Just had an absolute collapse during try outs for our local company tourney.
Back Story: My Topgolf plays the best 12 players against another local Topgolfs top 12 for a Ryder Cup style event twice a year. Since my first tryout invite I've made the cut 3 times, and been exempt from tryouts the last 3. My worst performance in tourney netted us 2.5 points out of 4. So I'm undefeated for my class. This year, losing 1 Topgolf and gaining 2 more and with Covid, it became a 3 way match of 8 players each. I have to try out again.

I'm a 14, playing with a 12 and a pair of 18s. I chose to be the only walker in the group to focus. Front 9 I'm the calm center of their chaotic universe. They're left and right and long and short. I'm Fairway, I'm greenside, I'm chipping and putting. 1 double with a bad putt, and a birdie on 8, I'm teeing off on 9 at 6 over. Good for me.
Then on 9.... as I started my backswing my driver clips a tee left in the ground. I looked at the tee that I just hit and yet still went thru with my drive. The result was a ball deep in the trees 10 yards ahead and to the left. Now I'm on a 420 yard par 4 hitting 3 out of the box. I wound up with an 8. Same topped shot on 10, finished with a 7. Got my driver back but lost all ability inside of 120 yards. Missed greens, yipps while chipping, and couldn't come close with the putter. Doubles and triples all the way in.
Im on the 18th box with a 94 on my card. I know 100 is the max to possibly get in, staring down a par 5 with water guarding the green. Got a hold of my drive but left rough. I wedged out to the fairway planning on about 150. I miss judged the distance to the water, and now I'm 180 out. My partner his a 3 wood for his second to clear the water and be green side. The other 2 were just behind me and went for it. As I'm lining up my 6i we realize the group in front hadn't putted yet. So I'm alone in the fairway, group behind me waiting for me, waiting for them to putt out. Forever. I had 4 shots to put this in the hole to pray for a spot.
Finally the green clears and all 11 people are greenside waiting for me. I catch hosel on the ball below my feet and put it in the water right of the green. I just walked past the green and right to the parking lot.

It happens. This is my first season with a pretty much new full bag. I went ham precovid and got addicted to fittings. It started with an iron fitting, then a putter fitting, and then driver. Surprisingly the driver fitting had me keep my old head and just slapped a $400 shaft on it. After the iron fitting of course I had to get new wedges to fill in the new gaps. I'm still not settled with my irons and the fact that they're 2* up makes me horrified of downhill lies. Right now I just can't hit anything below my feet.

Played Sunday with two buddies I play very often with and one good friend I haven't played with in a year or two. I think I might have been trying a bit too hard to a) impress my friend that I have progressed in the game some and b) trying to beat my best score at this course from playing about a month prior.

Started off pretty well with couple bogeys and pars, 5th hole hit 176yd 5i which landed green about 3ft from the pin and rolled to 10" from the cup for a tap in birdie. a few other bogeys on the front but no doubles. so was doing ok. 10th is a par 5, I made double. ok not too terrible of a start on the back, lets shake it off. 11th is a par 3 over a ravine, I promptly duffed my tee shot straight into the bushes at the bottom of the ditch. tee up second ball, hit back of green and ended up 3 putting for a triple. ugh.
12th is another "over the ravine" tee shot to a dogleg left fairway, it's the one we call the nemesis, one of the more difficult holes and I think it was messing with my head because I put 2 more balls OB with my 2i, changed to 3w and flew to the fringe of the OB on the dogleg, had to punch out to the fairway, flubbed my chip onto the fringe, but managed to 2 putt for a 9. and it went downhill from there. another triple and a few more doubles. ended up being my worst round in about 2 years. Oh well.

I hate this game but looking forward to the next round in a couple weeks.

Sucks man but that's golf right?

I am just trying to get a little practice in every other day so I can keep the meager skills that I have. I have been hitting shanks which is something I never do. I just worked on slowing down my swing again which has helped but now I am not hitting it a good 5-10 yards shorter.

Was all worth it for that 176yds shot to tap in birdie on 5.

I really need to get more range time in. The only time I've hit the range all year is to knock out a small bucket before the round. Any with my schedule being as hectic as it is, I'm only getting out for a round once a month if I'm lucky.

2021 early resolution is to play much more golf.

Really nice that green may look bit soft but, that's a nice strike to pull it back from that far out.

You mean 2 degrees down? Sounds like something ain't lining up/right. Sounds like you got your head on straight (figuratively) with the round commentary. Do you ever film your swing? Maybe I'll have to give my local topgolf a try.

Nice! That would do it for me too.

You can always hit me up to play more with my brother and cousin. Going to Mile Square in OC on Sunday.

2* toe up on the new sticks. Totally killed my fade. With the toe being up addressing a ball below your feet sloping away from you can really get into your head.
As far as my swing, we have 3 PGA instructors at TG. We're always hitting balls at work (Testing the new Angry birds game) or even just a quick pick up round on a virtual course. I'm usually on a golf course with them twice a month at least. They don't offer advice unless you either ask, or as related to your question... they see a glaring flaw and will get out the camera. Joey is leaving us and I'll miss his "Why the heck you doing that?" approach to giving swing advice.
I know what my flaws are, and at my age they're pretty grooved and hard to beat. I have floating hands and too much wrist action and slow hips and low flexibility. Going from the black dot i15's to basically a green dot i500 (club Champion bends black dots) added a ton of forgiveness and distance, but at 1/4 long I'm catching a lot of heels. I'll catch at least 1 good shank a per round.

Nope. Just fill it all in here and I'm curious to hear! (I saw you on GWRX and surprised you didn't respond, didn't think I offended....)

WHAT'S IN THE BAG!??! You're poisting about them, without saying what they are!!

Also, what's going on with the Callaway thingie? Are they going to replace the booth clubs with callaways?

Also, good deal on the better handicap and just playing to your swing. We all get it. And nice to see you here. This is one of the few threads that I still participate in here.

The Callaway thing I really have no idea. I've been off since Monday and don't go back until Friday, so I assume I'll hear then? But yeah, Callaway just picked up a $2B golf entertainment network. Our clubs now are a Callaway design licensed out to X for cheap manufacture. They're not made by callaway. I'm pretty certain Butt to Toe each club is sub $10.

My WITB... Feb 18th I walked into Club Champion for a fitting. I had fallen in love with the i500's, but was leaning towards the Haywoods. If you're not familiar with Haywood, click here:
. I had emailed Haywood and the owner replied to me at 2AM to tell me to see how I hit the G710s as a comparison. All things considered with them being a start up and the 50% savings.. I couldn't hit the 710s. Of course having lusted over the 500's for 2 years they would turn out to be the best head for me. Hit everything in the shop. The 500's were hands down the best head for my swing.
I've since been back to the shop for a putter and driver fitting in the last few months. I know it seems I'm a fanboi, but this is almost all from from fittings..

Putter, fitted: 2020 Bettinardi BB1 Flowneck.

Wedges: Ping Tour 60* // Haywood 56* bent to 54* // Sub70 48* - Both natural, both rusted amazingly.

Irons, fitted: Ping i500 4-PW. 2* up (green dot but not because CC only does Black and does the adjustment themselves) with C-Taper shafts +.25 length. Ordered with "grips in the box" so I could grip them myself. Logo 10* right, 4X low 1X high tape. Also, shaft stickers in the box. I get the value but hate them, so they're all on the under carriage of the shaft.

Hybrid: Ping G30 19*. Nicknamed the murderer. With my high ball flight this is a low, get the heck out of anything club. It came with a PX 6.5 that was too much for me, so I've got a Fuji R shaft in her. I can hit this out of any crap and it goes low and long and runs forever.

3W: Gen 1 RBZ @13*. We call this the Franken-three. Day before a tourney my coworker and I decided to cut it 1/4". He was showing me how to do it and I wound up cracking the shaft in the vice. We went to the Topgolf lost and found to see what we could do and settled on an Adams 5H stiff. Once settled this club wound up so short... but amazing workable. In the past year we've taken a broken shaft from TG and inserted, epoxy'd, taped and gripped it. It's still not as long as it should be, but still a good hitter.

Driver, fitted: Ping G30. I started with a Fuji 565. I went in for a fitting and determined the head was at the top of my game, but went with a Mitsu Diamana BF shaft. The fitter and I disagreed on being Stiff vs Reg, so he agreed to let me go R, but cut the shaft at the tip to stiffen it up more.

Wow.. that was wordy.
Bag: Ping J bag.
Ball: Titleist Pro soft
Shoes: Foot Joy Classic Saddle

So... what are we all hitting?

I'm sure they're better than my pop's old leather grip Hogans. Those things are tough to get a good shot from.

My clubs are all ten plus years old. Still, Titleist woods, irons and, putter,(cameron) Cleveland wedges and, an answer spare putter. (I don't go above 14)

So... what are we all hitting?
I'll play - I'm currently a 2 index, although that will be going up to 4 or so very quickly....

Driver: Taylormade M6 w/ the HZDRS Smoke Black shaft in X-stiff. Probably the most happy I have ever been with a driver. I've learned to hit this consistent 10 yard cut with it on command.

3w: 2016 Taylormade M2 w/ a graffloy red X-stiff shaft.. it's also cut down a 1/2 inch. This thing is basically a mini driver for me. I keep wanting to replace it but I just hit it so well.

Hy: Titleist 816h 21*. Not sure on the shaft but it fits perfectly into my 235-245 yard slot.

Irons: 4i-pw Callaway CF-16 Apex with the Nippon Modus 125x shafts. I got fitted for these at HotStix Golf. They are a serious fitting experience. The shafts are all tour issue and they pured them to ensure swing weighting is appropriate after they were built. For the most part, they all have a little lead in the tip of the shaft. I've never hit more consistent feeling irons in my life.

Wedges: Titleist SM6 (50*, 54*, 58*). These are in the Tour Raw finish so they rusted up great and were customized through Wedge Works. I have varying grinds and bounces to give me options in the varying desert conditions. My 58* has 4* of bounce for super firm summer conditions and my 54* has 12* of bounce for when things are softer.

Putter: This is a standing rotation for me lol. Right now, I am back to my Odyssey Tour Designs Black Series #8 (which is the 8802 style putter). My primary is a Scotty Cameron Circa 62 #2 which was customized through Scotty's Custom Shop. That, however, is very much in timeout right now LOL

My buddy who's pretty serious (He's moving to Charlotte to take over as Director of instruction @ Topgolf there) has a funny theory about rotating putters. If his gamer isn't playing well he puts a new putter in the trunk to make it jealous. If she's still acting up he'll put it in the bag. He's got 7 putters but never has to game the other 6.

Nice, that's pretty close to my place but I've yet to play there. Let me know how it goes.
Wife & I are going camping this weekend in Joshue Tree. I might bring an old 56* and practice some "bunker" shots.

I get it but still, seems a bit extreme.

I just make sure never to use my Cameron if the greens are fast enough.

Balls sail off that thing compared to my Answer. Also, I love my double thick grips on my putters, Made a much bigger difference than I thought.

Also, real golfers have a bit of oxidation in the bag.

One theory I heard about new putters is that when you try a new one, you put more effort into properly addressing the ball, so it feels like the new putter is helping where as you are just more focused on address than you normally are. Shrugs.

My philosophy on the putters is I have 2, but they are COMPLETELY different. A Scotty Newport 1.5, and a Tour Spider which I game 95% of the time. 2 completely different putters with completely different feels.

That is how I reset.

haha I love it.

I have 5 putters. Since the start of 2020 (im in phoenix so that's a year long golf season), I have used 4 of them.... Here's what I have:

#1 Scotty Cameron Circa 62 #2 -- I've had this thing since maybe 2008 or 09. I bought it used for $125 but have sunk money into it having it sent back to Scotty. This thing is my baby girl. She gets most of the rounds and typically stays in the back for long periods of time. The only issue I have with it is how light it is. I have 2 3 or so inch long strips of lead tape on the sole to bring the head weight up. I love it on fast greens

#2 Scotty Cameron Special Select Newport #2.5 -- This is the new Cameron. I bought it in March, used it most of the summer with good results but have it on the sideline for now. Its the same exact head shape as my other cameron but its much heavier, better weighted and has deep milling on the face. I really love the putter (and had my 3 personal best rounds with it) but it just ran cold... it'll be back in the bag soon im sure.

#3 Odyssey Tour Designs Black Series #9 -- This is the Del Mar style mid-mallet putter. I bagged this thing for like 2 seasons and loved it. I can really feel the toe open and close through the ball. I love everything about it except for the fact that I can't putt worth a damn with it now LOL

#4 Odyssey Tour Designs Black Series #8 -- The old 8802 design. Its currently in the bag now but it's typically my last resort. I used it on and off for like 4 seasons prior to the #9 and had great results with it. I put it away and kind of never touched it again... until 2 weeks ago. Ive been putting great with it. It forces me to really focus on my stroke because the mi****s provide so much feedback.

#5 Bettinardi BB40 -- This is really my only true mallet putter. It comes out when I'm at rock bottom. I love it from inside 10 feet. I loathe it outside of 10 feet.

Thats pretty much my rotation. It would say the Circa 62, my baby girl, is the putter I will always have and likely always go back to. She's just being a little hoe right now so she's in timeout.

In my 30 years golfing I've owned 3 putters. An Anser style Arnies Own that was handed down to me when I first started golfing. Years later I switched to an STX Sync Tour. After 1 season that putter was stolen and I went back to the Arnie. A few years ago I found another STX ST in a pawn shop and it became my gamer again. Now the BB1f has made me toss both of those.

Back to my Cally Fusion, with 65g HZRDUS yellow after breaking my Rogue and the SubZero Epic Flash just wasn't working and was returned.

Cally Rogue 3w with a 75g HZRDUS Yellow.
Cally Rogue 3H also, with an Evenflow black.
TM RBZ 4H (this is my get out of everything club too, oldest club in the bag).
Irons are Mizuno JPX EZ Forged 4-PW with KBS TourV 120s.
Wedges are 50/56 Vokey SM8s (new this year) and a Cally 64* PM Grind MD3.

I have always rolled an Odyssey #7. Old solid face, White hot, and have had the MetalX Milled #7 since it came out and can do no wrong with it. I have tried other putters, and just cannot get into them, have even gone to a fitter that said "wouldn't change a thing".

Last round of golf today here in HHI. Atlantic Dunes with some rain. A lot of rain. Started on the 6th, and well we (wife and I) got so drenched, when we made the turn, we almost called it quits and decided we were already soaked, we'd tough it out. Turned out the right call. Took 2.5 hrs for the front, but 1.5 ithe back because everyone else quit. LOL and on/off rain. Just as we finished 18 and got back to the club house, the horn blew due to thunder/lightning in the area. https://www.facebook.com/613262568/v...8049975632569/

Going to try and get out a few more times this year, but looks like my HDCP will end up at 11 as home will be inactive season starting on the 1st. Will get out when I can, but will be switching to indoor golf with the guys to tide me over.
