What came after your STI?
I have had my 06 STI for about 11 years now, and i've loved every second of it. But the more I go and test drive more modern sports cars, it just really lags behind in performance. It's completely stock currently and has been for the last 3 years, and only has 85k miles on it so I feel I can still get a good deal if I were to sell it.
Those who have moved on, what was your next car?

Sounds like a pre-cursor to a "FS 2006 STI" thread in the classifieds section.
What have you test driven that you feel this way? What is your age? What is your family circumstances, if any? Expand on what you mean by "lags behind in performance"? Do you mean raw HP, straight line speed, braking, turning ability, interior? Help us help you. |

I did actually try to sell it way back in 2012 when I was supposed to relocate but ended up holding it all this time. Barely put any miles on it anymore because i've got several other cars including a pair of Forester XT's currently but 1 of those is going away in a week. I've cared for the car its whole life, I just feel like it's time. And especially after driving some newer sports cars it's really hard to keep.
It just feels old and outdated honestly. I've test driven a bunch of different cars in the past 3-4 months. What I'm looking for is a true Sunday driver. I've currently got 2 Forester XT's, an NA Miata that's mostly just a track car at this point. A 64 Austin Healey Sprite for vintage racing, and a Suburban 2500 as a tow pig. Ideally the replacement would see casual open lap use (maybe 3-4 times a year) but mostly just a Sunday cruiser to whip around in the mountains on weekends over the summer. Trying to stay under $40k ideally. Used GT350: fast as hell and makes my pants wet with noises but hardly enjoyable to ride around on the street. The regular GT I like, but harder to find used ones with the PP2 package which is pretty essential because the stock brakes are terrible. Camaro SS and 1LE: I like this option. The SS is comfortable on the street just for sunday hoons. The 1LE is a track monster but road comfort again is harsh. The cabin layout is also ridiculous 997.2: what i'm leaning towards honestly. Power delivery is buttery smooth. Ride quality is fabulous and driving position/engagement is hands down the best i've felt. C7: Eh, I love the power and handling and everything but I just can't bring myself to love the styling and the funky cabin layout. E9X/F80 M3: I worry about reliability of small stuff and about how the previous owners cared for the car. This is a concern with the Porsche as well but in my experience it seems most Porsche were well cared for, and not someone who leased an M3 for 450 a month and trashed it. ND Miata: Meh, i've got an NA and they're slow. BRZ/FRS/GT86: Meh. Lovely drive but again, I have an NA and I don't feel they do anything much better. 370z: I'm not a huge fan of Nissan. I couldn't feel connected at all to the car and it just felt like the STI, old and outdated. Last edited by m0viestar; 03-25-2021 at 04:16 PM. |

The Porsche 997.2 is in a league all its own. With Porsche money comes Porsche maintenance money.
If you don't mind an auto trans then look at the new Z4 M40i. The B58 is a very nice motor. The interior is great. Most maintenance can be achieved by a DIYer, if not possible it will likely be cheaper than a Porsche. |

I went from a 2016 WRX, to a 2016 GTI, to a 2018 RS3.
Personally, I will never purchase another vehicle without some form of All-Wheel Drive/4-Wheel Drive system. |

OP if you list your car, be careful to ask at least double what you think it's worth. It's the only way.

I've bought several cars after buying my STI in 2016, but have not found a car yet to 'replace' my STI. I don't think there is one besides another STI at this point so decided to keep mine until the day I get tired of these kinds of cars or breaks down.
There is really no other new car out there that is setup like the STI.. |

Your STI being a sedan and you have a couple pure sports cars, I would suggest an Alfa Romeo Guilia, you also have multiple cars so if it did have a mechanical issue, you have another car while you get it sorted. Since you would only drive it a little, you could go Quadrafoglio. From what I hear the maintenance is outrageous on the Quadrafoglio but if you are only putting a few thousand miles a year on it the cost would amortize out okay.

What came after my 07 STi I bought new in 2007? A 2011 STi I bought new and drove for 10 years.
What came after my 2011 STi? A 2020 STi I just bought. The GR STi being over 10 years old is getting dated but still a great car if you keep and modify it. The problem is you kept the car stock. Properly modified, these cars are incredibly fun to drive 0-80 mph. Mod your STi man! Some of the cars on your list are much more more money and yes...much faster than stock or even modified STis. I was cross shopping used GT350s before I bought my 2020 STi. I drove from LI to CT to test drive a 2018 and basically gave me the keys to take it out by myself. Because of COVID the salesman doesn't go with you! The GT350 is a blast, sounds so amazing and handled the on/off ramps like a champ. I still want one but chose the STi just as an all around safe choice GT350 gets interesting way up high in the rpms and I was doing 90mph. My flexfuel STi had more torque. The GT350 is a garage queen and wouldn't be much fun in winter even with performance winter tires. Gt350 was about $20k more than STi and insurance higher. GT350 had some known potential engine issues and it f I modded and it broke, a new voodoo motor is $30k. A new STi shortblock is $2k. GT350 being NA, not a whole lot of modding to do. Can't get more power as you become bored unless you add a S/C It will be hard to find anything under $40k that will be as engaging as an STi. AWD, real Manual, hydraulic steering, easy to mod |

just get an accessport and 3" downpipe and full 3" exhaust to the bumper
' and you will be glad you did. Easily reversible back to stock and dollar for dollar a nice bump in power torque and sound. Plus the top brands are all stainless steel, so will never rust. The accessport is also very versatile and you will learn more and get more use out of driving the car. |

Went from a 2009 WRX, to a 2014 S4, to a 2017 M3, to a 2020 STI. The STI is the most fun out of all of the cars mentioned. I plan to keep this car for a long time, it's definitely the last of its kind.
In my opinion, the vast majority of modern cars suck. Anything new or all new redesign post ~2015 just isn't the same. Something about the EJ Subarus just feels different. Like how they "used to make 'em." I realize everyone's situation is different, but for me, the grass was not greener, so I came back home . |

Yes it was. The clutch feedback was much better than the STI but the shift action wasn't. But on the other hand there was much less shift shock due to it not being AWD and the auto rev match made it extremely easy and smooth as a DD. Does ruin your shift technique though because you start to rely on it since it it does all the work for you. I honestly don't think I stalled it once in my 3.5 year ownership. Overall though I think the DCT is a better transmission for the car.
But there were many reasons the M3 wasn't really for me. It's a capable car but once I got over the power, it just wasn't the car I was looking for. The STI overall is more fun for what I am looking for in a car. |

Your stable of cars sounds very similar to what I had at one point. Yukon XL tow vehicle, CRX racecar (that I bought because my SSA track records in an E30 M3 were slower than this former SCCA car...I ran prepared C), Factory Five Cobra, Legacy GT (5M, of course).
I moved on to a Lotus Elise. I've always been a low power, good handling car guy. Where you've got the Sprite, back in the day, I had a string of 2 MGBs, a Midget, 3 Alfa spiders. If you're looking for more acceleration, would you consider building something? Factory Five Cobras have unbelievable support these days. I built it before I had internet and did fine. There's also the 818, which is Subaru based and meant to use a simple N/A setup, but an STi drivetrain can certainly be done. Other than that, I'm thinking S2000, Porsche 718 Cayman, Lotus Exige. Or a new STi. While not any faster, the materials are far better than they were in 07. My son has a 2020 STi Base and it is really well put together. I've driven it a bit and might consider getting one. Or a GT4? Don't know. My son talks about his next car all the time. R35 GT-R. He's not as hung up on a manual as I am, I guess. |

I still love my STI.
If I was you, one hundred percent PORSCHE. It sounds like you want a car that's extremely modern but still maintains that "drivers car" feeling. |

Traded my 2019 STI in for a very low mileage (2400 miles) 2017 Shelby Super Snake. It's an absolute monster. I came from the Mustang community (05 GT and 04 Cobra) before a brief 6 year Subaru stint (15' WRX and 19' STI), so I'm familiar with the Ford platform.
