I bought two nice sit in kayaks following the advice of the people on this forum. Bought all of the stuff that goes with it times two, stuff for me and stuff for my teen.
Welp, the first time out in a beautiful lake he says "is this all there is to it". I could have strangled him! I sold all of the stuff never went out again.

Lol. You should have just sold off his/her stuff and bought beer or whatever for yourself and then said “you’re right, this is much better!”

During the lockdown, I decided to build two kayaks with the kids. One single and one double. The goal was both complete for under $900. Both were completed a while ago, but I had to do a repair to the single when a bolt for the back brace got pulled through the cockpit coaming. That, instead of being a simple fix like it should have been, turned into a complete repainting of the entire boat since I wasn't happy with how the paint came out during the initial build. I used simple poof-can Krylon, and it turned out really well. I was going to add red or black to the white, but couldn't come up with a design that I thought would look good on that boat. Oh, and the cockpit coaming was fixed too.

Wow, this thread is dead. Is everyone afraid of kayaking in winter here or something?
Anyways, thought I'd report about the latest paddle I bought. I have lots of paddles, whitewater racing, whitewater play, steep creeking paddles, and flatwater racing (wing) paddles, nearly all carbon and pretty high end. But I needed a good sea kayaking paddle. I've been borrowing paddles from my dad, who is more into sea kayaking than I am. Now that I have 4 in my family, I decided that I need a few of my own. My son and I are comfortable with a wing paddle 90% of the time, but the wife and daughter, or when I'm surfing a sea kayak, I need a good sea kayak paddle. Now that I'm spoiled with high-end carbon paddles, I was unamused at the idea of a heavy fiberglass paddle, but at the same time, I don't want to spend $450+ for a good carbon sea kayak paddle. I found some carbon paddles on Ali Express a while ago (was looking for another wing at the time) and was hesitant to get an unknown brand. That time I ended up getting a custom Jantex from Slovakia, but about a month ago, I ended up back on their website. They had an all carbon blem sea kayak paddle for under $200 shipped. It arrived within two weeks, and it is a darn nice paddle. I like bigger blades, but this is pretty nice size and shape. They have a few different blade sizes and shapes for different styles, too. Anyways, I've been wondering about these paddles for a few years, so I thought I'd give my review if anyone else was on the fence. Here is the store link: https://qqsportoars.aliexpress.com/s...Head_8023406.0. There are other stores/brands on there too, but this is the one that I've heard the most about, and is the one I tried. The prices go up and down a little depending on sales and exchange rates. I've also been told that many of the $450 paddles are made at the same factories that these $200 paddles are made in. Just a heads up if you want to save some money on some nice paddles, if you aren't worried about a paddle being sold by a US company. |

I did an "Intro to Kayaking" 2 hour tour yesterday and had a blast. The instructor did talk a little about the various types of kayaks, but it was all new info to me so I lost it, hah.
We just paddled around the marina with some wind, 15-20mph at times. Having been living right by the river for years, but rarely using it, it was wonderful being out/in the water. I practically grew up on an open bow 19' Marlin in/outboard on this same delta, and miss it. A lot, apparently. So, I started at the beginning of the thread, but it's a bit old now and I imagine the tech has advanced a bit, and the brands have changed. Apologies if ya'll just went over this in the last few pages, and if so, just say so and I'll be on my way to find the posts. 1) What kind of water do you want to paddle on? (ocean, lakes, rivers) River and surrounding delta. I'd launch primarily from here but there's places to put in all over. 2) What is your budget Dunno, really. I know there are $300 Walmart kayaks, but I could also spend 10x that. I'm more about getting good value with a good brand. Considering I'll also need either a new roof rack, or trailer, or something, I'm into associated hardware for 500-1000 already. I wouldn't be opposed to spending 1k on the boat, though. 3) Do you want to be able to increase your skills in kayaking, or just dink around? Both, I suppose, but not for fishing or another platform, just day trip paddling for entertainment and exercise. 4) Do you want to do more floating, or do you want to be actually going places? Ain't this like #3? I think I know what floating means though, like fishing - so that's a no, I want to move. 5) What are you going to be doing from the kayak (fishing, cruising, surfing, etc) Moving. Specifically though, I guess it would be up and down the river and around the delta to appreciate the wildlife and get out into the open. Being able to actually cross the river would be a plus, as well as being able to get onto the water in colder weather. I plan to go back to the same kayak tour place and try out a few different types/models, I just gotta actually keep track of what the heck I used. For sure it was a sit on top, can't really say how long, but was basically like the red one here (not me): Plenty of storage behind me, and wide enough for my fat ass to fit really easily. The tour place charges $65/half day (4hr) to rent, which seems like a fine way to try some various models out. Thanks much! Totally loved it, and forgot sunscreen on my legs, which I'm paying for right now. |

We have bought 5 kayaks in the past year.
We live on the water (creek just off the ICW) and at first we bought longer (14') sit in sea kayaks. The only problem is that I rolled and went in the drink a couple times and I could not get back inside the sit in style kayak without getting to shore (which is a problem with oyster beds everywhere). So we bought three additional kayaks from Walmart. 2 10' sit on top fishing type kayaks (for me) and one smaller sit inside (10') for Mrs Blues. My thought is that I can at least clamor back onto a sit on top kayak if I fall out. What I discovered is that the fishing kayak feels more stable, and I have not fallen in once (knock on wood). Another benefit of the sit on top is that they are self bailing. No more bailing or sponging out a wet hull! The wife loves the shorter, more stable 10' sit inside as well. I have not tried it yet. It has basically the same hull, with the top deck being different between the sit in and sit on. The sit on also has the self bailing ports. The 10' kayaks that we bought are Pelican brand. 100x Intrepid (sit in) and 100x Angler (sit on fishing). I think they were $200 each, and included a paddle. |

I bought a Kayak...not an uber fancy one, instead an inflatable from Advanced Elements.
Took it out this weekend for the first time - San Pablo Reservoir. I was easy to set up, worked great in the water, and I had a wonderful time. It is a bit heavy to lug around 1 person though (I bought the 2 person version in case of ever having a friend or wanting to do some solo trips with a good amount of gear). And although setup was easy breaking it down was a bit more of a PITA (getting it totally dry for folded storage). I was just talking with a co-worker about it. They asked what I did on the lake and I said "I just explored it"...and then busted up laughing. Like I do a bunch of walking, hiking, and backpacking. In all of those situations I'm going from Point A to Point B along an existing pathway...from sidewalks to dirt trails. But in this case...I got that sucker in the water and thought "I'm going over there" and went over there. Then thought "well let's go over there" and went over there. So looking at it from a hiking perspective it was as if I was in the middle of a big 'ol grassy field and just sorta wandered around it...like went to the edge to see that part, turned around and went back in the middle, walked around in circles. Headed to another edge. Walked backward. Etc. Oh, and I forgot to put sunblock on my feet. My my ankles are sunburnt |

Anyone have an opinion on the Aquaglide Noyo 90? I found one for a decent price and was thinking of getting it as a spare. It is also 1.5ft shorter than the AE one I have, and that thing felt large.

Several reviews mention how small and tight it is, even for someone with a medium build. It also has a lot of rocker, which means it'll pivot more left and right than the one you currently have.

I was kinda hoping, due to the length) I could transport it inflated in the back of my car...to save time n what not. Having a spare ...for a lady might be useful

Is this the paddleboard thread too?
Thinking about diving in, so to speak, soon with some affordable Amazon board to take out to Lake Mead...are they OK in general? |

I gave away two sea kayaks a couple weeks ago. We moved into a home with dock and access to the ICW during covid, and no kayaks were available for sale new, so we bought a couple (well) used sea kayaks. Since covid has settled, we have bought three new kayaks and a new power boat. Put them on the curb with FREE sign and they were gone in a couple hours. Neighbor boys took them along with a stand up kayak that my next door neighbor fished out of the drink after a storm. Win-win.

Took out the Aquaglide Noyo 90 today for the 1st time...not a bad little vessel. The seating area could be bigger though

Or if there is an outfitter nearby, they periodically sell their old stuff when they buy new.
