15+ Oil Cooler Locations?
So motor went at Laguna Seca a couple weekends back. Nothing catastrophic, but literally out of no where knock knock city and smoking upon start up getting ready for session 2.
Nonetheless, car's getting a new motor swapped in next month and has presented some opportunity to address cooling issues that we all experience on track in 90+ ambient days. Car currently has the Perrin/Setrab kit on it, which is mounted right in front of the AC condenser/rad stack. My plan and 'want' here is to relocate the oil cooler core to behind the fog light so that it's not bleeding hot air into the radiator. From my understanding oil temps and water temps are relevant to one another and managing oil can help or aid in managing water temps to an extent. The Perrin unit is a 9-row series 6 unit. I've recently picked up a Setrab series 6, 25-row core. It's 13" in length and 6-7" wide. Basically same length as the Perrin unit, but wider and I think a little thicker. Looking at the VA Chassis and the space we have to mount this big sucker, i'm not totally sure i can fit it behind the fog light. Full disclosure - i have not taken the bumper off to play around, but digging through google, it looks like it's going to be a tight fit. Question/Ask -
The other option is to just re-mount the thing in front of the AC condenser like the Perrin unit is now, using P2P Racing's brackets which they use for their kit, which also leverages the same Setrab Core. My only concern with that is now i have an even larger core bleeding hot air into the Rad/AC. However, there may be some benefit to it as they state that you will struggle getting the oil over 215 degrees, which if that's true, that may help with coolant temps. Pictures for attention and (1) of a 11-14 STI that fit the same cooler in the location i want to (Apples to Oranges, but..) With bumper removed -

If I recall Ryan Payne (P2P Racing) has his mounted on the front like you do in his track car. One thing you could do though is cut open your front bumper a bit. Perrin has the stencil if that helps. IMO this may help in both cases. I am going to run out to his shop this next week as I am local. I can pass it by him if you haven't already spoken to him.

I have the same Perrin kit, and also recently purchased a 25-row Setrab core. My plan is to mount it where the TMIC is and use+modify the smaller opening 15+ WRX hood scoop ducting. Another option for you if you have a FMIC.

I had a Perrin oil cooler in that same location. Depending on your routing of IC pipes, you may consider moving it over to the other side.
I got a bit better cooling by doing so. My IC hot pipe enters the IC where your cooler is currently mounted. |

I'm not too keen on keeping the core in the front stack as i'm trying to maximize airflow into the radiator and stick an even larger core in front i don't think will help my temp situation on track. Maybe once or if i ever remove the AC, but at this point i'm not there yet. |

I've also read that it's not the 'best' to have the cooler at the highest point in the oiling system, but i'm far from an expert. I would also be concerned with air turbulence with having a FMIC and then ALSO sending air into the engine bay via the hood scoop. The whole idea behind FMIC is getting as much air in through the nose and then OUT through the hood or fenders, etc. |
