Question Dealership, $170 Fuel Cleaning?

Hi All,

Today, while the car was in for 24 month service at the dealership, my wife was offered some sort of fuel cleaning treatment on her 2019 Forester for $170. Does anybody know what that is or have more information about it? It sounds really expensive and the car only has 22,000 miles and runs great so she said no. Has anybody here done that?

Thanks

Sounds like a lot of money for a $10 bottle of cleaner you can get anywhere. Just typical stealership stuff.

but a qualified tech will pour it in the tank! and they'll write details about it on the service report. thats the extra $160 in labor.

Before any "extra" stuff is done on said xx,xxx mile service, ask the service writer if it is in the service schedule/maintenance manual.

What you described above is a pure profit and needless maintenance item. My car recently went through its 24k mile service at 21k miles and my dealer mentioned nothing of the sort as far as "extra" bits or services.

Even if my car was due for a cleaning or other recommended item, that isn't crucial, I always decline and either tell them I already have a plan or I want to do more research.

Sorry you dealership is pushing services like this, especially toward your wife (or other female customers in general). As sincere as it sounds and keeping your vehicle is tip top shape is nice, it is needless services like this that really chap my hide.

It will be bad enough when it is time to do the back of the intake valve cleaning thanks to direct injection. We really don't need any of the "extra" stuff pushed by most service writers.

Hope you future experiences get better.

My dealership tried to change out my clear led turn signal bulbs for oem amber bulbs at an expense of $130. The car was there for the airbag recall. The places are a joke.

I never go to the dealer, but when I have to for certain things I tell them only to do what I came there for. If they find something I always say I will fix it myself. They once refused to do an inspection because of brakes, when it was in for a recall. I said I do them myself and they have another 3k on them for sure, but they refused. Never went back, except for recall and I let them do the AT tranny fluid on my BRZ because it's a pain.

BRZ auto tranny fluid? Isn't that a CVT with "lifetime" fluid? I know the procedure for changing which is quite a pain. There's a way around that, but it's still more work than a good old EAT.

Yeah it’s a slush box. With some temperature thing. For about 200 bucks it’s better to have them do it. On my4eat I do those changes as they are easy other than filling in the tube with the inter cooler on. But I have a special funnel and it takes some time.

Stuff like this is why hardly anyone trusts a dealership anymore.

I was getting my oil changed at mine not all that long ago. I cant do it myself at my apartment .. before anyone asks. Someone was there for a tire patch and the advisor told them they couldnt guarantee the patch based on where the hole was at but they would try it and that if it didnt work they would probably need 2 tires because of how the awd system works. The customer didnt believe him at all and was talking to his gf or wife about how dumb they were to say that & then they looked it up on google because they started to talk amongst themselves about it. The tech wasnt trying to screw them over, he was actually being honest and wasnt trying to sell them anything but im sure theyve been screwed before by a dealership. I sure have as have most people.

awd should have all 4 tires replaces or the new one shaved to meet the circumference of the 3 existing tires. Tech was actually incorrect per subaru owners manual, but if he told them they needed 4 they probably would have had a hissy fit in the service department since they balked at 2.

This is true, but if someone was leasing or planning to get rid of the car at 100k or so, why would they care if your center diff went out earlier than it should have.

I have my doubts in this scenario that anything gets poured anywhere!

Mark me down as skeptical.

The last job I paid for a dealership to do was rebuild by engine (threw a bearing, didn't have the time/experience/facilities to rebuild it myself, got a free loaner car for the entirety of the job).

The whole time they kept referring to it as "a new shortblock" but I knew it was probably a refurbished one. A few weeks after the job was done, the engine started leaking oil from the valve gasket. Took it back and had them fix it, while shaking in their faces the 1-year warranty they gave me for the engine job. Thank goodness I had that.

After that, I never went back.
