Seikos are nice... The above watch is at my local BJ's Wholesale club for $200. I Personally have a Seiko Kinetic AutoRelay and a Citizen EcoDrive. The Ecodrive was $146 at Kay's on sale. Nothing crazy, just something that I don't mind getting beat up or stolen or lost when I travel or just go to hang out at a buddy's house. My Seiko was about $500 at the time, 7 years ago. My Breitling on the other hand... Like others have mentioned, Swiss Army watches are IMHO a phenomenal value. Real good feel to them, timeless style, very durable and won't totally break the bank. |

Integrated bracelets are the devil. I like watches with normal lugs so you can change up the strap.

That watch is really light and very thin. I really like mine. It is also titanium.

I picked up this Kenneth Cole watch for about $40. I just thought it looked OK and I needed a watch but over the past 2 years I've gotten a lot of compliments on it.

Automatics for less than $200 will be hard to come by. I agree fully with Strider's Seiko recommendation. However - I would also like to offer up the Vostok Amphibia.
http://www.smirs.com/product_info.php?products_id=538 It is a relatively thick divers watch -- but on a NATO strap it is light and not too bulky at all. NATO Strap -- FYI (it takes an 18mm - you can get a variety of colors and materials): http://www.gnomonwatches.com/NATOStrap.htm Mine has been bulletproof for 2 years -- it has seen pool and ocean and daily wear and hasn't missed a beat. Plus -- I guarantee it is different -- you won't see too many of these around. Finally, at less than $100 for the watch and a custom strap -- you cannot beat the price. |

"Swiss Army" watches are made by Victorinox, "Swiss Military" are made by Wenger. Victorinox bought Wenger a few years ago, but they still keep both lines available. Most people who know about watches in that price range will probably say that traditionally the "Swiss Military" watches were slightly better than the "Swiss Army" watches, but it's like saying an Oldsmobile is slightly better than a Buick. In the end they are probably the same.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I would still like to see what other people have to suggest.
StriderTB, I'm really liking the Seiko 5. My question is, where can I find the biggest range of them, which website or a store? Btw, what's a NATO strap? I was reading the explanation in the watch thread, but I didn't understand it. |

Wenger makes some nice watches for not much money. I snagged this one last year for $130.

This site has lots of good pictures of Seikos and Citizens. If you find one you like, get the model number and find it on the bay. http://www.network54.com/Forum/78440/ This is a Seiko and Citizen dedicated forum. A lot of watch guys are also into photography and will post up pretty good pictures. http://www.ittc.ku.edu/~jgauch/watch/ This guy is a good photographer and has 4 metric assloads of pictures on his site. http://www.seiko5ers.com/ This site is mostly in Engrish but he has good pictures of the Seiko 5 line. This line is an excellent entry point into the world of mechanical watches. http://www.higuchi-inc.com/index-e.html Higuchi-san is very well known in the watch community and an excellent source for Asian market Seikos. Few Americans realize it but Seiko makes Asian market watches that are competitive with the big boys like Rolex. http://www.thepurists.com/ And for fun here is a forum that caters to the elite. Much snobbery here. |

OK, if you don't care what watch you wear, you spend $30 on a Timex, and feel secure in the fact that you've spent very wisely. Timex watches work, they are what they are, and don't pretend to be anything else. Is that what you're talking about?
