His Dark Materials (HBO)
If you remember that movie The Golden Compass, it was based on the same novels.

I was in at HBO+BBC, the fact it is more of the golden compass material/world is great. Both my kids are going to want to watch this with me.
Hopefully someone will bump this in the fall when the series premiers. |

Did we have another thread where we're talking about this? Another streaming thread or the Watchmen thread because it's also HBO?
This started off a bit slow, the first two episodes were a snooze for me, but Ep 3 picked up, and Ep 4 finally has me hooked in. |

A very quiet and underrated series. Throughly enjoying it from the get go.

Crap, I didn't even realize this had started, and it's 3 episodes in...
I'm a big fan of the books, and hope this does more credit to them than the 2007 movie adaptation. That movie wasted a wonderful cast on diluted garbage... |

My daughter is reading the books. Is this show suitable for kids, or is it more GOT?

I would say just PG, I can't point to anything I would not let my 7yo watch as long as I was there? She is pretty bright and terrifyingly knowledgeable for her age, but even the slow ones should get it.

I was excited the first 3 episodes or so, but it's losing my interest now.

I think it's picking up nicely after episode 3, personally.
The show seems to suffer a bit from "ZOMG we have to make the next Game of Thrones! Throw everything at the wall!" It's a complicated story, with magic and multiple worlds and a background of political fighting, and they're trying to drop us into the middle of that world. For some things they tell us with outright exposition what's going on, for other things they show us. I'm a big fan of "show me" in these series, personally. Show me the world, show me what the rules are, don't just tell me. But between the Gyptians and the Gobbers and the Magisterium and the various other peoples and factions it's a lot to soak up at once. So... entertain me along the way. Lin Manuel Miranda showing up is a big help to that. I'll sit and happily let the story flow when I'm enjoying his antics. |

I feel like they are spending too much time dragging out the "point" and they don't have the same type of interesting filler as other shows. I felt like in some of these episodes what they show us in an hour they can cut in half. Compare to other shows, like good GOT, good Westworld, or Watchmen, there's enough going on elsewhere that's interesting to fill in the gaps. Last week they spent more time in the "modern" world which was a nice change of pace, then the time they spent there this week was minimal and really did not advance anything. What was the point... |

I love the books. Literally my favorite series. I do not love this show. The pacing is awful.

Yes, I'm familiar with "The Golden Compass." It is a fantasy film released in 2007, directed by Chris Weitz and based on the novel "Northern Lights" by Philip Pullman. rice purity test
