Default 4EAT shifting issues

Hello everyone,

So my 95 LX Wagon 2.2L transmission is acting funny. It has a weird shift from 2-3rd. It starts out like a normal shift, followed by a few seconds of pause, then it feels like it completes the shift but with a quick fluctuation in RPM. So it feels like it's either a lagging shift or a quick slip. It also does this if I shift manually.

Another funny thing I noticed is that if I come to a complete stop and very slowly accelerate, the trans is starting out in 2nd gear. I know this b/c I can manually put it in 1st gear, and it will downshift. They are probably two unrelated issues but something I thought worth mentioning.

Within the last year, I drained and filled the tans at least 5 times as well as a new trans filter.

I appreciate your thoughts.

Sounds like the shift solenoids possibly , the shift solenoids have tiny plungers that can go or possibly the electromagnetic coils are on there way out. The drain/fills are a good preventive maintenance practice but might be a little too late. How many miles does your Subaru have on it?
If it's high mileage it might be worth changing all of the shift solenoids out for new ones.

Thanks for the reply. It has about 170,000 and started doing this after about 150,000. Won't a bad shift solenoid throw a TCM code?

Not necessarily, Only if it's on the electrical side.
