Default What's inside your fish tank?

after waiting for almost 4 years for various reasons, i finally got a new fish tank. bought this 20-gal tank off craigslist for $10, and the stand was donated by disaster999. disaster will also be my on-site advisor.

so i gotta wait for how long? ugh.

gravel only

gravel and water

i'm going to see if i can throw some plants in there, and get the filter and air system squared away before the weekend.

I haven't had fish in a long time. I've always wanted a HUGE freshware aquarium though

THAT's the biggest issue i'm facing right now. of course, i want something pretty, but also prefer it to be more low-maintenance. all i know right now is that i DON'T want goldfish.

Nice, you've been talking about that forever it seems. I'd like a little one for my room here, but doubt I could keep a fish alive for long.

We had a fish tank once.
weirdest thing happened--
So we bought two gold fish, not the typical "orange stupid fish". We also bought an assortment of other, and made sure they would get along.
For the longest time (about two years) we bought different fish because they all kept dying, besides the two goldies and a sucker.
The goldies lasted like 4 years when we moved and died on the move.

i love how the cichlids are so colourful, but the 2 i had a few years ago fought and terrorized the other fish in the tank, so i'm kinda hesitant.

oh. one of my biggest thrills was having these little shrimp that were translucent.

Filter ASAP. Have you added any chemicals to the water yet? It's good to have the new water filtrated and treated one or two days in advance before throwing fishies in.

Do you have a heater?

Hater!

Gil,
Best practice is find the equipment you want online, print out the quote, and take it to PetSmart for a price match. A great heater for cheap are the visi-therm stealths...I got one and it keeps it within a degree of the set temp. Price-matched it was $20.

As these guys said, let the water sit for 24 hours, with a tap conditioner, and then start filtration. Add some Stress-Zyme to get the beneficial bacteria moving. Start out with just a fish or two...don't fully load the tank for a week or three.

Yay for freshwater! http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1457173

yeah. it's going to be freshwater. saltwater is just too much work and too expensive right now.

i'll be buying the chemicals, test kit and hopefully some plants at a local shop today. and disaster is going to lend me one of the filters he has sitting around for the moment.

i'm not in a rush to put fish in. i've actually told my wife to not expect anything for 2 to 3 weeks.

do i need a heater if i don't have fish but have plants? or can i hold off until when i'm ready for fish?

I'm thinking about getting a small freshwater tank too. Update us on what kind of fish you choose.

Live plants? I would say heater. Heck, I would say heater anyhoo to help the formation of healthy bacteria (most things move/breed better in warmer water). Otherwise the water will likely sit around 66 degrees...a bit cool imo.

But I am not an expert nor adviser

its cause the goldfish release more ammonia than other fish. the goldfish can take it but the others cant. goldfish should always be kept separate.

Yeh! Heater is vital in my opinion. I *think* I have mine set at approximately 72ish degrees. I will check when I get home around 12ish.
