Arizona is open for business. Limit restrictions lifted and mask mandate about to be lifted as well (State House approved).

Let's party!

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I am sure there are a few left wingers who want to see the numbers shoot back up just to prove that this is a bad idea. However, even with a spike, right wingers will never admit that this was a mistake.

My prediction is that not much will happen. Some stores will continue to enforce their mask mandates (which republicans should respect as its their right as a store) and many people will choose to where masks or avoid large crowds of maskless folks. Numbers may increase but not significantly and certainly not in a way that will be indisputable proof. It will drag out the the pandemic and increase the death count, but the people who support opening up don't really care about other people dying anyway.

I liked NDT's response:

Having one state eliminate their mask mandate while everyone else keeps theirs in place is like designating one corner of the public pool as the pee zone.

If only they could be cut off from the rest of the country like their power grid...

Median per capita Covid death rate in U.S.: 1,623 (per 100,000)
#2 New York: 2,493.
#27 Florida: 1,472.

So NY is only 70% higher, no big deal. BTW NY has more active cases, and a higher rate of infection as well.

Why it's almost like Florida took measures to make sure the most vulnerable people were protected, and let healthier individuals decide for themselves. While Cuomo was yakking on TV.

I'm sure most of those deaths happening in NYC, the city with the highest population density in North America, had nothing to do with skewing those numbers.

Sure, Cuomo ****ed up but using those numbers to say "NY sucks, Floriderp is the bestest" is nieve at best, borderline retarded at worst

Ooh, doesn't like facts, whips out insults.

NY probably has around 50% of deaths in nursing homes: I say "probably" because Cuomo's administration falsified the numbers, so stay tuned. According to this site: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/...otals.page#zip. NYC had many deaths: but there were many thousand more outside the city.

As far as NYC vs FL in terms of population density:

Metro Miami 6.1 million
Metro Tampa 3.1 million
Metro Orlando 2.5 million
Metro Jacksonville 1.5 million

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...eas_of_Florida

NY does suck. Thry have the second-highest death rate in the country (NJ #1, MA #3).

Another example. Massachusetts, like New York, made a series of errors in dealing with group homes. Washington state is similar in population. Washington's death rate is roughly one quarter (28%) that of Massachusetts. CA has the largest number of active cases, by far: but their death rate is a little over half NY.

Florida is full of Florida Man. But when it comes to protecting people from dying of Covid, CA and FL and Washington did much better than NJ, NY, MA, etc.

New York, New Jersey, and MA have a few big disadvantages. Those states got hit with the first real punch. The lessons learned in their hospitals saved lives in other states. Secondly those states have very little sunlight which decreases vitamin D and sunlight also kills the virus out doors. There also seems to be a genetic disadvantage Italians have with Covid which may hurt the demographics of the North East Coast especially hard. Lastly while population density state wide is similar between those states NY, NJ, & MA crowds together in high rise buildings and subways while the other is spread out over suburbs.

Thus:

That image is more telling than the density statistic state to state. Obviously Americas biggest Covid spike was going to happen where the biggest density spike occurred. The bat like environments and the fact that they were the Guinee Pig for the nation the political mistakes and the probably genetic disadvantages New York, New Jersey, and MA made things worse but if you put New Yorkers in say Hawaii their survival rates would have dramatically increased.

Its easy for the Southern states to lift the restrictions, they are heading into their best weather and the vaccine is taking the edge off. Hopefully they don't create a variant which is resistant to the vaccine and sunlight or else they will see New York's numbers.

What really killed NY and NJ other than the density was the fact that while we were all discussing the first few cases on the west coast it was already spreading around the NYC metro like wildfire. It was like Chernobyl- with the knowledge and the tools immediately on hand we were under a certain impression about the extent of the issue and what the worst case might be. If we had the right tools immediately we would have realized that it was far, far beyond the worst case we could imagine. If NY could have known what was happening at the point that cases were progressing past 1k a day we could have likely gotten a lid on it. I'm not even sure what the true infection rate at the peak would have been since there is literally no data and testing was so slow to ramp that we were likely in the post lockdown downswing by the time we had data meaningful enough to extrapolate.

Psst... that's population. Not density.

Miami metro population density: 1,004.8/sq mi
NY metro population density: 5,318/sq mi

On just 31 sq mi land, Manhattan has more people than 3 of those 4 Florida metro.

... but yeah, this is totally on Cuomo's suckiness and DeSantis' greatness. Nothing else

Took my dad to get his first jab yesterday. They did not have any extras for me, even as an essential employee

Despite what an unbelievable ****show it was to GET the appointment, the drive-through clinic at the Portland Airport was absolutely on rails. Very well laid out and very well run. Really impressive. Dad said it reminded him a lot of lining up for the Polio vaccine.

Teacher wife got her second stab on Friday (Pfizer). After the first stab, she was a little run-down feeling for a few hours, but recovered pretty well. After the second one, she was worse off for about 36 hours....headache, mild nausea, mild flu-like symptoms. By Sunday, she was fine.

Of course, though, the day before her second stab, 3 kids in her classroom tested positive, so she's WFH until early next week per school district protocols. Snip-snap, snip-snap, snip-snap.

Just got my Moderna shot at Kaiser... doing my 15 minute observation now.

Nicely run operation here... efficient and friendly. One quasi-interesting thing is all the "older" peeps I see here are getting Phizer shots, us "younger" ones are all getting Moderna. I've no clue why.

My guess is: Moderna seems to have more severe side affects.

At work several people were down for a day after our 2nd Moderna shots (about 10% of our dept., not sure the stats for the entire organization). I had mild symptoms the next day and they were gone about 4 hours after waking up.

My wife got her second moderna shot last week and was out of commission for about the same amount of time. Same symptoms as you mentioned. Bonus, her lymph nodes in her neck and underarm on the side she got the shot in also got very swollen and painful during that time. Day three, she was pretty much back to normal.

My youngest daughter got randomly selected for the J&J vaccine from an online site she found. vaccineconnector.mn.gov

She had about 12-18 hours of crappy feels then all good.

My parents got their second Moderna shot mid last week. Slightly less side effects compared to the first shot.
