You'll want more than a 16'. I had/have a 20' and with my SM and all the spares it was pretty packed. However that was with a foot and a half worth of cabinets/work bench in the front. I wouldn't go any smaller than a 20 with 22-24 being ideal I would say.

I'm not racing... just doing HPDE. I currently have an 18' dovetail open trailer... it's plenty big for the Miata.

So sure, I'd want an 18'-20' enclosed trailer, but with around 40' of parking space, an 18' box means a trailer over 20' overall length... leaving less than 20' for a camper. I'm pretty sure an RV with under 20' total length would suck... it'd have to be a converted E350 or something, at best.

So yeah, I'd rather trade away some trailer length to be able to fit a trailer and an RV in my back yard. The alternative is a large toy-hauler, or trailer + a truck-bed camper. The toy hauler is likely bigger than I want for camping, and my non-dually truck is too small for the weight of a slide-in plus an enclosed trailer.

They are made to fit in a standard garage, you sure it won't fit?

Anywho, the A-frames are really neat and certainly an improvement over the typical pop up.

Yea, our garage door only 7 ft tall and the exterior height of the smallest Scamp on their site is 7'6". If I would have caught the camper bug before we bought this house a few months ago, I would have looked for a taller garage.

There are some pop-ups with rigid tops. My buddy's old Apache has no canvas, assuming that's your wife's issue with them.

Looking into it, Apache was one of the few to ever make them like that. They're all over 30 years old at this point, but if age isn't a big deal to you (ie: you aren't afraid of a little resto), they're a good alternative to a standard towed camper.

Well, it's that time of year again....

Last fall after finishing the major work on the attic I found the rear had sprung a pretty nasty leak. Originally I was going to replace the whole roof, but on the account of I don't feel like it this year, I'm going to buy some eternabond tape for the seams and reseal the roof. Here are some of the before pics from the front:

No finished pics, because its not finished beyond being weathertight yet. Lets just say most of the wood in that corner was rotted and needed to be rebuilt.

Here's my set up. It's a 2004 Jayco Qwest 10SG. I have a Thule rack on top with 2 trays, and power everything with a Honda 2000 inverter (whisper quiet). I don't have air, so we'll see how that goes this July at Raystown Lake.

I'm looking at getting a camper to tow with a pickup, but I have no idea what to pay for it. I'm assuming it's like buying a car, but does anyone know what kind of negotiation room there is?

MSRP is $30,567 and is advertised at $21,163

so offer $3.50?

What's this? RV thread? That's funny, I was thinking of searching for a thread the other day, but I'm actually in my 29' class C right now. We just got it a few weeks ago and have already gone out more than we did in the previous year with our popup. You think setting up a tent in the dark is bad? Try one of those. I imagine an A-frame is quite a bit better though.
Mine's a '94 in really nice shape: dry, everything works, and actually nice looking rather than '90s turquoise. I struggled to keep my composure when the dealer said he only wanted $6500 for it. I didn't even bother negotiating. No pictures because I'm on my phone and I make it difficult enough as it is when I'm using a PC.
However, I love upny's comments about the 460... Yeah. That.

I think this exact rv featured a prominent role in "prisoners"

I took it up into the mountains over Labor Day weekend, and I had a line of cars behind me at nearly all times.

We're in central PA at the bottom of a hill that's a few miles worth of climbing. I'm going to make sure it's good and warmed up before we head out of here. Dis gon be good.

Nice job. I always dread doing any kind of construction on an RV or travel trailer, because it's not like you can just slap up a bunch of 2x4s and drywall.

I'm headed out to a state park this weekend, and I'm really glad I have a furnace now. For that matter, solid walls are a definite plus. We had 3-4" of snow this morning.

Yeah, it's been a trip. The trick is, the more rotted the wall, the easier it comes apart. One more crunchy wall and I'm finished.

Wat. Do you have a house too?

Oh man, crunchy walls. Just like Nature Valley bars. Sure, they come apart easily, but it's a matter of putting them back together. I'm curious, just what kind of materials does one use to reassemble that kind of thing? Anything other than fiberglass, pressboard, and 1/8" paneling?

I've been kicking around the idea of buying a travel trailer. I'm a noob to the RV scene and I was hoping OT could help me with a few questions.

What's the deal with white/gray/black water tanks? I'm guessing that means drinking water (white), ??? water (gray), and poop water (black)?

Is it possible that all three of these tanks could be full at the same time? I've noticed that a lot of the TT's I've been looking at have 30/30/30 gallons of white/gray/black; if those were all full that would be 750+ pounds of water and would represent a significant portion of the TT's GVWR?

Does the black tank include poop and pee? Seems that every flush would take at least a quarter (pee) to a half (poop) a gallon of water per flush. So if I have a 30 gallon black tank I can only flush about 100 times before I need to have the black tank pumped? With a family of four I would go through 100 flushes pretty quick, I guess we should poop at the Wal-Marts and McDonalds we find along the interstate? My apologies for all the poop questions

My TV's GCWR minus curb weight is about 5600 lbs. I figure 800 pounds in passengers/cargo in the TV, which suggest I should be looking for a TT with a GVWR around 4500 lbs? The rear GAWR on my truck is about 1000 lbs less than the empty vehicle load, so there should be no issue with tongue weight up to the hitch's maximum (500 lbs, which would put about 625 lbs on the rear axle according to my calculations). Is there any website that allows you to sort TT's from different manufacturers based on GVWR? I haven't found one... Most TT's seem to be designed for lightweight TV's (GVWR < 3500 lbs) or heavyweight TV's (GVWR > 7500).

Is there a commonly accepted relationship between TT size and how long of a road trip you can stomach? I've been leaning towards a high teens to low twenty foot TT based on my TV; would it be unreasonable to attempt a month long trip around the contiguous US with that size TT (after some smaller weekend and week-long trips of course)?

Thanks for all your assistance OT.

Correct.

I usually haul my own water from home because campground water can be of questionable quality. Once I'm ready to leave, I dump it to save weight. Campgrounds generally have dumping stations so you can get rid of the black/gray water. You'll never forget your first dumping station experience...let's just suffice it to say that people are animals.

Most RV parks have bathroom/ shower facilities for the people who aren't self contained. Mine is limited to nighttime use and when I don't feel like walking. No poops either, you're just asking for trouble and extra work once you get into solid matter and toilet paper.

Want. Only 250 imported into the US, so finding them is very difficult. I've been kicking around the idea of living like a modern day Uncle Rico at least during the summer, and something like that seems like a great solution as far as being able to park almost anywhere and having maximum living space. It has all the amenities of a larger unit, the only drawback is that the refrigerator is powered off the batteries.
