Edit: I have been playing it for 12 years, good god that makes me feel old. Shows the staying power of a solid game though.

I think my buddies and I singlehandedly kept a Korean internet cafe in business strictly because of CS. But the source engine is in dire need of an overhaul if it's going to attract the gamers that have been awed by the likes of BFBC2 and CODMW.

Source was okay, but too inconsistent with the hitboxes. Had to roll back to 1.6 for the bestest play.
I tried to fire it up again on my modern computer the other day, I couldn't get my mouse settings even remotely close. made me sad. Plus the resolution and stuff is all fubar'ed, w/e OpenGL stuff was still in the graphics options just did not work with my pc |

I'm onboard with this idea. CS was good times. I've played it since very early betas.

CS is pretty much the best-feeling FPS I've played. That's probably because I've played so much of it, but it has definitely become the bar against which other games are judged.

More news: Report from one of the guys (pro cs player) who got to go to valve and test it. Lots of interesting information.

Your face is a retarded statement. My point is that both of those engines are technological leaps and bounds ahead of source's engine. Does that make them better? Not necessarily, as source's strength has always been in its flexibility. That type of open-ness fosters a deeper level of involvement in the community and makes the games much more rich while exposing some really talented modelers and coders within the gaming audience. It's a tremendous credit to the community when a game like CS, TES:O, or rFactor have a shelf life well beyond the 1 or 2 years that's common with blockbuster games.

Game engine means nothing to most gamers. 99% of them can't tell you any technological differences between any game engine. CS has persisted because the mechanics are virtually perfect for it's given goals. As stated in the Torbull article, they've used the latest incarnation of the source engine and I can guarantee it looks as good as any other game. Not to mention most of the 'look' of a game is from it's art, not the actual engine ie: Look at all the games that use unreal engine, they go from cartoon art to crysis like photorealism. Both of your arguments are invalid.

Nowhere in their retorts did they mention about modability, which is a key component in my game purchases because closed games don't have enough diversity to last long on my hard drive.
Regardless, I'm extremely happy and giddy with anticipation with this release. I've only rented or buy/sell the likes of COD and BF, only revelling in their single player modes before moving on to the next game. This will be the first tactical shooter game that I plan to keep for a long time since ARMA I. |
