount cert for 10% off all accessories and installation

They seem to be cutting down the road noise alot...still getting some but I no longer feel like the bottom of the car is getting beat up..I think the front ones could be alittle longer ..But so far very happy with them.

Its finally snowing here and my first impression....I wish there wouldnt have been some slow ass in a Honda Fit in front of me..i wanted to play...But she sure felt sure footed...Will go out playing later

06 2.5i owner here has a question for you guys.. how is the throttle response on the 08s? If you're in neutral and jam the pedal to the floor and lift off as fast as possible, do the rpms go up or does the engine just burble a little?

Thats what my 06 has always done "burble", just curious if they improved this. As for the rpms holding when shifting, my 06 has always done that on the 1st to 2nd shift especially. I've gotten used to these little quirks and don't even notice them anymore really.

That white hatch looks sweet, get that sport grill on there asap!

moestock: I'm stile breaking it in, but so far it has really steady acceleration. No so-called "burbles", but that's with smooth acceleration.

*thoughts: in my opinion, sports grille really improves looks of Impreza. It's painted in body color so headlights are separated from the grill. Personally I dislike continuous appearance of the standard impreza front(left light->gray grille->right light). I like headlights to be accented and grille as simple as possible(here goes sports grille).

in my 08 2.5i mt, it seems like when you let off the throttle, the car doesn't start to decelerate for a second or so. I can also feel a subtle change in the engine after that second.

Has anyone else noticed this? It annoys me.

Seems sorta similar to the Honda Civic which does something similar to achieve lower emissions.

coming from a 3.0r, nobody would be happy.

the 3.0r was almost perfect for me except the shocks and the gas mileage

i probably should have kept it and used regular gas.

i also tried megan coilovers on it but with no success.

the 08 outback sports is ok for younger buyers but, not me.

its good on the highway and rides well over potholes, manhole covers and railroad tracks. for me, being in a suburban environment, a decent ride is a must. it corners very well with the stock tires and three in the car. it looks fine from the the outside except for the "altezza" tail lights. i do happen to like the 4 speed tranny for city driving. the transmission keeps the car steady with the flow of traffic instead of up-shifting and moving the car faster than the other cars around me as in the 5 speed. sound out of the radio w/sub-woofer is pretty darn good other than that the impreza has gone "cheap" just like everything else in it's class.

they took out the sound insulation. every time it rains you here ...tink ....tink...tink.tink.tink as the raindrops hit. at high rpm's the engine can be heard straining and wheezing for it's dear life. the interior panels use to be "soft touch" which set it above the rest of the competition. now it's "cheap" hard plastic. they took out the rear lsd and added vdc to what effect? start forward on the snow and the whole ass end flings around. gas mileage is not that much better than the 3.0r. i would have preferred an impreza hybrid but they, like always, lack the foresight to bring it to market. now what do we get in the future? friggen diesel. keep it. i'll wait for the next generation prius.

all in all it's was my choice. it was the wrong choice for me and will probably be a great choice for others.

it's just that this time......... i choose..............poorly

That is so stupid, take it off when not in use, how gay. Just wait till you have two snowboards on there and you cruising at 75 on the freeway. Oh my god, its so loud. Piece of chit.

You want to talk about a noisey car..see whats sitting beside my Imp??? Thats my 88 XT6..between the wind noise from the frameless windows...the engine noise from the ER27( and it has a new SOA crate motor under the hood)..trim rattling..tranny and diff noises...lucky it has a loud stereo in it.
The Imps are " cheap" cars...look on the market..cheapest AWD car...if y'all want quiet luxury..spend the money and go with a legacy.

As for the guy who truely hates his...if you hate it that much..get rid of it..dont bash it so much to other owners/potential owners. So its not the car for you..maybe you should have done your research more before you bought it..or spent alittle more time with the test drive. I looked at these for months and test drove it 3 times before I desided to buy it..and I was looking also at on 07 and a used 05..I liked this better. I couldnt be happier with my 08. Who cares about alittle wind noise...its not a luxury car..Maybe cause of my age and the fact I have owned well over 30+ cars all makes and models( 9 of which have been Subarus)...I have a more opened mind

I've had 12 cars in my life so far. most hang around on average ..3 years (except 3)

i test drove a civic, lancer, prius hybrid, camry hybrid, corolla, 2.5 legacy, and a 3.0r.

unfortunately i should have tried a mazda 3 but other considerations like free loaner cars and a dealership that "helps me out" along with it being close to home; are thrown into the mix.

i also took the 08 outback sport out twice.

this one seemed to the best of the one in it's class but, not by much.

this one is on a 2 year lease so i'm "stuck" with it.

and don't presume you have a more open mind than anybody else when you don't know the full situation

also re-read what i posted. i have the good, the bad, the ugly, and the reality

I respect Whoosh's rant and review of the Subaru 08' cause later on tonight, I'm going to the dealer to buy the car finally. And it definitely give me an insight of what is in stored for me. It's great to hear some people with negative feedback so that I know the good and bad of the car.

This is my first purchase of a Subaru and hopefully it won't be my last for the future to come. It appears with the news of Subaru and how they are the first car manufacturer to do 99% of recycling is remarkable. I have full faith of purchasing a Subaru and hopefully I've made the right decision.

Again, thanks.

Hmmmm, my wife just bought a 2008 2.5i w/Premium Package AT in Silver. She traded in her 2007 2.5i AT.
Me, I own a 1997 Maxima with a 2004 3.5 motor in it (about 270chp and almost 28 MPG hwy 25+ city) So I can see the glaring differences between a "luxury type" car with a V6 and a base model car with a 4cyl. Here's my take:

I love driving my wife's car to and from work. Great stock stereo, LIGHTED controls on the steering wheel. Nice.

I love the look of her 5 door in silver, it looks much better than I could imagine.

The seats are fine.

It rains a lot here (WA State) and I find the sound insulation to be just fine. I don't hear the rain drops usually.

The lighting (headlights and fogs) is strong.

Road manners, excellent. Not as tight as the 2007, but pretty good nonetheless.

Wind Noise: Not bad. Seems average to better than average for price class.

Utility is great. No opinion here, it's not an SUV however.

Driver information center (MPG, temp, time) is a classy touch.

Appearance of interior in black is very nice. We waited a week to get the silver car because this interior in black is nicer than ivory to our eyes. The ivory is OK, but the swoopy dash and silver accents fit a black scheme better.

Our car has the 6CD, Gentex compass/Homelink mirror. Makes it feel much nicer.

HOWEVER:
The dash is hard plastic. Even my wife took offense. The 07 is padded vinyl. It LOOKS fine, but touch it and the honeymoon is over!

Door panels lack cloth inserts. All hard plastic except for armrests. hmmm, not very nice.

What happened to the water temp gauge? Without the temp gauge, the gauges look oh-so 1990 Corolla DX with red bulbs. My wife does not notice.

Seats are much lower, my wife is not happy about that. I am tall, but I notice it too.

the 2.5 motor needs either a 5AT or another 35 HP to deal with the old school 4EAT. This car is gutless. To drive around town is fine, it makes most of it's power down low and feels good until you need more. Then it feels asthmatic. Just like our old 07 2.5i.

Gas mileage, well not as good as my 270HP V6 maxima. Not even close. Our '07 2.5i only got about 23-24MPG. Not good enough for a 4cyl. Again, this car cries for more speeds in the AT.

All in all, a great car for my wife. And I like it too. keep in mind it is a bottom level car. For all it offers, it is still a great deal in my mind. AWD, great looks, nice stereo, above average performance in most ways compared to most cars in it's price range.

With AWD and VDC, 6 airbags I feel good about my wife driving this car. I'll keep my Maxima, but we feel the Impreza is perfect for my wife.

Dunno if I'm jacking this thread or not.....Looking at the 2.5i sport pkg (Canada)...and was browsing around dealership websites. Got sidetracked into the used cars section and started noticing that all the used imprezas are automatic. Is there a reason for this? or does this mean that people who buy standard just keep them or are able to resell them privately more easily?
I'm trying to decide whether to go standard or automatic. And no, I have not driven standard cars before, just my motorcycle for 7 years. Don't know how much I'll ruin the poor car before i work it out...

Thanks for any advice I can get!

I'm going to pick up my 08 gray metallic 4 door 2.5i later today. I live in a neighborhood on hills and I'm driving a 06 Civic right now and I'm unable to make it through the snow with it. I can't wait to get rid of this.

Whoosh, Made in China- great info for first time buyers to read before making the commitment. Reading this prior to getting mine, would of been great. I think I still would of ended up getting it, knowing what I was getting into. I have no issues beside the power, coming from a 04 SB Reg Cab Hemi. (didn't want to spend the extra on a WRX but like the MPG's allot better). And the loud a55 OEM roof rack set up. I like the feel, handling, the comfort, the stocker stereo sound great, the black interior, the on board computer, minimal wind noise, excellent head lights (although I don't think there are as good as my 00 Civic hatch) and the look of the DGM hatch.

Another plus (in my book) is my girl friends 87 year old grandma goes to dinner with us allot and she doesn't need help getting her seat belt buckled in the back seat like the other cars she rides in. The seat belt buckles are in a great spot for all passengers and easy to buckle. And the rear doors open nice and wide for the people who need to open them wide.
