How to burble tune your Subaru- with no tuning experience? -video-
Alright guys I need your opinion in this. Is this guy doing stuff that would reduce the longevity of the engine? He claims that it won’t damage the engine.

Nothing you do to a modern vehicle's ECU for $10 is going to improve reliability or performance.

Romraider is what you tune the ecu with, nothing new there....
The ignition retard and probably no fuel cut on 0 throttle won't damage the engine but cats and turbo's won't like it |

So yeah, this isn't a good idea for longevity or reliability. You also can cook your exhaust valves, so it's not just cats and turbo. |

Good to see people throwing up some romraider content on YouTube, I feel like this particular video should have been a vlog rather than a how to.
Definitely not something people should follow without doing a lot of reading first. Maybe try simple changes and read a few tuning guides beforehand. Gotta start somewhere. I'd suggest this: http://www.netzonexpress.com/Files/HolyCrapItsFast_TuningGuide.pdf But this one's a classic too. https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1626520 And can't go wrong with the tuning guides on YouTube from HPA. https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCkH2fkUhM1nM86-j6xrg_sQ |

One of my friends who knows nothing about cars, but thinks his stock 115hp commuter car is a race car, and he's the greatest driver in the world, recently told me about the fad of making cars sound like that. He heard some other enthusiasts' cars at a car meet making the sound and he wanted his car to sound like that too on deceleration.
Pretty sure a couple decades ago I had an RX7 that made those sounds at idle haha. Different beast, different engine, in a different time. Certainly that "burble tune" isnt going to benefit the engine any, and I'm glad that the guy in the video didn't try to make any claims otherwise, and he was straightforward about what it was - Just something some people think sounds cool. As for damage, yeah i think igniting fuel at the wrong time, in the wrong place, and increasing exhaust gas temperature would be bad for sensors and stuff. The bigger question I wanted answered, and i dont think anyone asked in the youtube comments that i saw... Why was that guy on a couch in a clear plastic tent? hahaha. No offense to the dude, he may be cool and props to him for experimenting with "tuning" but my middle-aged-ass feels like he's some kid who made a fort out of some plastic around the old couch in the garage and thats his secret tuner hide out. not exactly the qualifications i look for in someone giving advice on something that may put my engine's life on the line. But with his ingenuity, after he has more experience I'll be looking him up in a few decades with how to tune an electric car or whatever the future holds |
