Yes, looks like it. You'll be paying him to install a second box, too.

If there's any question, it's electrician time.

IIRC electricians aren't allowed to completely fill a box. They have to leave at least one space open.
Also, it's something you definitely don't want to do yourself, so if you're paying somebody, might as well get the subpanel now so then you can add circuits yourself in the future. |

Where is there space on that panel? I don't see any. I see unlabeled breakers, but no space.

Not really worried about 200A, unless he is running all of those major appliances at once. |

I noticed he already has some piggy-backed (small 2-pole) breaker in there. |

Yeah, was thinking the easy win is doing those skinny doubles for that stack of kitchen appliance breakers and then stuff a sub-panel off the free space made.

You have tons of service, and don't need a sub, but- as a former electrician- you should just have a pro do it. Is the load in the same room as the panel? It shouldn't be expensive, I'd use an offset 1/2" stub, a 4 11/16 box and plate, and three feet of thhn #10, and a suitable receptacle if this is a cord and plug installation, but of course I wouldn't do that as I'm currently unlicensed. They will have the two "mini" double 15a single pole breakers and the 25 or 30a double pole in their truck, although they may not have the right brand... (See below)
2k2- Electricians will leave open breakers for a number of reasons, the most common being that somebody smashed too many blanks off the panel cover and now they need to fill the hole, and don't have panel cover blanks. Iirc, it's legal to leave them in but they had to be labeled. However, OP, your panel has already lost its UL approval: like breakers with like panels- breakers are approved with their panels, and you have a mix of cutler and Siemens stuff. Cutler, ge, Murray, Siemens and a few others will fit (and are oft rumored to be "made in the same factory") but technically tank the UL rating, which means it's not at code. Nobody ever cares but I thought you'd want to know at least for trivia sake. Panels bite hard, I luckily don't know first hand, but there's no greater opportunity for severe, debilitating electrical shock in the home than messing about in the panel. Please call the pros! (Do you have a family or roomates?) |

Oh, so this is how it feels when people talk about computers to me.
Your compressor needs a 230/240volt circuit with 30 amp breaker. Do you have any other items you want to power? Is it in a shop or garage? The sub panel is an easy way to expand your current one. You run a wire from the main panel to another location (shed/garage) then install the sub panel which will have a handful of breaker in it. How much power the sub panel can handle is limited by the available power left over in your main panel and the size wire you pull. Most people will do a 60amp sub panel with 4-6 breakers in it to power tools, compressor, outlets. It's common with sheds and garages because then you're not running 4-6 wires out to the shed, just 1...also, it puts the breakers closer to the point of use which is safer and more convenient. Meh, that's an easy job. I would do it.
You can move the dual 15 on the bottom right to the bottom left. Then you would have two adjacent spots for the double 30 you need (looks like the breaker for the dryer). Or, as others have suggested, install a double 60 and put a sub in the garage. Just sucks pulling heavy gauge cable and/or installing conduit (not sure if necessary). |

Got my first estimate for my garage addition. It was not realistic for a garage. Guessing it was a non bid.
