I just put a clean latex glove around the outside and went to town with a large monkey wrench. The skin on my knuckles grew back within a month.

I think I will be using a nice, new T70 this time, though

Ouch!

Well, when you're in the market for a T70 Torx socket, please give me the opportunity to help you with that.

That makes no sense at all. Just buy the T-70

I'd like to know why you can find T-60 and smaller bits all over the place, but Subaru chose to go with the seldom seen T-70. I'd also like to know where I can find a cheap T-70 socket, since it will likely only ever seen use 5 times in its life... no offense TOOL

I cannot speak on Subaru's behalf, but typically a manufacturer considers a number of things to determine a certain fastener size to use (regardless of what bit size is commonly found in the marketplace): necessary torque holding requirements, vibration, surrounding materials, temperature range, etc. You can bet Subaru did the same for us.

No offense taken at all. But looking for a cheap alternative to something because of its infrequent use may be considered fine in other areas of life, however that logic is frightening IMO when used in terms of automotive maintenance.

Just got a GreatNeck 3/8 T70 at Autozone for 3.99. S2 steel (whatever that is) and heat treated.

When subject to that much stress, it is common that a 3/8" drive T70 and/or its counterparts will fail that way. Even though a 3/8" drive T70 may work, we strongly recommend 1/2" drive T70 sockets if being used on Subaru transmission drain plugs (especially if its the very first time being removed). The 3/8" drive T70 is better suited for the Chevrolet truck brake application (though we would still suggest using a 1/2" drive for that too).

Yeah, I got the same thing a few weeks ago.

Used it to change my fluid this weekend for the first time.

It did fine. I could feel the wrench flex, the actual bit was fine though.

I was afraid I would have to order this seldom used bit.

Autozone FTW.

FYI, the replacement tranny drain plug part # = 32103AA080 and the corresponding brass gasket = 803926070

https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/oe_parts_cat.html

This is good information for those that use a T60 and it doesn't work so well.

According to Ultimatetools website, the '04 - '06 STI don't need the T70 tool? So what does the STI use, the T60??

Maintenance manual says it's torqued to 51.6 ft-lb. You shouldnt need a breaker bar.

Until it shatters on you haha. I bought one at autozone to drain my tranny fluid the other day and the god damn thing blew up on me when i tried loosening up the drain plug. Must not have been heat treated properly. Gonna borrow one from the Snap-On guy now, because I know that one won't break on me.

Stupid question: is the brass gasket reusable or should it be replaced every time? I've reused it in the past.

When you're in a pinch you can use a big pipe wrench. I wasn't reusing my 5-speed so I wasn't concerned with retightening the plug, but I dont see whey you couldn't, just be careful.
