Default Considering dropping cable TV completely.

Accidentally went late on 2 months payment due to automated payment using a credit card number that expired. We were in a 2 year contract for phone/net/hdtv. I paid the bill yesterday morning and yesterday afternoon our phone got cut off. The number went back into the general pool of available numbers and was lost forever. Fortunately I went to Verizon and got it back through them.
So now Charter wants $125 for early termination because we no longer have phone with them. I told them to pound sand. Our bill went up from $109 with everything to $135 for just TV and internet.

I think it's time to drop TV and keep internet and get everything online. Netflix for $9.99, internet for $44.99 and phone for $42.99 is what I'd end up paying. At some point Charter will no doubt send me offers through the mail to return as a customer and I'll likely pick it back up when I see a deal I like.

So for those that have dropped cable TV completely, what's it like? What do you miss? Is this a good idea with a 3 year old who likes most of what the Nick channels show?

I thought about doing the same thing but I would miss watching the Flyers and Phillies too much.

Having no TV is great. I get a ton more done, and use hulu/torrents for the few shows I do watch. I wouldn't want my 3 year old becoming dependent on tv for stimulation anyway. Don't forget you can throw up an HD antenna (and an HTPC to record if you want to get all jiggy) and get you locals clearer than with cable as well.

Better question is why do you need a home phone?

it looks to me like they terminated the account prematurely, not you.

had they contacted you when the payment failed to process the first time, you would have been able to correct the issue sooner.

you sent payment anyway and now they expect you to bend over while they **** you over... **** that ****

Wife wants one. She says with a kid is stupid to not have one encase of emergency.

GF needs TV, I guess. I'd love to get rid of all those redundent channels. We have the premium channels, which is retarded, because we also have Netflix and like 4 systems that can stream Netflix to our TV.

Yeah after our contract with DirecTV is up, we are likely going to cancel. I am going to hook up a couple of those little Western Digital media boxes to my TVs, and upgrade our internet speed, as well as add Netflix.

The TV just isn't worth the extra $100 a month. I'll get the locals from antenna, and the rest I can get online. There might be a handful of shows we watch.

We went without for a year and it was fine. We would watch movies at home, and sporting events over the neighbors if it was something important. I still think about getting rid of it sometimes but using it as a babysitter is just too damn tempting.

Home phone is $45/month? That's nuts. I would get a cheap pay as you go phone and just leave it plugged in all the time.

I had cable, but found after work I would watch it for half hour, and 3 hours later it was too late to do anything. I didn't get cable when we moved into our house because I knew it would be a time sink. Haven't even got Netflix, but seriously considering it.

A friend of mine on here(Damon) is doing something similar to this and likes it so far, only thing different is he uses Netflix for shows I believe.

i have to keep cable. hard to watch live hockey online. i could ditch it and get the online center ice subscription, but we're close enough to the flyers market that a lot of the games get blacked out even if its not on any other channel we get.

We suspend our DirecTV service every year from Feb-ish to August. No football, no need for TV

Netflix has a ton of kids stuff. The Wiggles, Thomas the Tank Engine, Spongebob ect. My instant que is almost exclusively kids shows.

Also if you have fios in your area, get it. I'm paying around $60 a month for 5Mbps up and a home phone.

THere are lots of VOIP services that you can get for less than 42.99 a month. I just switched to ooma for a 1 time fee($150ish) and hopefully won't have to pay for phone service ever again. I had vonage for years but they kept raising their prices so I dropped them.

Havent had cable for about 6 years. Dont miss it. If we want to watch something either Hulu or Torrents. Computer is hooked to the TV.

$50 a month at its cheapest was retarded for cable and it always goes up..

Dropped cable TV a while back, $49/mo for Internet only. Still get the networks on the TV somehow.

Netflix streaming +

it's doable. the networks have some good shows anyway. nbc and cbs are HD too! then there's PBS and create channel. we would have probably stayed that way, but we couldn't get crap for signal where i am. also an upstart cable company just got in our area. we're getting 'net and cable for $60/mo
