The Civic beats the WRX just about everywhere. The Accord is very close. In snow, both the Accord and the Civic are very good, but the WRX is just a bit better.

For me, a WRX with 300-ish HP and a 6MT would be very attractive.

Although, a 400 HP STI ...
If the Honda or Toyota are better then why are you still driving a WRX? I know I did not want to go as high on cost as a Type R and I chose a WRX over an Civic SI for all wheel drive. Why don't you get the Toyota or Honda then. For me the power number is irrelevant as my WRX has plenty of power. A little more make no difference. I don't care which car is quicker in a straight line.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a2...-engine-specs/

If it was easy to mass produce 4-cylinder engines of this power level automakers with more expertise at designing and building engines like VAG, Ford or Honda would have already done it but as you can see by what MB had to do it's extremely costly to build a 4-cylinder engine at these power levels and maintain acceptable reliability to make it last for the warranty period. There is simply no way Subaru can build that and maintain the current price point as this engine would be extremely expensive to build.
You make a compelling argument! If we call it 298kW does that feel more achievable?

I have to agree though - I don't see how they could do it. But I'm rooting for it.

This, really. It shouldn't need to be said. Even with the ridiculous treatment they give the Camry these days, it's a hyperappliance compared to a WRX. I get why people let it bother them that it's not faster than that, but it doesn't matter.

If a Camry compares remotely favorably against a WRX for you, the WRX is no longer for you. And that's fine. You've graduated, go get a better car. There are a zillion to choose from, they're just all more expensive.

My MK7 Golf R was a great place to be (as where al my VW's). Quality interior, almost all the amenities. Fun to surprise people with nearly 300hp in a compact hatchback on the highway. Pulling away from BMW's and V8 trucks was always fun.

But, the non-highway driving experience was also always lacking. The MK7 is a FWD car that can optionally transfer 50% of torque to the rear, which makes it neutral, capable, and easy to drive, but never really spirited like my RWD biased STi, especially on loose surfaces.

The MK8 Golf R reportedly has a "drift mode" and trick rear diff like the Focus RS, which might change things. But we're all going to have to see if that translates into a positive driver experience.

I ended up trading my Golf R in for a fully loaded MK7 GTI w/DSG transmission just to have a better commuter car after my job situation changed, but I really miss the character and fun of the STi. Personally I'm leaning towards either a 2022 BRZ or STi as a weekend car if they can deliver a reliable engine. My stock STi made it 135k on Shell 93oct before a ringland failure...

Subaru... where shortblocks are scheduled maintence.

The Prior post to me is where Subaru needs to focus, not more power. Make motors and drive trains that left unmolested will last. Then if you can get more power out of it do so. Also refine what they are making now, smother power delivery, issues like the 1st 2nd shift on current WRX. Sort those things out or improve them. I positioned my self on my current car, so that I can go to a 2022 model, stick with my car or get the current model. If the 2022 delivers a compelling argument for my purposes then I will be interested. More power is not a requirement though. I actually fall more into the camp of just keeping the essence of what the car is now, just improving drive train elements that are common complaints. Now I do see an argument though for a halo car above STI. With all the money people spend on Tuners, I do think Subaru should offer the car those people want. Also more custom options for the interior again for same reason. Let buyers willing to pay essentially custom order the upgrades they want. Buy a base model STI or a custom order one.

My fantasy base WRX would delete most of the things we are used to, power windows, power locks, power seats, fancy speakers. I would take a simple head unit with a backup camera and basic climate control, however, just give me a light simple back to basics all wheel drive sports sedan. If I could buy any car that is the one I would get.

Also as someone said above, Toyotas are appliances, Honda is doing a better job at delivering an enthusiast car, their manual transmissions by all accounts are sublime. But for me the WRX is the one. I won:t even consider a European car or a Ford.

100% on everything you said. I don't want nor need a 400 HP STI. I just want it to be reliable, capable and fun.

VW, by all indications, have fixed the drivetrain. They also fixed the numb steering. We may finally have a winner here. It's definitely on my list.

I think a range of 320-340 HP is probably what we will get but the biggest game changer will be better response at lower RPM's. The biggest issue with the EJ257 is that the powerband is so narrow as it's a dog when you are below 3500 RPM which makes it feel slow on the street compared to modern vehicles with DI engines that make torque at low RPM's in comparison.

I think it was DSG only wherever it sold as well, though not 100% sure.

I'd take it even with the DSG; still beats an HTCVT Levorg that we don't get either .

Which 'RWD biased' STI did you have? Subaru went to a 41/59 torque split in 2006 and it only feels like it's pushing from the rear when you're nearing the limit at full boost in my experience. The '05 & '04s felt much better with their 35/65.

I don't understand why Subaru didn't go back to it, and decided to lean on yaw control in recent years.

I’d take it, despite the DSG because the form function best fits my needs.

That's fine. The VW 6-speed manual isn't very good and these vehicles are designed with the DSG in mind as the package is much better all around with the DSG.

This is where I'm at. I had an 07 WRX and 07 Legacy GT Spec B. Loved them both and if the GTB was a wagon, I'd of driven it forever. But it's been a few years since I had one, and almost bought a 2015 WRX back in 2014, but they wouldn't take a penny off so I bought an s2k instead. Considered an 11+ WRB, but they held their value so well locally I couldn't justify it.

All that to say, when it comes time for me to replace my current 2015 S4 6MT, I think my only choices will be a new WRX/STi, or an MK8 Golf R. Subie bringing back the wagon/hatch would pretty much clinch it. It seems to be a no brainer considering how many GR hatches are out there, but my gut is telling me they're going to keep things "simple" and just do a sedan.

I'm somewhat confused. You were going to pay new for a 2015 WRX sedan, but didn't want to because they wouldn't budge on the price. Why didn't you buy a 2014 or earlier WRX/STI hatchback?

If I weren't so over the EJ I'd probably consider a lightly used, southern-hemisphere-owned STI hatchback. And I think it'd be worth a road trip anywhere from coast to coast.

For me there were zero left on the lots. By the time everything was confirmed, and no hatch for new generation, there was already one or less in the state of California. And it was silver. And it was sold to Texas by the next day.

That makes sense for sure, and I know that happened to a lot of people around here. But he said that he didn't get one because they held their value too well, which confused me because their value was equivalent to a brand new WRX sedan that he was willing to pay for.

I read it like he didn't want an old used Subaru, and didn't want a new expensive Subaru because it was a sedan, and then things, but if a hatch or wagon now, and then...S2k?

As an auto goes, yeah VW DSG is as good as they come. Drove my buddy's Mk7 R plenty and am impressed enough. I haven't met a modern (2009-on) VW shifter that I didn't like though. Some people hate the sort of dull/sponginess of them but it's perfect to me. I'm not a notchy fan.

6 speed in my R was lightyears better than the 5 speed in my wrx. The clutch doesn't hold much more than stock power, but whatever. If you're pushing more than stock power - pay to play.

I'm never quite sure what they mean by notchy. Maybe like my 1997 Integra GSR? There was like no play in it, felt very mechanical. It wasn't my favorite, prefered the BMW shifters which are much longer and don't like to be rushed.

The one in my 2020 Si is really good though, doesn't feel like the GSR which was overly mechanical feeling for me.

What's wrong with the MT? The clutch needs to be replaced if you're going to push more than about 350tq but i don't see the big deal. The dsg is fast, but that's about it. They're boring after a couple months. The novelty runs out quick. Just my opinion. If you like autos thats cool, but ive never heard of there being anything wrong with the mt transmission mechanically. Ive spent alot of time of the vw/audi forums and after the honeymoon phase people don't seem to be as big on the dgs as when they first got it. Just food for thought. My gfs car is a dct and i don't even utilize the paddles anymore.
