Default 2008+ Impreza/WRX/STI - B Pillar Rust

Started noticing rust bubbles underneath the vinyl stickers on both front door B pillars.

Wondering if anyone has had this happen and how you fixed? I am aware that the stickers can be purchased however is the rust underneath manageable?

This seems like a design flaw considering both front doors have rusted in the exact same area. When you take a look at the inner facing side of the same area there is definitely rust visible.

I have the same thing, but only on the drivers side. It seems like it's in the exact spot where I place my thumb when opening the door. Mine is just bubbled, and has been for a while...can't see the rust yet.

Better get it fixed. My '08 started as just a small bubble last
year and I thought it was just surface rust. I told myself that I'd get it fixed
this summer and it's turned into a serious cancer. I suspect that water gets
trapped inside the door at that spot, for whatever reason, and it turns into
this. I see this as a MAJOR repair and will likely be easier to just
replace the door.

The passenger side appears to be unaffected so far.

Not sure what to do with it at the moment. I've got to fix some paint damage
on my wife's MY11 Silverado first.

Interesting. I have a '16 and I notice there are white-ish prints on the passenger side where my girlfriend gets in (lotion and crap). I wonder if that eventually leads to this.....

Honestly though, if you peel of the "black out" tape, sand it down, put some mud on it sand it down, then reapply new black out tape, should be ok

I believe the issue is a manufacturing flaw. The water likely channels in from the top of the sticker opening of the door and moisture pools in that area eventually leading to rust.

It's the only explanation as I do not ever touch that area of the door yet I have the same issue on the drivers side.

Unfortunately out of warranty and unlikely that the dealership would even help with repairs...

I'd say this is you best option. Might have a tough time matching the black out tape so might plan on doing both sides to be safe.

Subframe for my front seats have had rust on them since I had the car it probably a assembly defect or was exposed to rain salt before it was built.

I might attempt a fix before winter rolls around. Here are the part numbers for the tape sash in case anyone was also looking.

I hope there aren't any other surprises once the tape comes off...

I had mine repaired a few weeks ago. The shop sand blasted the area on both sides and used a structural epoxy filler of some sort to inhibit rust and provide strength since mine was rusted all the way through, and then a normal filler to smooth out and paint. I'll post up a picture when I can.

Mine was a little less worst than yours and when I had it opened up, and saw that the whole inside was rusted away, I took it to the body shop.

The body shop end up cutting out more than 1/2 the B-pillar sheet metal on the door.. It was all rusted through. What you already see from the outside, it's easily 10 times worst on the inside. Also, there is a good chance that when you remove the chrome window seal piece, it will get bent out of shape and you will not be able to reuse that. It's an expensive piece to replace too $90Cnd from my local dealer.

Best of luck with your repair.

I haven't seen any rust on my '08 2.5i yet. And I live in the salty winter state, Indiana. Anyway, I would plan on ordering the new trim pieces. Pop those off and sand/grind off any rust, paint to avoid future rust, and replace.

I have the same problem, just sanding it down is not enough. It rusts from the inside, if it shows from the outside, it means that it rusted through.

Here is what mine looked like:

Without the vinyl, not too bad right?:

After 10 sec with a wire wheel, you can see the hole:

GOOD work.

Its just ridiculous that you even have to do that.. to an 8 year old car no less

A bit late to the party... but I have the exact same issue!

Upon closer inspection this same kind of rust is happening on all the door seams of my 2013 WRX Hatch.

Subaru said they would do a 'good faith repair'--however this is totally a rust perforation warranty claim. Subaru did acknowledge it was an issue but denied handling it through a warranty claim.

I am slated to have this work done in the spring (car is stored for the winter).... However I am considering taking them to small claims if they do not replace the doors and the hatch.

This thread proves this to be a larger issue.

Anyone know the source of how the water is getting into the doors? It would be pointless to fix the rusted bits only to let water find its way back in and start rusting it all over again.

that area should be completely sealed when the door was manufactured, If something was in there that caused the car to rust from the inside like that within 5 yrs.... it's a defect! Even thou Subaru won't admit it

There is a hole at the top of the window frame. It's used to attach the weatherstripping to the door with a plastic clip.

The problem is that there is no drain at the bottom of the window frame

i've noticed a little bit of rust creeping through on the hatch on my '09, right below the wiper arm. water seems to pool here and it's starting to take its toll. looks terrible

Kind of upsetting that an 8 year old car would get rust in a spot like that. I might not be surprised if it was in a wheel arch but that is not a spot I would expect to rust.
