.010 oversize rings + factory piston... Yay or Nay?
I'm in the process of rebuilding a 95 legacy EJ22 to swap in for my 97 impreza outback EJ22. I just pulled the motor apart and checked the ring gap. It seems that with the new rings, I have .014" gap, where the manual calls for .005-.014". I was thinking of buying the first step of oversize rings which are .010" over (.25mm). Could I get by with using the factory piston with these rings? Should I have the block bored out to the full .010" over or could I leave it to what it is currently (I would guess that I am sitting at about .005" over as it sits). I don't really want to go buy pistons if I can avoid it safely.

Uh... you have a measured .014 in gap and the spec calls for .005 - .014 in gap. You are in spec, if nothing else is wrong install the rings and get on with it...
I should also add that if you are concerned about ring gap then you should do the due diligence and measure the bore for roundness a taper... -soobaviator |

Ok, general consensus is a nay, I'll go with that. But in doing more measurements, it looks more like a .013 or .012 overall on all cylinders. I'm guessing that I had the ring slightly crooked (I'm new at this, if you couldn't tell) and made the measurement off by a little bit. I'm just going to go with what I've got, standard rings and pistons, and be happy.
