Default Figuring Out a Swapped Engine

Going to look at a complete engine tomorrow - already pulled from the car.

Problem is it is advertised as a turbo’d 2.5 from a 2002 Impreza .....

If it is really a 2.0 that is easy to see on the engine case by the alternator.

What I really want to know - is how to tell if it was a full 255 or 257 swapped in? Or maybe a hybrid made with a 253 and the original 2.0 heads?

99% sure the seller won’t let me pull a head and see if it is an open deck or a semi-closed deck block.

First experience with Subaru. Son bought an 04 Forester with a replaced engine (supposed to be the “right” 255) with the “STi mods” and an open source stage 2 tune. Someone decided not to listen to reason and wait until we had a Tactrix cable in hand and a WBO2 installed and we could look at the tune and datalog some easy runs .... pretty sure it took out the ring lands on three cylinders.

This one is OBE now - guy also had the "correct" EJ255 from an 05 Forester XT.

Now just to figure out if it goes in stock as it sits or if it gets pistons, bearings, valve job, and new gaskets/seals first....

If it makes you feel better, I have no idea what that means and I've been a NASIOC member for 20 years.
