Hey guys,

I have a 2.0L 05 WRX, I have a check engine light that is flashing. The 2 codes that I have are p0302, cylinder #2 misfire and p1491, manufacturer specific, relating the the pcv valve.

Has anyone seen a pcv valve cause a misfire?

I am getting fuel to #2 cylinder, can smell unburnt fuel on spark plug, brand new plug, good coil pack, good injector, timing is good. Front 02 sensor is good.

Default 2009 WRX Cylinder 3 Misfire

I just bought a 2009 WRX with 142,000 miles drives fine, and is in good condition. After purchasing the car I had a solid CEL come on, it was a misfire on cylinder 4, I thought most likely the lightweight flywheel.

I pulled the spark plugs to find out that it had the N/A spark plugs (NGK LFR6A-11);I put the stock (NGK SILFR6A) plugs in. Now I was sure this was the reason for the miss, and not the lightweight flywheel. Before changing to the correct plugs I checked their gaps, they were all .030. Now after changing the plugs cylinder 3 is constantly misfiring at idle, (At around 2k RPM the misfires stop.) I can hear it misfire and see my COBB tuner detect roughness on cylinder 3, the putter is in perfect sync with the roughness counter.

This is everything I've tried to fix it so far, I've switched coil packs and the issue did not follow, Pulled the spark plug examined it (It looked fine there were no cracks, had almost no carbon; EDIT: because it was misfiring) and I did a compression test (That was fine as well).

Why would changing from the wrong spark plugs to the right spark plugs make it misfire, and only in one cylinder? I'm personally thinking it is a fuel injector, because at 2k RPM the misfire stops. But why would the issue arise after changing spark plugs?

And one last question should I use a carbon cleaner in my gas tank or jump straight to moving the injector and seeing if the issue follows?

(I can't make threads)

The wrong plugs werent really the wrong plugs, the were the wrong gap, and that wouldn't cause a miss until you were up in the boost. Make sure you got the coil pack plugged in good. Or swap it with #1 and see if the misfire moves. If not I'd start compression checking

I have changed the coil pack as you stated, and did a compression check. The compression was fine and the changing coil packs didn't stop the miss.

I've had misfire issues from the injector plug not making good contact with the injector pins

Just wanted to let you know, it was a faulty spark plug, that or I cracked it during installation. the plug looked fine when I pulled it out; It smelled of gas. But now that a new plug is in, it is running just fine.

Thanks for your help man.

Hey guys,

I have a Misfire in Cylinder 1, with codes P0301, PFFFF, and PFFFE. I have a steady CEL as of right now. CEL occurs when i go into boost. predominantly at 2nd gear going into 3rd, I feel the engine putter and misfire as well when going into boost even on the 4th and 5th. I changed the spark plugs at 110,000miles and this hasnt occurred till now at 145,xxx miles. So, I brought it to the shop to have the sparkplug changed and also had an inspection on it. here is the link: http://atxt.us/7tajvj . Now I dont know if their BSing me or something but they are saying to fix the problem they need a complete engine overhaul with cylinder and gasket sent to be fixed. Their quoting me somewhere around $3,000-$7,000. I dont know what to do. Any comments or your 2 cents would be much appreciated. thanks

Solved !

History:
Rebuilt motor assembled and run stock for 2-3k, everything working fine.
Upgrades after verified good running motor;
ID rails and ID1000s
Aeromotive FPR and lines
STI TMIC
Turbo
Turbo back exhaust
Etuned.

Ever since the new parts were installed I have gotten sputtering and P0304 and P0302 codes when revving past 3k. Like everyone suggested I did the following;
swap coils
swap spark plugs
regap spark plugs smaller
regap spark plugs bigger
ground straps
check evap hoses
check intake leaks
MAF
CPS
swap injectors

I test drove after every single iteration of the above culprits was changed out/fixed. Nothing fixed the P0304 code and sputtering.

I finally got fed up and loaded the stock tune, guess what popped up? A Left TGV code.
I haven't touched these since the upgrades, why is this showing now after weeks of troubleshooting? Turns out the Left TGV was unplugged and the tuners tune didn't throw a code for it.

All my misfires and stumbling were from a closed TGV, plugged it in and no more problems.

Have you done the timing belt, head gaskets and coil pack(s) at all?

Question Does this list apply to 2.5L turbo engines too?

Does this list apply to 2.5L turbo engines too?

I have a 2009 STI with 214.000 km / 130.000 miles. I recently started to get occasional cylinder 1 & 3 misfire CEL, every 50-200 km or so. Always those cylinders, always at the same time. As best as I can tell, the engine runs just fine. I don't notice anything different when the CEL triggers.

I have replaced the spark plugs and the ignition coils.

Before I work through the rest of the list, I'd like to ask you: which of these possible solutions would be more likely to apply in my situation, given the above?

First time post, sorry if I am missing any of the forum etiquette...

Your thoughts greatly appreciated!

Default Another possibility

Always double check harness connector, had a broke clip, that keeps the harness connected on my 99 forester sent it crazy on misfires and only did it when it was on a bad road where the car was bouncing from rebound.

Thank you. I’ll have a go at that too.

wanted to put my .02 in here for others.

I recently bought an 04 XT, and was getting an intermittent p0304 (Cylinder 4 misfire). It gradually got worse, and would come on almost daily after clearing it. It ended up being the injector.

I see a lot of people discrediting the possibility of the injector failing, but I tried just about everything else prior: Spark plugs, swapping coil packs, checking the plugs on the engine harness for the coil packs, Fuel filter, leakdown and compression testing.

I would like to note that I had a random stumble at idle...but besides that the car ran completely fine. So for anyone trying to source this code, make sure you take others advice on here and try swapping the injector as well to rule this out.

Question

So I’ve got a misfire on a 2007 Impreza 2.5i. It’s on cylinders 3 and 4 and only occurs around 5500 rpm. But I can’t feel it, (i only see the cel flashing) and my dealership seems to think it could be the ecu. The car hesitates majorly when accelerating unless I floor it. It’s a reman engine with like 3k miles on it. We’ve replaced plugs, wires, the coil pack and everything in between. We did a valve job, and that fixed it temporarily. Cleaned and replaced injectors and replaced the fuel filter. Could it just be a bad engine or an ecu? The car itself is at 171k miles. I have used the search button, and I can’t find anything close to what I’m looking for. I’ve spent way too much money on this car... I still love it, but the amount of time in the shop has been crazy.

Just a bit puzzled where to start on my 05 wrx. I replaced the spark plugs about 5 months ago with good NGK's with proper gap. The coils all looked rough, most likely they were stock and my car now has 121k. I have a Perrin uppipe and I also have the anti-fouler rear o2 sensor extension mod done to cancel out code P0420.
THE PROBLEM- Slightly rough idle after a heavy rain and cold start, car has a shudder every 10 seconds or so. Driving down the highway at about 80mph, the CEL turns on for P2096 (This one stores and stays on) and P0304 (this one doesn't store, but shows up on scanner. So post catalyst too lean and misfire in cyl 4, but the misfire was only momentary as the CEL doesn't flash and I'm able to use cruise. The car drives normal and after 100 miles the CEL will turn off and then on again about 100 miles later..
Should I start with cyl 4 coil pack and go from there? Any input would be appreciated!!

Default Misfire Codes but not misfiring

I have a 2012 STi completely stock right now fresh off a rebuild. Car sat for 2 months after rebuild and now throws CEL codes for misfire in cylinder 1 &2 but the car isn’t misfiring at all it drives fine just consistently get CELs at 4K rpm, everytime. Most times CEL flashes at 4K and accelerate through and it goes off. Stays on some times when I can’t accelerate. Had the coil packs switched in 1 & 2 and still does it. Car sat for 2 months after rebuild with battery disconnected. Started the break in this week and getting this problem now. Seems to be completely electrical and not mechanical as the car still drives fine. No knock or A/F problems on accessport. Anyone run into this problem before. My tuner shop is going to start diagnosing it this week just thought I’d see if anyone had some input.

This is a very common problem and there are alot of threads addressing this very problem. So here are the possible issues and solutions (read this first, then post about an issue if you have no resolution after trying said solutions):

MISFIRES

1. Wrong, worn or incorrectly gapped spark plugs. Generally NGK work best gapped between .028"-.030".

2. Clogged/dirty/bad injectors or fuel filter. Try changing the fuel filter. The maintenance schedule for the filter is every 30K miles. Have the injectors professional cleaned or at least run several bottles of a good injector cleaner through the gas tank. Also make sure you are using the correct octane gas! Either 91 or 93 unless you are specifically tuned for another octane!! (IE: race gas or E85) You can swap injectors from another cylinder and see if the misfire follows. If so this would indicate an injector issue if it does move..

3. Check valve clearances & compression. Perform a leak down/compression test first. The FSM has the valve clearance specs. This is a complete PITA with the motor in car.

4. Dirty or faulty MAF sensor. This causes an incorrect airflow readings. Misfires can result. Clean with CRC MAF cleaner or NON chlorinated brake cleaner. Make sure you are actually cleaning the MAF sensor and not just the IAT sensor. Common mistake. Also try swapping with a know good MAF to determine if the MAF is possibly bad.

5. Vacuum leaks or preturbo leak. Check where the FPR hose connects (generally you could get a P0457 or P0171 with this as well). Check the turbo inlet pipe where it connects to the turbo. This pipe is famous for ripping and causing a huge preturbo leak (P0171 as well).

6.Poor grounds/grounding. Clean the battery ground cable and ones that run to the intake manifold. Make sure all are connected. These are sensor grounds and must be kept clean.

7. Cam timing. Check cam timing per the service manual. Clean cam and crank sensor face.

8. Excessive PCV blow by. PVC gases will effectively lower the octane content of gasoline/petrol and can cause misfires along with knock. Get a catch can or air/oil seperater.

9. Carbon build up in heads/cylinders. You can use Seafoam or top end cleaner as well as other type of carbon remover.

10. Lightweight flywheels or crank pulleys. (phantom misfires) Can cause false misfires. Opensource tuning can disable.

11. Bad/loose coil pack or coil pack connector
. Test coil pack and move to other cylinder to see if DTC changes. If so this would indicate a coil pack issue. Also check the tower boot for corrosion.Make sure the connection to the coil pack is clean and tight. If the clip on the connector is broken, find a way to secure it.

12. Faulty fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump. Check fuel pressure. It should be bewteen 35-38psi idle @ sealevel. Removing the vac line at idle should give you 43 psi. The FPR is a 1:1 rising rate. For every 1 psi manifold positive pressure the fuel pressure should rise 1 psi.

13. Faulty front O2 sensor
Replace with new

14. Damaged crank timing gear

15. Misfires all cyclinders: Coil pack connectors mixed up (correct way:black to back, white to front),light weight flywheel,bad/unplugged crank or cam sensor, incorrect gapped plugs, cam timing off,bad front O2 sensor, poor grounding, fueling issue (fuel pump, fuel pump controller,FPR)

Flashing CEL (02-05 2.0L only) = Gross misfire. Doesn't always store as a DTC as it is momentary. For the most part diagnosis is the same as the above suggestions. This is more severe than the standard misfires and causes potential catalytic damaging consequences.

FYI-The bugeyes were plauged with misfires. Updating the ROM in the ECU to the latest revision from Subaru helps alleviate most false misfire issues. This can be done through the stealership or opensource software.

Hope this helps! Will add as other causes are found.

I have an 04 wrx that recently started throwing a cylinder 1 mis fire code along with a system running rich bank 1 code after installing a perrin turbo inlet. I changed all four spark plugs and swapped the coil packs from cylinder 1 and 2 but continues to mis fire on 1 . The code comes up randomly not always . It also seems to happen most often after I fill up with gas. Car hesitated to start and starts up with very shaky idle usually throwing mis fire code

Just want to let anyone trying to figure out a misfire:

My car:
2008 WRX EJ25
226xxx KM on the engine

So 6 days ago I was pulling into my subdivision, car randomly started shaking at a stop sign. No engine light. Pulled into my drive way, shut the car down and restarted, engine light came on and flashed. Rough idle, definitely could tell something was off. Immediately shut it off and started searching for possible reasons.

I found lots and lots of possible reasoning as to why it randomly started doing this on many forums. I bought a code reader from Canadian Tire. Misfire on Cylinder 1 and 3. Never changed to anything else, unplugged the battery. Always P0301 and 0303.

I pulled my spark plugs, boy were they ever fried. Cylinder 3 and 4 spark plugs were almost seized into the block which frightened me but I finally got them out. All four were extremely black, but you could still see where the spark was on it. I thought wow this must be the reason, a weak spark or something. I changed them, plugged everything back in. Nothing changed.

I took everything back apart, checked for spark on my ignition coils for Cyl 1 and 3, they sparked fine. I then took the timing covers off of the car and looked to see if everything was still lining up alright. Possible jumped tooth could cause misfiring. Everything was spot on and previous owner said the belt was done quite recently so it didn’t surprise me that everything was good.

The next day I pulled my intercooler off and turbosmart BOV off (was already on the car), took the hose to the throttle body off to see if the carbon build up was bad on it. Nothing, still cleaned it however. Then I saw the vacuum line disconnected to the BOV to the intake manifold. Plugged it back in thinking “This is it! This is the reason! Hell yeah”. Put everything back together, fingers crossed. Nothing, same codes. Same rough idling. I never let it run for any longer than a minute just in case timing was off I didn’t want to bend anything internally.

Another day passes and I read up about AVCS solenoids and banjo (union) bolts. I pulled the passenger side one out, having to bend a bracket and take a hose off. It looked fairly good, but everyone said that the piston inside was suppose to be pretty easy to move, which it didn’t move at all so I thought it was shot. I pulled the banjo bolt and thank god I did. The little tiny micro filter for the bolt was coming out the bottom. It was just about ready to go into wherever the hell the line leads to. I removed the filter and kept it out.

Today, the day I was going to purchase a new AVCS solenoid and banjo bolt I said **ck it and looked at the AVCS solenoid again, put the multimeter to it and the resistance was fine on it. Then I noticed there was a piece of junk, plastic or metal just sitting inside of it. I pulled it out and the piston moved freely again! Sprayed some lube and everything seemed good again.

My last hope, I shoved the banjo bolt and AVCS back in, put the hoses all back together. Threw everything back together quickly. If this wasn’t it I was stumped if it didn’t work. I started the car.

No rough idle, no shake. No engine codes!

Something so so little, a tiny piece of plastic was stuck in the piston holding it closed.

This is a lesson to don’t give up and keep trying things. Try not to just throw parts at your car and hope for the best, try everything you see on these forms and hopefully one of them works!! Thanks to everyone on NASIOC about misfiring!!

test the FPR to make sure it's still working in the correct PSI. It's just off cylinder 1 and will only affect cylinder 1. I had this issue, and replaced it with an OEM unit, and that fixed my code.

Thank you for the great information. I have an '02 WRX and get misfire codes on all cylinders (random which ones each time) that I discovered is most likely because of a lightweight flywheel.

I have no idea what ECU code version I am on, but I will definitely update if anyone thinks that will solve my problem? I could also just trade for a regular flywheel, if that is going to be easier.

So I know old thread but still seems kinda active..

Wanted to add to it and see if anyone has had this odd issue..

No codes but I'm getting a little cylinder roughness randomly on cyl 1,2,3 4 doesn't really show any most the time.

So I start checking everything. Got to the ground terminals on driver side and separate the terminals..

And I like to explore with the multimeter so I set it to voltage after checking resistance. And I notice .6 volts at the ground going to the BR wire trace it to b100 under dash from there goes to immobilizer data plug and vss test mode connector and a few other things.

I removed the BR wire from the brown plug f60 and grounded it to the chassis instead misfires go away AFR much smoother and idle even would almost stall before. Now doesn't..

But I'm measuring high resistance on that section. It seems to be somewhere in the dash wire loom harness.

Anyone had this issue?

I have a thread going in electric section if anyone wants to chime in there.
