Does anybody remember the post, that I thought was on here, about the guy who bought an attic fan to reduce his cooling costs? I think he got a solar panel to power it?

I rent a 5 bedroom house in the SF bay area and it has no HVAC and the wiring is so poor that the circuits blow when we just run computers sometimes, so its not capable of running a portable air conditioner. Nor do I really need it, its just hot sometimes here.

I have an attic above four rooms that has small 3"x12" vents around the house. On a hot day I'll come into my room an it will be 90 degrees inside even with one window fan blowing in and one blowing out. I noticed the ceiling was the hottest wall. One wall is west facing, and one is south.

I'm looking for ideas to help cool it down more. Once the evening comes our temperatures outside cool down substantially, but my room stays warm throughout the night.

I thought an attic fan would help, but I don't have a gable vent (GIS link) so if I do put in a fan it would have to be a small one for one of those small 3"x12" vents but I feel that won't do much.

Any ideas? Moving is an obvious choice but rent is damn cheap here and everywhere else with the options I have cost double.

New stuffs for the home:

12A wired electric mower, since the "80V" (72V) one I tried from Lowe's was terrible. 12A @ 120V should be much more power and there are no batteries to run out of juice.

Honeywell Redlink gateway. Should let me change the temperature from an iPhone app, which is all I really want to do. I already figured out how to get into the installer mode screen on the thermostat (code is on back of the unit) and this just plugs into an Ethernet jack on the router/my house's network.

These above are en route. The below are saved for later, assuming I don't get infuriated by dragging a 100' 12/3 extension cord about:

These run off of the same 18V LXT batteries as the impact driver and drill I have.

For the winter. I have two outlets on the porch so figure I could leave this plugged in on the porch all winter (with a cable lock from the handle to the porch railing). I'm obligated by law and decency to clear my front steps and the sidewalk in front of the house. No such obligation for the driveway in the rear so I plan to do jack squat as long as my Nokian-shod vehicles can surmount its perhaps 5% grade .

1) Carbon. I have 0 carbon electricity (wind credits when from the utility, solar on my roof).

2) Noise. I have young kids and don't have to work around their schedules.

3) Not having to keep a small container of gas around, what with the smell and the hunt for no ethanol or using treatments.

I took care of my parents 1/2 acre lot with a corded trimmer when I was a kid. You couldn't pay me enough to use corded yard tools now, unless the lot is postage-stamp sized. I don't currently WANT battery tools, but I do understand them. Corded? Gfy. Corded snow blower? The kind of snow I can imagine that handling would go just as fast and easy with a nice shovel.

Corded power >> cordless.

That battery mower I had used 144 Wh batteries and lasted about 20 minutes if that. Even at 15 minutes that's an average power of 576 W.

The corded one pulls 12A at 120V... QED.

Why is everyone so afraid of ethanol? We've had e10 for years in CA. No problems with my old or new equipment.

I don't think 18-20v is enough for the trimmer/blower. I'd check out the 40V ryobi setup a home depot. The blower is quite good. String trimmer....still prefer my echo.

Electric makes sense when houses are stacked on top of one another with .17 acre lots.

I think the gas thing is non-issue. for a trimmer and blower a gallon or even half gallon of fuel will get you months in a small yard, a sealed small can doesn't smell really, or just buy the premix stuff for a small amount more...

the noise thing I get though, with the kids and neighbors and stuff.

As far as the carbon issue...well whatever. My mom has a half acre lot or so...she insisted on having electric this and that. She had some battery powered mower. She used it for a couple of seasons ....then got rid of it, got a nice gas self propelled and she says she wouldn't go back...

You couldn't pay me to use an electric mower. I saw a guy using an electric mower and had industrial grade ear protection on. I was laughing so hard.

There's mowers going in my neighborhood all day every day. The kids aren't phased at all by a mower.

As for the gas, I've never once looked at what gas I am using and my mower is still going strong 7 years in. Sealed can and there's no smells anywhere. I like the smell of unleaded gas anyhow.

Qed my ass, that's under 2hp. I don't think you can even buy a gas model that makes less than twice that.

Masculinity aside, my friend has a little over a 1/8 acre lot and loves his corded mower.

Corded stuff SUCKS. Not only are they nowhere near as powerful, they're just a PITA being attached. I finally filled up my 2gal gas can yesterday after, I wanna say, 3 months or so.

<<Mowed the lawns while his kid was asleep yesterday. *gasp*

I'll take gas powered over corded all day long. Battery powered works well in some situations like impact drivers or drills but not well for mowers or tasks that require sustained usage.

Gas mower, leaf blower, snow blower and after a few months if I think the gas is going off i'll stick the remaining half gallon or so into an almost full tank of gas in the car.

Ever tried using corded hedge trimmers? Its a real pleasure trying to not cut the cord

I've got the Ryobi 40v string trimmer. It's....okay. Claims it performs like gas are exaggerated.

If I had it to do over I'd have opted for a nice 4stroke.

It's convenient, and it does the job. But I'm not blown away by it.

If you use a corded mower, start nearest the outlet and work away from it. That way you won't run over the cord.

I have my doubts about the "6.5 hp" rating system that Home Depot and others employ. I also acknowledge that a nice Honda would work better. This electric one was all of $130 as a Gold Box deal on Amazon, though (+ a $45 100' 12/3 extension cord ) so I'll give it a shot. If it also sucks I clearly have no qualms about returning ****.

Washing machine is on the fritz. It has started to not empty and sounds like it is trying to pump but has stuck. I put a new clutch into it a couple of years ago and then it needed a new timer switch which kept it going for a another year. Im thinking it may be time to just get a new one as its 7 or 8 years old. Any recommendations? Want a basic top loader with a big tub.
