Default Turbo Spec Comparison Table (Wheel Sizes, Max Airflow, Bearings, Etc.)

Turbo Spec Comparison Table (Wheel Sizes, Max Airflow, Bearings, Etc.)

This list has been created to help compare turbo's more easily. As I looked at different turbo options it became clear that it was not a straightforward task, mainly due to inconsistent methods of listing turbo specifications by different manufacturers. Because of this it was difficult to even compare the physical wheel sizes of different turbo's.

I began compiling the information that I could find by looking online and in the product catalog's of various manufacturers. Along the way I asked manitou for help and he did a lot of the work calling around to try and fill in the blanks that I could not easily find, and also adding info for other brands and models. Thanks to him we have a pretty good list together at this time.

We chose common turbo's on the Subaru platform. Both stock location and rotated turbo's are included.We decided to keep this table as simple as possible and only include some of the most basic specifications. This includes the inducer and exducer measurements for both the compressor and turbine, and also the max flow rate of the turbo.

This post is NOT meant to be a lesson on turbo basics. If you need that there are many resources on this site and elsewhere online. Here are a few links to get you started.

Here is the list that we have compiled so far. Please let me know if there are any errors. All of this information should have come straight from the manufacturer, but there could still be errors, and I would be happy to correct any that are found. We are open to suggestions for more turbo's to be added to the list. If you have the specifications available that would make it much easier to get it added.

Ben, Good job putting this up along with the diagram! The only thing from our initial list here that I need to fill in is the turbine exducer for the Borg Warner turbos.

So if anyone can help us with those BW TrbExd dimensions it will help to make our initial list complete. PM xluben or I your notes on these and we will update them.

I'll keep trying to reach Full Race but I know they're busy getting ready for SEMA.

As a general note, xluben and I made the initial list based on what we feel are to most popular turbos for our Subaru's these days. We know everyone has their favorite and it may or may not be on the list above.

We wanted to show the basic wheel dimensions as well as wheel pairing relationship from the turbine to the compressor. Hopefully it will make choosing a turbocharger an easier process!

Edit: I did get thru to Full Race today and was able to get the TrbExd dimensions for the Airwerks JB turbos we have on the list. I'm sure xluben will be updating the list soon!

BTW, the EFR's TrbExd dimensions are not published anywhere even Full Race does not have these dimensions. So I guess we are on our own with those but one could deduce these dimensions based on some assumptions or someone could actually measure them. If you do please let us know what they are!

Thank you for the time you both have put in making this list, makes me even more happy with my turbo of choice. (mostly posting to have a quick link)

Its amazing how different the GTX series flows in comparison to the GT series, when these all get tossed in order the way you do it makes some choices look like a sad joke that are commonly accepted for builds.

I think if people view these more in this way we will see only a few of these options even being considered.

On a side note would it be possible to have this posted in a way that is downloadable? I would love to read over this when I am not at work (no internet out where I live) For all I care it can wait until you are "done" with the list if you prefer.

Thank you

Probably not! Factory VF turbos are all pretty similar size most of them are around 37 lb./min. A couple like the VF22 and Vf42 TS are a little bigger maybe 38-39 lb. There is plenty of comparison out there on these turbos but little in the way of specs.

Can we get standard mitsu sizes for comparison? A Blouch 16gXT is a lot bigger than a standard 16g.

BW EFR turbine sizes
58mm is a 88 trim
64mm is a 88 trim
70mm is a 88 trim
74mm is a 87 trim
80mm is a 92 trim

So I think that means the exducers are
58 = 51
64 = 56
70 = 62
74 = 64
80 = 74

If I remember what trim means.

It really does help put some of these turbo's into perspective.

I will look into getting the spreadsheet hosted somewhere. I can probably put up a DropBox link.

Yeah, the issue is lack of info. If someone has taken the measurements, I would be happy to post them.

Yes, I really wanted to add the standard Mitsubishi specs (16G, 20G, etc), but again, I had a hard time finding any of the info. If you know where to find it, I would be happy to add it.

manitou did the get BW (non EFR) specs, so I'll double check them against yours. I can also calculate them based on trim to double check your calculations. I had to do this for some of the other turbo's as well.

Here's another list that older members will remember (has other info, different from this thread, but still a lot of good info) but spreading info is never a bad thing.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1141476

Kudos to the guys that take time to spread info!

I have seen this, and I actually had it queued up to link to in the first post of this thread, but in all the times I've looked at it I've never once gotten any use out of it. I eventually decided it was such useless and outdated info that I didn't even include the link. Maybe someone can find a use for it, but the generalized statements as well as a very outdated selection shows little value to me.

Trim is the (inducer of the wheel / exducer)² *100

remember that the inducer and exducer are the opposite from turbin and compressor wheels.

Thanks for posting that formula. I've used it before. The manufacturers were pretty good about sharing their info.

Thanks guys! It's good to see it all in one place.

If someone wants to pass along the Mitsubishi 16, 18, 20g data we can add them to the list!

Thanks for the post! The trims for the EFR's are not exact as you listed. We could use an average of 88.5% trim for the 55-70 turbine wheels. The 74 is 87% and the 80 is 92%.

I'll work on these and get them to xluben to add to the chart!
