There were too many trees, thorn bushes and friggin low hanging vines to go faster than walking speed

That was fun though and the river was amazing.

You mastered "riding at the speed of stopped" and "falling down in river with iPhone in pocket." Here are your merit badges.

I was smart enough to put it into my top shirt pocket before we started the ride. I'd be so pissed right now if I hadn't.

Good catch. I was going to point that out, but I didn't want a 'tire nazi' comment to overshadow other points I made in the post.

my thoughts as well, especially since there was likely to have been at least SOME alcohol consumption involved. just 'cause it can't tip over, doesn't mean it isn't dangerous..

There was lots of alcohol consumption. However the sticker on the quad that warns against it only has martinis and canned beer (or hypodermics and pills). We were drinking bottles of beer so I think we were fine.

Anywhere a quad can go I can go on a dirtbike. Only caveat is a ATV with a snorkel.

I used to think the same thing, until I got a quad.
When is the last time your dirt bike climbed a hill of boulders and loose rocks? Try going down a creek that is nothing but football size rocks on your dirt bike...not.

Yeah they are fun. Here are pics of mine that I had.

Blaster bored to a 250cc with Nitrous!

Those were fun fun days.

My Banshee. aaah! That thing was insanely fast. Ported, compression domes, bored 1 over by Farm And Sand Toys. Lone Star Axle, A-Arms, Steering stem. I miss that thing.

Oh, they could tip over. No doubt.

Helmets would have been the proper move.

And yes, there was beer involved.

Kids, don't do what Donnie Don't does. We were doing it the unsafe way.

That said... I was sober enough and rode slow enough to feel comfortable with the danger level.

Looking again, I think we violated all of those rules at the same time.

Whatever you say, try riding in the Northeast sometime. I have climbed crap that I never thought 2 wheels could make it up. I have ridden extensively with a Wolverine 350 with aftermarket wheels and tires and never once couldn't follow him somewhere. Momentum > *

Yeah, it's easier and lazier on a quad, more fun and safer on a dirtbike.

Oh geeze you got me there.
I guess since you are so familiar with where I ride I will just stop posting and let you speak for me. Oh BTW I grew up riding enduro in upstate NY there...but of course you know so much more so I will just leave my first hand real world experience out of this and we will revel in generalizations and stereotypes FTW.

SideShowBob, I grew up riding dirtbikes, and have owned 7 motorcycles over the years. There's no way I could go the places I've gone on ATVs on my dirtbikes. True, a guy like McGrath could do it, but ounce-for-ounce, a rider can go more places on an ATV than on a dirtbike. I've gone up 45+ degree inclines of solid rock with water running down it on a quad. I'd never attempt that on a bike. The slope was so steep that you'd have to lean way forward over the front tire, and you'd then have no traction on the rear wheel and wouldn't make it without a 30mph running start...

I stand by my point, but I agree it's much easier on an ATV in some cases.

Thank you DY. This is exactly what I was getting at. When I first moved out to my new place I was all about getting another dirt bike and thought quads were silly and dangerous. I was basing all this on my previous lifetime of enduro experience and experiences riding the old school 3 wheel death traps.
Now with actual experience owning one I have a different outlook. I also have a friend who was dead set on getting a dirt bike also change his mind after riding down in the creek with me. Not only can you tackle extreme terrain that you would have to walk a bike over (if you can even do that) but you can do it with a rifle and a whole mess of equipment. It's not even a contest.

I disagree, but whatever. I can't show you what I have ridden through and over, so it's a moot point. We can agree to disagree, just wear more gear plze.

I saw a guy riding a unicycle the other day. I bet it can go lots of places. Doesn't mean it's the right vehicle for most riders.

The quads were easy to get moving and easy to control. No way I would have even pondered going on the creek on a bike, the rocks would have resulted in insta-crash. I'm sure Bob is such an awesome rider he would just glide across the surface of the water, but I can't imagine it would be easy.
