Carla Wallenda, a member of "The Flying Wallendas" high-wire act and the last surviving child of the famed troupe's founder, has died at the age of 85.

She was the daughter of Karl Wallenda, who had founded the troupe in Germany before moving to the United States in 1928 to great acclaim. She was the aunt of aerialist Nik Wallenda.

Allan McDonald, the Thiokol engineer on site for the Challenger launch and refused to sign the formal approval letter (and was later overruled by his heavily pressured superiors) died yesterday at 83.

Shortly after the accident, relegated to the back of the auditorium for the initial inquiry, he famously spoke up after he realized NASA was going to gloss over their role and Thiokol was going to "take one for the team".

Allan took furiously detailed notes immediately following the accident while the exact timeline of events was fresh in his memory.

These later became the basis for his book Truth, Lies, and O-Rings.

I enjoyed Allan McDonald's book far more than I did Gene Kranz's book.

The last chapter of McDonald's book talks about prior to the Columbia accident there were instances of debris impacts to the shuttle orbiter vehicle during launch.

During the initial investigation it was noted one of the boosters was recovered missing a foam fairing. The cold hard stare of blame once again swung toward the boosters. ATK was able to review the video of the booster splashdown and showed the missing fairing had not come off during flight and was jarred loose upon impact with the water.

Happy that the redesigned boosters were not to blame, NASA moved on. MacDonald was astonished that NASA closed the investigation at that point without sufficient answer to where the debris *had* come from.

The next mission was the one in which Columbia was lost.

I should check out his book.

I remember reading quotes for him and others in the room that day.

They fully expected the Challenger to explode on the launchpad. Then it launched, and 73 seconds later...

I can only imagine that emotional rollercoaster

Yeah, he did a ton of stuff. I first remember seeing him in Midnight Run before I ever saw Alien, Homicide, etc. I love that movie.
