With that said I would not personally buy a xc bike in anything other than 29" after riding a few but in a bike park, no thanks.
The problem with bigger wheels and long travel F/S designs is that the wheels need room to move up, which quickly becomes a problem with a 29'er. But...

Pivot just released their Mach 6 (6" of travel), which is a 27.5, and they designed it to be more like a 26'er by giving it shorter chainstays to get away from the long wheelbase problem of some 29'ers. That's in addition to the Firebird (6.6" freeridish bike) already being 27.5 compatible. More companies are going to get into the longer travel game with 27.5's as well.

A friend of mine also changed his Bullet into a 27.5, quite a few bikes can be simply changed over if they have enough room for the rear wheel. Plus the industry is supporting 27.5 much better than 29'ers when you compare the early days.

For trail bikes (and maybe even XC), 27.5 is looking to be the way to go because you get most of the advantages of a 29'er but don't have to deal with most of the drawbacks.

The reality is that there's no real reason for mountain bikes to have 26" wheels specifically, that's just what they ended up with while cobbling the first bikes together and everybody has just run with the idea since then.

I'm in the market for a new bike and clueless as far as what I should be shopping for.

Basically, I used to ride bmx and do a fair amount of dirt jumping/trail riding. Looking to get back into riding, and work my way into the park. At the start, I'll mostly use the bike for some single track and trail riding, and eventually head to the local downhill park. When I say local park, I'm referring to more of a bunny hill by any real standards, as I'm outside of Philly and the closest is Spring Mountain.

Not sure on the budget, but I'd like to keep it to $1,000 or less. Leaning toward a hardtail due to the budget. Although I'm willing to spend more if I can get a bike that would be better suited to all of the different riding I want to do. I understand that at that price point, the choices in new bikes are limited as far as quality which is why I'm open to buying used. Also considering a dedicated dirt jump/park rig next year if I actually get serious about it.

Any recommendations? I have never bought what I would call a real mountain bike, and my last bmx bike was purchased about 14 years ago. Totally out of the loop as far as brands and components and everything, so I'll take any advice you guys can give.

Thanks for any help

Im curious to try out a 27.5 FS bike. I think it may be my next bike. I purchased my first FS bike last summer. Its a Fuji Outland 29er and the shop had me under the impression it was a "do everything" bike and gave me a bunch off because it was the last 2012 they had.

Thinking it was a "do everything" bike I took it to Silver Mountain to ride some downhill trails and was quickly disappointed. Since then Ive had issues with it because its not designed to take the abuse I give it. I talked to another shop that explained why XC 29ers are not meant to jump well due to the cranks being too low in relation to the axles. It made sense but I'm not positive its true.

Regardless, I picked up a 26" FS bike thats better suited to my needs! Its a 2010 26" Specialized Big Hit 1 FSR! I took it out to Silver this past weekend and rode the same downhill trails and it was FAR FAR FAR superior at these kind of trails. After one quick scout run I was clearing table tops and gaps that I would have been afraid to attempt on the 29er. It inspired a lot of confidence and I feel like I got a lot better in just one day!

Ive even done some XC riding with it (not anywhere near as easy as on the 29er obviously) but I got it done! So its possible to ride a DH/FR FS bike as an XC bike too, just plan on spending more time climbing and you may have to hop off and charge a few steep hills :P Nothing too bad!

Heres the bike

just a little jump in the backyard :P

I am kind of a hipster in that regard lol. I like to support the lesser known companies (have had a turner/ rocky mountain/ transitions) more than the bicycle corporation. plus like to have more unique setup u won't see as many with. Really want to go ultra local and get a cannefield jedi next. but $$$$ :-(

I love my Airborne Goblin. They make some really nicely equipped bikes for the money. You just have to spend some time getting good measurements for proper fit since they don't sell through your local shop.

Certainly something to be said for buying from your local shop too. Also used if you aren't in a really big hurry.

I'm actually interested in a Seeker or Goblin...

However the Trek Superfly, Giant XTC are also nice.

Yea, I'm leaning towards more of a DH bike. I know I don't want something that is geared more towards XC. I could care less how fast I am uphill or on flat ground. Just want something that will stand up to some abuse.

I'm not against buying used at all. I'm in no rush, looking at closeouts and searching for used bikes. I did find a brand new GT La Bomba at about 50% off. Pretty intrigued by this bike. I know its a long shot, but has anyone ridden one, or have any thoughts?

So didn't ask earlier but anyone going to the red bull rampage? Lots of really good gravity trails in that area. Thinking about doing Grafton Mesa and Flying Monkey tomorrow.

Unfortunately MD/VA/DC is being "flooded", so they are pushing the MoCo Epic back a week. Which, fortunately, means I can now ride it! Super excited. Long term plans were to ride them in order of ascending distance (25, 35, 50, 65 miles), and I was bummed that I wouldn't start until next year. Not anymore! Hopefully things dry out for next weekend.

I'm going up to Gooseberry on Saturday, possibly something else in the area on Sunday. I'd be up there on Friday if it weren't for a dentist appointment.

Specialized is pretty hard to beat for the price point, especially since the FSR design has the traits that many other designs want to have, but can't...so they just try to make their bike look like an FSR and claim "it's just as good."

Very nice.

That reminds me, I rode for the first time with my light, it is friggin awesome. I only did some really wide trails but I think I can fairly easily do some singletrack with all the light I've got available.

My experiences with night riding; ride trails you know well, and you're fine. The only other kicker is, leaves can obscure the trail, and of course are falling right around the time change.

I agree, it's easy to run off the trail, even on trails you know well and with decent lights. Like duster said the leaves don't help.

Let us (me) know how it goes, as that style of light is on my short list for purchase in the next few weeks. I'm figuring on one for the helmet, and up to two on the bars.

I used it last season with the bar mount that it came with, and it was hard to keep it aimed properly. My mount is one that used a screw/ clamp, most on Amazon use large o rings to hold it to the bar, and I'd imagine were better. This is my solution to the eBay version mount mine came with.

To get the headlamp band to stay on my helmet, it took the help of a zip tie, but it worked on the road the other day. The cord dangling back to my Camelbak is on the annoying side of things though, so I'll probably just stick with one on the bar.

Question about these lights. Is there any way to power them other than batteries? I'm thinking about using them as fog lights on my car just to try them out but would like to power them by 5-12v depending on the voltage.

On another note, last weekend when I was in California I got to ride Big Bear. We only did an hour since we were short on time but it was awesome. I rode a brand new Specialized rock hopper comp and will definitely be purchasing one in the spring. Start saving now and sell my bike in the spring to pay for Some of it. Any idea what a 2006 Specialized Hardrock Sport would sell for? New tires, tubes, brakes, chain and a few other goodies. I paid $175 for it, thinking I could get maybe $250 out of it?
