Question Missing the bolts that hold a STI driveshaft together, what to do??

Hi all,
I did a fair bit of searching and didn't find much on the connecting bolts for the two piece 2006 STI Driveshaft. I got the driveshaft in seperated condition missing those joining bolts.

I got my hands on a 02-06 impreza parts manual but no where in there does it list driveshaft components. I also looked through the service manual for 06 sti and no where did they list or even show those bolts except for in a cross section detail drawing. The bolts are not mentioned anywhere else, I guess they weren't meant to be taken out.

Subaru Genuine Parts told me I can't order them, so what can I do? Can I just buy some bolts at Home Depot or the local hardware store? I'm worried they might not be strong enough and shear. Has anyone else ran into this problem?

Thanks in advance.

check your local driveshaft shop. the dealer can not order anything but the assembly. most driveshaft shops can and will rebuild the shaft- or get/supply/sell you the bolts

Go to Home Depot with your measurements from it. Buy about three bolts that you think will fit, one right size, one over, and one under. Go home and fit them to determine what size is best and write this down. Return the bolts (real men don't return anything FYI) or put them in your shop coffee can o' nuts and bolts and order real bolts from McMaster Carr. If you break out your local yellow pages you should have a local hardware store that specializes in nuts/bolts that will sell you Grade 10 or better bolts....high grade hardware is what you want to use. If you have a local shop, you could even bring in the driveshaft and do a running fit in the store and they could recommend and test fit on the spot. Bolts are bolts, but in this case I'd errr on the size of going too high.

The head of the bolts are 12mm which is import as they fit the profile of the driveshaft. They are M8x1.25 bolts that are about an inch long with matching nuts and lock washers.

Thanks so much guys for all the info. VERY HELPFUL. I very much appreciate it.

kleinkid, where'd you get that info? Do you have a service manual page that illustrates those bolts and their location?

the 12mm head is very important here....

Most mechanics shops that work on alot of Japanese stuff will have replacement bolts in their "tool rooms"

the dealer likely does also. you are looking for JIC standard bolts

OK, lets put an end to the misinformation!!

I hate to tell Tony that he is wrong, but he is. He is on the right track, but off a size.

Straight from my 2006 STi driveshaft sitting in my garage:

Bold Head: 14mm

Bolt: M10, 1.25 thread pitch

Length: 35mm, with plenty of room left over

Mine has regular (non-flanged) m10 1.25 nuts, and lock washers.

BUY GRADE 8 OR BETTER, FROM ANY LOCAL HARDWARE STORE. As Unabomber said, a bolt is a freaking bolt...with exception for grade of course

Bump from the dead....

I decided to replace my driveshaft bolts during a clutch swap since the ones I took off are starting to round a little.

aboothman is right...If you replace your driveshaft or disconnect the bolts and need to replace them, the bolts you need are M10x1.25x35mm JIS. I found a supplier online, as all the local bolt shops (Fastenal, Grainger, etc...) didn't carry the correct JIS bolts/nuts. The head on standard M10 bolts is 17mm, and the JIS is 14mm and just fits in the driveshaft union.

Here is a comparison of the bolt I removed from my driveshaft to one I picked up from a local autoparts store.

I did place an order with SGP using the part numbers in this thread, I will post the comparison to the stock nut/bolts and the nut/bolts I ordered from clipsandfasteners.com

***UPDATE***The previously listed part numbers were updated by Jamie at SGP for my 04 STi and have been ordered...

032008000 (M10x1.25 JIS Nut with 14mm Head)
021808006 (Washer)
901700144 (M10x1.25 JIS Bolt with 14mm low clearance head)

Ran into this same issue when I bought a used STI driveshaft and the seller forgot to include the hardware.

I think the previous post's part numbers are the hardware that connects the driveshaft to the rear diff and not the hardware mentioned in the original post.

I found the matching hardware at a local ACE hardware store. However, it was one of those "super" ACEs; it was well stocked in hardware, probably two to three times the size of the typical ACE.

JIS metric
M10x1.25
30mm length bolts
