Default Lost my 2008 STi Key and Fob....

.....and apparently lost part of my mind in the process.

Seriously though, in my 30 year driving career, this is the first set of keys I've lost and it has driven me bonkers.

I have a spare original key and fob as well as the gray (valet) master key. I just really want to have 2 sets of keys and 2 fobs.

Called the dealer and was quoted roughly $350 for the key blank, the cutting, the fob and the programming. My local dealership is known for being $$$ on parts.

Found the oem Fob #88036FG000 on Amazon for ~ $120: https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Subar.../dp/B00IGZRCRU

OEM Key blank 57497AG070 on Amazon for ~ $60
https://www.amazon.com/Subaru-Factor.../dp/B0089KN63Q

Questions:
1) I'm assuming there is a way to DIY the key fob programming? Will research this on youtube.
2) Is the dealer the only place than can cut this type of key?

Any other advice would be great.

Welcome to modern cars. That's cheap compared with an S2000. My son bought one which came with only one key and one fob. For Christmas, I bought him a key from the dealer and got it programmed. $250 for the key and $75 for programming. No fob, just the key.

There are eBay options but if you pay $100 and can't get it cut, use a locksmith, then try to program it and fail, what do you then have?

I looked at the knock off brand fobs and blanks but just didn't want to run the risk of either not working and wasting the $$$.

My local dealership is really only a good source for getting and verifying part #'s. Buying parts there is only a last resort since they are 50-70% more expensive than sourcing the same OEM part on line.

So, yeah. It seems like an OEM thing only.

I didn't realize this but the physical "key" has a chip in it that has to be programmed as part of the immobilizer. This means if I buy a new key, I have to get the other keys I have reprogrammed as well. In the event I magically find the lost key, it will no longer work as it will have to be reprogrammed as well.

The Fob s a different deal. It can either be programmed by the dealer with a scan tool or DIY with a very tedious process of "ON" -"OFF" cycles and lock-unlock combinations to manually program in the new key fobs Identification number.

I may see if I can live with only having one fob for a while. What a pain in the a**

There really isn't much that can compare to the euphoric feeling of finding something that was lost....that moment when you see the thing....most unexpectedly and in the most random of place.

There they were....out in the yard. I don't even recall being in that part of the yard.

I feel like King Arthur having just found the holy grail.

Awesome news!! Glad you found it!

Just curious, do you have a dog? Is it possible the dog got a hold of it?

I do not have a dog.

There is a squirrel that has been giving me bad vibes recently though, now that you mention it. :hmm: Maybe he's got it out for me.

Haha, this is a coincidence, I lost my subie keys a few days ago, searched my whole house and yet couldn't find them was starting to lose my mind to.

Turns out they were in my boots that I have not worn in a while, probably fell in there when I was renovating my room.

My dealer charges $209 for cutting and programming and the key.

I wish there was a way to program it manually without having the dealer software.
