I had a client ask me this week, "I guess we're not getting you on-site any time soon, are we..." I was second-guessing myself, thinking "maybe I AM being over-cautious..." but I found myself somewhat vindicated by the cancellation of the TT. "Okay, good, it's not that I'm paranoid or a scaredy-cat who is hiding from his own shadow. A bunch of people whose idea of fun is something that would terrify most people have evaluated the risk and concluded 'this pandemic is too dangerous, we're not risking it' and they're skipping the event that's normally the scary highlight of their scary year. I feel more confident that I'm on the right side of this."

I felt the same way cancelling my attendance at an engineering conference in April, after finding out that SXSW was cancelled. "These guys do ONE event all year, and they've decided not to do it because this disease is too risky. What on earth makes you think doing YOUR event is an okay idea?"

Oh look, more stupid! It's contagious like the rona!

Pennsylvania college forbids on-campus students from leaving campus, president attends off-campus soccer game
The president of Allegheny College is under fire after attending a soccer game off-campus, despite at the time requiring all students remain on campus grounds.
One student even reported the president to the college's coronavirus reporting form.

Cheyenne Frontier Days (world's largest outdoor rodeo) was cancelled this summer. First time in 124 years it was cancelled. And this in a deep, deep red state.

If you're being less cautious then they are, it's not because your judgement is sound while those guys are a bunch of chickenshts, it's because their evaluation is sound and you're fckin' stupid."
Well there's not so many that depend on the TT as their main ride, maybe a handful like McGuinnes and Anstey, the others have rides in BSB or other series so it's just that it's the big show. They did run the Cookstown 100 and Olivers Mount this year so it wasn't killed entirely.

The balance between valuing life and allowing roads racing is debated every year at the TT and the rest of the Irish roadracing season. If that level of soul searching happened with respect to COVID the situation would be much better.

I'm coming around on this masks don't work thing...

https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2...b-article-info

I guess when a mask mandate was instituted in Germany the transmission rate dropped by a mere 45% within 20 days. Hardly seems worth it despite masks costing practically nothing.

We should start an anti-mask religion and use that as an exception from wearing them. I've never seen a god wearing a mask.

We get a (weekly? bi-weekly? when something happens?) email about COVID related stuff at work...pretty sure it goes out to everyone with an @berkeley.edu email address. This was a fun bit of info:

Quote:
The campus has recently detected COVID-19 in University Village wastewater, a UC Berkeley-owned family housing community about three miles from campus, in Albany.

So I'm here in the hospital waiting for a course of remdesivir. I woke up at 3am and couldn't breathe. I went to the emergency room at 10am and I'm still waiting for a room. This should be fun. Like sleep away camp with drugs... so sleep away camp.

Bay Area is going back into "lockdown" mode.
  • Restaurants will close to both indoor and outdoor dining. They can only do takeout or delivery.
  • Bars and wineries have to close (indoor and outdoor).
  • Hair salons, barbershops, nail salons and other personal care services have to close.
  • All retail stores can stay open, but must drop capacity to 20%.
  • Private gatherings of any size will be prohibited.

Starts Monday 12/7 @ 12:01 and ends (tentatively) 1/4.

I had plans to hit up Target tomorrow AM for some general junk...looks like Saturday/Sunday will be a bit more of an extended shopping weekend. Might actually bite the bullet and do that grocery pickup thing...and that is what I'd miss the most, I love just wandering around a grocery store figuring out what I want to cook & eat.

Thanks. I've had 2 negative covid tests so far, but they aren't buying it. CT scan shows inflammation in my lungs so they are treating me like it's covid and want me to retest in a couple days.

Mask use during physical activity

Evidence

There are limited studies on the benefits and harms of wearing
medical masks, respirators and non-medical masks while
exercising. Several studies have demonstrated statistically
significant deleterious effects on various cardiopulmonary
physiologic parameters during mild to moderate exercise in
healthy subjects and in those with underlying respiratory
diseases (134-140). The most significant impacts have been
consistently associated with the use of respirators and in
persons with underlying obstructive airway pulmonary
diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), especially when the condition is moderate
to severe (136). Facial microclimate changes with increased
temperature, humidity and perceptions of dyspnoea were also
reported in some studies on the use of masks during exercise
(134, 141). A recent review found negligeable evidence of
negative effects of mask use during exercise but noted
concern for individuals with severe cardiopulmonary disease
(142).

Guidance

WHO advises that people should not wear masks during
vigorous intensity physical activity (143) because masks may
reduce the ability to breathe comfortably. The most important
preventive measure is to maintain physical distancing of at
least 1 meter and ensure good ventilation when exercising.

If the activity takes place indoors, adequate ventilation should
be ensured at all times through natural ventilation or
a properly functioning or maintained ventilation system
(144). Particular attention should be paid to cleaning and
disinfection of the environment, especially high-touch
surfaces. If all the above measures cannot be ensured,
consider temporary closure of public indoor exercise facilities
(e.g., gyms).
PDF can be found here: https://www.who.int/publications/i/i...cov)-outbreak/

So,if you have an existing respiratory issue, wearing a mask while running could be more immediately harmful to your health than the very slim chance that you'll catch COVID-19 while outside and socially distanced.

The entire rest of the 11 pages leading up to that couple of paragraphs is about how masks ****ing work and you should wear one.. with 171 citations.
