Default New Subaru Levorg revealed as 'grand touring' estate

Quote:
Subaru has revealed the new Levorg Prototype at the Tokyo motor show, with a promise that the second generation of its four-wheel-drive estate will offer “a truly pleasing driving experience”.

The new machine is built on the Subaru Global Platform and is powered by a newly developed 1.8-litre turbocharged engine. It is due to go on sale in Japan in the second half of next year and, while not confirmed, is set to be rolled out worldwide after that. Subaru says it has developed the Levorg on a “Grand Touring philosophy”, with a focus on comfort, safety and enjoyment for long journeys.

Tokyo motor show 2019: live news and updates

The new car has been designed to showcase bolder styling that reflects the latest version of Subaru’s ‘Dynamic x Solid’ design language, with the firm claiming that it "has been developed as a symbolic model of the new generation of Subaru".

The Levorg Prototype is fitted with the latest version of the the firm’s direct injection boxer powerplant. The engine has been developed to showcase lean-burn technology, which Subaru claims balances acceleration and environmental performance, while also offering strong torque. The firm has yet to reveal any performance figures.

The new Levorg utilises a full inner frame construction chassis, which is designed for maximum body rigidity. The machine also features the latest version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance system, which utilises a new wide-angle stereo camera and four radar systems, along with information gathered from high-definition mapping. That allows for systems such as pre-collision braking, automatic speed adjustment heading into corners and hands-free driving in heavy traffic.

The car also offers a range of connected services, the first time they have been offered on a Subaru model in Japan.

Subaru has given no information on when the new Levorg will be launched in markets beyond Japan. The first generation model went on sale in 2014 in Japan, and was launched in European markets the following year.

On another note about it, they also debut'd the engine:

Subaru sells a compact wagon overseas related to the Impreza. It's called the Levorg, and on Wednesday at the Tokyo Motor Show the Japanese automaker rolled out a prototype previewing a redesigned Levorg due on sale in 2020.

While the redesigned Levorg isn't expected to reach the United States, elements of the vehicle may influence future models destined to be sold here, like the next WRX.

Key among these is a new 1.8-liter turbocharged flat-4. The engine features direct injection and other fuel-saving technologies, and is said to balance acceleration and efficiency.

Interesting packaging on it. It looks like they moved the turbo to the RH side of the motor. Which to me tells me that it's possible that it DOESN'T have an Equal Length header. Which may mean "Subaru Rumble" is back?

You're asking Subaru to bring this to their biggest market, the US? Don't be absurd.

IS THAT A JOJO REFERENCE? Lol just kidding, but there is no way a levorg will come here. What is good news though is that it basically represents what the new wrx will look like. That being said, when do you think we should expect the wrx to debut seeing that the levorg has??

Levorg News Release PDF in English, explanation of new features.

https://www.subaru.co.jp/press/file/...019_1023_2.pdf

World Premiere of All-New Subaru Levorg Prototype
at Tokyo Motor Show 2019
Tokyo, October 23, 2019 - Subaru Corporation today unveiled the all-new Subaru Levorg Prototype at the 46th
Tokyo Motor Show 2019.
The all-new Levorg is a performance wagon taking full advantage of Subaru's latest technologies. With this
vehicle, Subaru envisions to create "a future that everyone can enjoy driving at their fullest, at their will" in an era
where autonomous driving technology is widely spreading.
For all its customers who put faith in the brand, Subaru is developing the all-new Levorg with the aims of "realizing
a future where everyone can truly enjoy driving in a car that enriches the life of the customer."
Based on Subaru's "Grand Touring philosophy," which is pursued among engineers to develop a car that allows
the driver and passengers to "go further with more comfort, safety and enjoyment that makes them feel like time is
flying," the all-new Levorg features various cutting edge technologies and has been developed as a symbolic
model of the new generation of Subaru.
The exterior design of the all-new Levorg has applied the new design concept "BOLDER," which highlights the
value and character of each Subaru model with bolder expression. With the new concept, the exterior design of
the all-new Levorg aims to express "the enjoyment to control the vehicle at will" as well as the "passion that
inspires people to try something that has never been tried before."
In the aspect of technology, the all-new Levorg is equipped with the new-generation EyeSight, which consists of a
newly-developed stereo camera with wider viewing angle and four radars to offer truly enjoyable driving
experiences with peace of mind, in any condition. Additionally, the latest advanced driving assist system using
high-definition map and vehicle locator supports highway driving, while connected services provide a sense of
security, even in case of emergency.
In order to provide a truly pleasing driving experience for all drivers and passengers, the all-new Levorg employs
the Subaru Global Platform with full inner frame construction as well as the newly-developed 1.8L
horizontally-opposed direct-injection turbo engine, which balances acceleration and environmental performance
at a high level.
The production version of the all-new Levorg is scheduled to go on sale in the Japan market in the second half of
calendar year 2020.
Main features of the all-new Levorg Prototype
***9632; Exterior Design
Based on the Subaru's common design philosophy "Dynamic x Solid," the all-new Levorg applied the new
design concept "BOLDER" that highlights the value and character of each Subaru model. Its design aims to
express "the enjoyment to control the vehicle at will" and "passion inspires to challenge something that one has
never tried before".
***9632; Technologies that bring peace of mind in any driving condition
Next-generation EyeSight (Newly Developed)
With renewed stereo camera scanning wider viewing angle in combination with four radars located in front and
rear bumpers, the next-generation EyeSight senses 360-degree around the vehicle and has expanded range of
pre-collision braking operation to cover crossing and turning at an intersection of low visibility.
High-Definition map and vehicle locator (Newly Developed)
The locator precisely detects the vehicle position by utilizing information from GPS and Michibiki (Quasi-Zenith
Satellite System). In combination with high-definition map data, the vehicle recognizes the shape of highway
ahead, reduces speed before going into a curve and assists hands-free driving in traffic congestion.
Connected services (First time in Subaru for Japan market)
As "Connected Safety," the Advanced Automatic Collision Notification system automatically sends an alert to an
operator who immediately contacts the fire department and police department to request for a rescue and also
coordinates with cooperating hospital for prompt lifesaving, when it detects a big impact from a collision. The
vehicle also gets connected to an operator by a push of the button in case of emergency such as driver's
medical problems.
***9632; Technologies that enable truly pleasing driving experience for all drivers
1.8L horizontally-opposed direct-injection turbo engine (Newly Developed)
The new Boxer turbo engine with lean-burn technology balances acceleration and environmental performance
at a high level. It also brings superior dynamic quality with its strong torque.
Subaru Global Platform & full inner frame construction
Subaru Global Platform has evolved in combination with full inner frame construction that enhances body
rigidity further. With superior controllability and dynamic quality, the vehicle offers pleasing driving experience
for all drivers and passengers.

And I'll move this here:

We won't get it because it was launched in Japan to no fanfare no eyeballs no care. It's a good goddam vehicle for people with small families and who care about fun cars that can handle well on PAVED ROADS and can fit into normal parking spots.

Beat that horse one last time.

Hey does anyone know if this "SGP & Full Inner Frame Construction" can just be adapted to the current Impreza chassis? I can't find any documentation about the Impreza having this Full Inner Body Construction, but the new Legacy and Outback are utilizing it and the new Levorg is as well.

I assume the Levorg is based off the Impreza chassis again. But if not what does that mean if the Impreza chassis can't be adapted to this new manufacturing process. Is the Levorg chassis actually separate?

Info on what "Full Inner Frame Construction" is: "In another Subaru first, the Legacy utilizes a full inner frame construction in which only the outer panels are welded to the structure after the entire body framework is assembled, unlike a conventional manufacturing process in which the upper and under bodies are assembled separately and then joined," Subaru wrote. "This new inner frame construction is significantly stiffer and lighter than the previous Legacy's conventional structure."

It isn't listed for the Ascent and Forester as well. Sounds like a monocoque design. Might be part of the future platform sharing program with Toyota or possible EV?

I think it's an FB18DIT replacing the FB16DIT. All the bits from the FB family look to be in the same place.

Agreed. Given that the 1st Gen Levorg front end mirrored in large part the WRX/STI front end, I may pass on buying the next gen WRX/STI, if that pattern continues.

Not feeling this one. Maybe it will grow on me in time, but we won't see it in the States anyway so no difference. Guess my old V60 will stick around longer!

From additional reading I have done on Legacy/Outback it's just about how they tie the frame components together at which times in the assembly process. It uses more adhesive and welds which I guess saves on weight and improves structural rigidity. Here is an article I found about the Outback: https://www.autonews.com/manufacturi...s-redesign-too

Wish someone that either works at SIA or a very knowledgeable sales person would chime in. Wonder if JustyWRC knows about this new Assembly process.

To be honest the first gen looked much better. The front end is way too busy with all the angles and protrusions. Also the rear overhang and sloping roofline gives off the illusion of the dreaded reverse rake stance.

Do I see a 48V starter-generator. Can't see the pully good under-right. Nowadays they use electric water pumps. Take only 300 Watt, belt driven 1 KW
